military relocation: Lend A Helping Hand This Holiday Season - 12/02/13 05:19 AM
Holidays are one of the hardest times for military families separated by deployment.   It is also one of the best times for friends and neighbors to lend a helping hand. It isn't about money it's about a few minutes or a few hours to help with the little things that need to be done.
Simple things such as helping put up their outside holiday lights or getting the Christmas tree in that pesky stand. How about volunteering to stand in line at the post office or UPS store for them. Does mom or dad need a few hours to get … (8 comments)

military relocation: Dealing With Sticker Shock When You Head To Fort Belvoir Virginia - 11/20/13 08:42 AM
Most people hear the term "sticker shock" and they think of cars.  For military families relocating to Fort Belvoir from other bases around the country the term can also explain their first reaction to housing prices in Northern Virginia.  The current real estate market has helped lessen that shock but it is still something to consider as you decide whether you should buy a home in the area.
One of the many benefits that the military offers is the VA loan a perfect way to buy a home near Fort Belvoir with no money down.  The first thing I recommend to anyone … (5 comments)

military relocation: Honoring All Of Those Who Serve Our Country-Veterans Day 2013 - 11/10/13 09:10 PM

Today is just one of the 365 days of the year that we should honor and thank our current and past servicemembers for their courage to serve our country.  Not only do they stand in harms way for our freedom but they but they leave families behind who wait for their safe return.
Thank you for your service to our country. … (6 comments)

military relocation: VA? No way. Listing agents and sellers should be ashamed - 08/25/13 10:49 AM
It is hard to believe in the Northern Virginia area that any agent or seller would reject a VA loan on the premise that a VA appraisal is to tough or their will be a call for petty repairs.  In the last 10 years I've had two requests from VA for repairs on a property.  Both were for peeling paint in homes built in the 1940's.  The cost of repairs was less than $500 TOTAL for 2 homes.
Let's get real folks and treat an offer as an offer no matter what type of financing the buyer is using.

military relocation: Tell a Veteran to Miss a Payment to Qualify for a Short Sale and You May be Up Against the CFPB - 05/06/13 10:03 AM
Very important information.  I had a lender tell an active duty military to miss two payments before they would consider their short sale.  It was the "investors" policy.  Needless to say we pushed back hard and having this information is very helpful to pass along to a negotiator.
Statistically, over half of the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB) complaints to the Office of Servicemember Affairs (OSA) have to do with mortgages.  Of these, 58 percent of them had to do with loan modification, mortgage collection practices or foreclosure . . . and yes . . . short sales would fall under … (3 comments)

military relocation: America The Beautiful Passes-Free Access To National Parks For The US Military - 05/24/12 09:29 PM
Yesterday I stopped by the Woodbridge office of the National Park Service to pick up my “America The Beautiful” season pass.  Turns out I was the first person to stop by the local office to get one and hopefully the word will get out about this great opportunity.  In support of our troops the National Park Service is offering a special free pass to use at any park maintained by the NPS for active duty military and their dependents for the next year.
In the Woodbridge area the passes are available at the NPS Regional office in Brook Center off of … (8 comments)

military relocation: Tuesday Stroll In Northern Virginia-The Cannons Still Keep Watch At Fort Ward Park - 09/27/11 11:28 AM
You might think as you start to stroll the treed grounds at Fort Ward Park in Alexandria that this is just another nice place to stretch your legs or have a picnic.  However as you start to explore you discover the parks history.  Fort Ward was a Union fort used during the civil war to help protect the DC area.
Strolling the grounds you come across the raised ground where the cannons took aim on Confederate troops.  You will also see the entrance to the bunkers which helped shelter the 500 troops stationed at the Fort from 1861-1865.  The preserved fort … (12 comments)

military relocation: Paydays for Military Retirees Are Changing - 09/08/11 01:35 AM
Great information for all military retirees who will be wondering what is going on with their pay at the end of September and the end of the year.  Though early checks are nice there can be complications to consider.  Thanks to Louise for pointing out this information.

According to information provided at www.Military.com, paydays for military retirees and those who receive portions of retired pay are changing for September and December,as the Defense Finance and Accounting Service (DFAS) changes its pay schedule to comply with the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act. This year payments normally scheduled for Oct. 3, 2011 … (1 comments)

military relocation: Woodbridge Military Family Makes A Move After A Successful VA Compromise Sale - 08/26/11 02:38 PM
First a deployment and then PCS orders meant my sellers needed to make a move.  Unfortunately they had missed the deadline to qualify for the Department of Defense Homeowners Assistance Program (HAP) so it looked as if a short sale was in their future.  As we started talking about the process I learned they had a VA loan on their home which meant there was another alternative.
Though a VA Compromise sale is similiar to a short sale, the lender can file a claim with VA for the difference between the proceeds and the payoff amount. This makes it easier for … (0 comments)

military relocation: Money Magazine Puts Montclair In Prince William County In The Top 100 Places To Live - 08/16/11 03:19 AM
Money Magazine recently named Montclair #35 on it's Top Ten List of Best Places to live in the US. There are plenty of reasons why Montclair would make the list. You can start with the 107 acre lake residents have access to. Montclair is one of a handful of neighborhoods in Northern Virginia that offers a private lake and beaches for residents to enjoy. With over 5200 homes Monclair is one of the larger planned communities in the area but with the mature trees and large lots you don't feel as if you are in a typical planned community. military relocation: A Sign of The Times-A Change At The "Wives" Club At Fort Belvoir - 06/14/11 08:29 AM
For years military installations across the US have offered the fellowship for the "wives" of active duty and retired military though the "wives" club.  However today's military spouses aren't always "wives".  At Fort Belvoir there has been a name change to reflect the new status of the dependents of those eligible to participate in the Officers Wives Club.  The new club name is the Officer Spouses Club.  Though the club membership has been available to men for many years the name did not reflect the open door policy.  Now it is official and the board members hope the name change will … (6 comments)

Most people moving to the Lorton area of Fairfax County don't realize the history surrounding the area. Starting with our nations founding fathers, George Washington and George Mason, Lorton has always held an important place in our local history. military relocation: Memorial Day 2011-Spending the Day in A Different Way - 05/30/11 07:40 AM
Most of you read my blog know that Memorial Day and other holidays honoring our veterans and active duty military personnel are important to me.  Most years on Memorial Day I have made an early morning visit to Arlington Cemetery to pay my respect to all of those who have served including my husband.  This year I'm spending the holiday with friends at the Outer Banks in North Carolina. However even though I"ve changed my location this year it doesn't mean that my thoughts aren't with the families of those who have lost loved ones.  As I look out over the Atlantic … (9 comments)
