manassas: The Three “R’s” Part Deux-Earth Sheltered Home in Manassas VA - 04/21/09 07:14 PM
In a pursuit of celebrating Earth Day I'm following the three "R's " on my posts this week;  recycle, reuse and reduce.  My first post focused on the creative reuse and conversion of the Lorton Reformatory to the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center.Today it is my chance to revisit an unusual home I had the opportunity to market and sell in Prince William County.  Tucked into a hillside and not visible from the street was an interesting and rare, by Northern Virginia standards, Earth Sheltered home. With its weathered wood, glass front and clean, simple lines that meld with the large sculpted patio, … (2 comments)

manassas: Prince William County-Another Small Piece of Local History - 01/18/08 01:32 PM
Sometimes you can drive past a landmark for years and not really notice it.  Then one day you happen to glance at it again and wonder a bit more about the story behind the little white building by the side of the road.  In this case it is another one of the small white frame churches you find that hasn’t been demolished to make way for “progress.”
The Sacred Heart Parish first began in 1914 as a congregation made up primarily of Czech and Austrian families living in Manassas.  In 1929 part of the congregation left and built the Annunciation of … (14 comments)

manassas: Extra Extra Read all about it! - 08/06/07 10:20 AM

I know it isn't the Wall Street Journal or the London Financial Times but I was very happy to see an article about my Earth-Sheltered Home listing appear on the front page of the Potomac News today.  Interestingly enough the Washington Post has been telling me for 3 weeks that they were going to run an article about the house.  The reporter kept saying I'm working on it.
When the reporter from the Potomac News called I asked her how she had learned about the property.  She stated that she had been doing a google search on local real estate and came … (10 comments)

manassas: Who Lives Underground? Not Just Moles! - 07/22/07 07:08 PM
That was what the newspaper headline of the Journal Messenger said in 1983 when they were writing about my current earth sheltered home listing in Manassas.  The current owner of the property is only the second owner of the home and she is fortunate enough to have the original photos of the home being built (which I had burned to a CD) and the newspaper articles that were published when the home was first built.
It is amazing to read how the original builder, a man named George Allison, thought that with all of the energy saving features the home provided that … (4 comments)

Yahoo recently put out a little blurp on the on Top 10 DIY mistakes that homeowners make.  Since I am often asked by my sellers what can they do to get their home ready to sell I thought sharing this list might also let you know what not to do!
Not taking out the required permits Starting a job without the necessary tools and supplies Inadequate prepartion of the job site Skimping on materials Using the wrong paing Improper preparation of walls for painting Unsafe job conditions Inaccuracy Working Beyond your limits Failure to get a clue I especially like #10.  I … (5 comments)

manassas: Going Green doesn’t require you to become a Frog! - 06/24/07 05:18 PM

Sorry Kermit but actually it is easy to start the process towards green living.  A few inexpensive steps by everyone can lead to some big changes overall.  As more and more consumers become aware of the threats to the environment with rising energy prices and decreasing renewable resources they are looking at their homes as an easy place to start making small changes that can help lead to a bigger impact.
Installing low-flow shower heads Replacing old toilets with water saving models Using composite lumber products to build decks, fences and roofs Buying natural installation made from recycled blue jeans … (6 comments)

manassas: Slow and steady goes the market Prince William County VA - 06/22/07 07:54 AM
The market continues its slow and steady pace in Prince William County.  Home sales have been fairly consistent in 2007.  Of course we are well off the last 2 years but despite the continued news that we have crashed and burned it just isn't true.  Sellers with realistic expectations are getting their homes SOLD and buyers need to realize that it is ALWAYS A GREAT TIME TO OWN A HOME!
If you are looking to buy or sell your home in Prince William County give me a call.
