rippon lodge: Tuesday Stroll-Rippon Lodge in Prince William County Virginia - 10/25/11 02:41 PM
Rippon Lodge in Woodbridge VA was built around 1747 and still stands today as the oldest still standing home in Prince William County VA.  Though it is not as grand as other local historical homes, Rippon Lodge has a beautiful vantage point across Neabsco Creek and played a significant role in Virginia history.   Richard Blackburn the original owner of the home was an architect.  He designed the orginal Mount Vernon Estate owned by George Washington.  With it's prominent location on the "Kings Highway" (now Route 1), Rippon Lodge was often a stopping point for George Washington and George Mason among other well known early … (10 comments)

rippon lodge: Rippon Lodge-One Of The Least Recognized Historic Spots in Northern Virginia - 06/24/11 08:20 AM
Rippon Lodge is probably one of the least known yet the oldest colonial houses still standing in Northern Virginia.

Built in 1747 Rippon Lodge is small and simple compared to George Washington's home Mount Vernon only a few miles away, yet the connection between the two properties runs deep. Richard Blackburn the original owner of Rippon Lodge was the architect that designed the original home at Mount Vernon. To add to the connection between the families, one of Lt. Col. Thomas Blackburn's daughters married Bushrod Washington (nephew of George Washington) and a granddaughter married John Augustine Washington, George's brother. … (16 comments)

This lovely little building is aptly named "The Cabin."  It sits on the property of Rippon Lodge the oldest home in Prince William County.  The property was originally part of an huge tobacco plantation that is thought to have encompassed 21,000 acres.  Today the property is owned by Prince William County and is open to the public.  It is just one of many terrific historical sites in the Northern Virginia area that have been preserved for everyone to enjoy.

rippon lodge: Potomac Heritage Scenic Trail-Taking Steps Along the Occoquan River - 12/07/09 12:14 PM
Add up the miles and the Potomac Heritage Scenic Trail (PHT) runs 830 miles between the Potomac River and the Alleghany Highlands in the Ohio River Basin.  Compared to the Appalachian Trail which runs 2175 miles from Georgia to Maine the PHST is just a small trail.
In Prince William County (VA)  part of the Potomac Heritage Scenic Trail  runs through the town of Occoquan, Belmont Bay, Leesylvania State Park and ends at Quantico Marine Corps base.  Currently only small portions of the trail are open to the public so anyone who wants to enjoy the trail has to figure out a … (2 comments)
