Many visitors heading to George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate don't realize there is more to see than just his famous home. In fact the estate has a 4 acre Pioneer Farm with animals that would have been part of the grounds during the 1700's. It has been a busy spring on the estate and there are lots of new lambs in the barn and fields. You can't help but get a smile as they call for their moms and even though they are all mixed together you can see they sort themselves out fairly quickly.Now is a great time to go (16 comments)

The estate offers a lot of history and plenty to see. For a special holiday treat be sure to get your tickets for the candlelight tours of George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. Located on the banks of the Potomac River the estate is decked out for the holidays. Mrs. Washington herself leads tours which show the home as it was during the holidays of George Washington's time. There is dancing, music and friends from of George and Martha Washington on hand.After you tour the home you can spend time at the Museum and Education Center where there are more decorations and music. This weekend is the official start of summer for George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. Starting on Friday May 27th through Sunday May 29th visitors can take a tour of Mount Vernon at the Sunset Celebration. From 6 PM to 9 PM you can stroll the estate and tour the Mansion in a more relaxed atmosphere. There will be music, dancing and wagon rides. There will be wine and dessert available for you to buy and enjoy watching the sunset on the lawn overlooking the Potomac River. Amdission is $18.00 for adults, $12.00 for children between 6 to 11 and free for (4 comments)

Around the country most people are celebrating today as President's Day. Created in 1971 to honor all of the United States presidents many think the day was only to combine Abraham Lincoln's Birthday and George Washington's Birthday. However by law it is for all of our past presidents. In Virginia though the day is officially George Washington Day. Let's face it when it comes to Virginia history, George Washington was our leading citizen. With his home Mount Vernon a living monument to his presence in our area.
