speechless sunday: The Warmth Of A Spring Day Is Cause To Spread My Wings - 05/05/13 09:48 AM

Any creature who could get out to enjoy the weather in Northern Virginia over the last few days has.  Getting them to hold still long enough to get a photo has been difficult and I understand why.  You want to soak in as much of the sun and fresh air as you can.
A great way to end another productive week and get ready to do it all over again.
Happy Sunday evening to everyone.

speechless sunday: When You Need Inspiration Watch A Bumble Bee At Work - 04/28/13 03:04 AM

There is a reason for the phrase "busy as a bee."  All you have to do is watch a bumble bee moving among the blooms to know how industrious they are.  Our azaleas are in full bloom and the bumble bees are gathering nectar and making sure to spread the pollen from plant to plant.  There was a time when I would have run the other way when I saw one.  Now I realize they won't bother me if I don't get in the way of their job.
Take a few minutes to watch a bumble bee at work today. … (29 comments)

speechless sunday: A Forgotten Gazebo Along The Waterfront - 01/13/13 08:41 AM

Today my clients were looking at a beautiful waterfront property along the Occoquan Reservoir.  The only problem was we couldn't see the water for the fog.  As we wandered the property we came across this old gazabo which had seen better days.  The good news is the rest of the property was top notch and well cared for.
I'm hoping the 2 days of fog we've had will lift tomorrow so we can see the water again soon.

speechless sunday: The Angels Are Looking Down Upon Us - 12/16/12 04:00 AM

Most of the time when we think of Arlington National Cemetery we see the rows of white marble headstones all lined up. However in older sections of the cemetery you will find more elaborate memorials.  This angel sits atop the gravesite for Major General Bussey.  Bussey was a General during the Civil War and then Assistant Secretary of the Interior.
Looking at this memorial yesterday I couldn't help but think of the 20 new little angels from Newtown CT and say a prayer for their families.

speechless sunday: Peaceful Reflections On A Winter Day - 12/09/12 04:49 AM

The sun was setting on the Semper Fidelis Chapel when I snapped this photo catching the reflection of the trees and sky.  The chapel is located just above the National Museum of the Marine Corps outside the gates of Quantico MCB.  The chapel is open for quiet reflection everyday between 9 AM to 5 PM.  Surrounding the chapel are walking paths and additional memorials to our United States Marines.

speechless sunday: Do You Ever Think You Are The Only Person Left On Earth? - 12/02/12 04:08 AM

Foggy days make me think of old horror movies where out of the mist some creature would rise.  They give you the sense that you might be the only person left on earth as the monster has gotten everyone else.  This is the boardwalk along the shoreline in Chesapeake Beach MD.  I didn't realize when I was taking the photo that my camera was on the black and white setting until I uploaded it.  Seemed appropriate considering the fog.Hope your week ahead is clear and bright.

speechless sunday: If You Are Tired Of Your Thanksgiving Leftovers This Guy Will take Them - 11/25/12 01:55 AM
There is no doubt this guy is just plan ugly.  Of course he has a purpose in nature.  Seeing him right after Thanksgiving made me wonder if might be waiting for me to toss out the Turkey carcass for him.  He also wasn't what I was trying to take a photo of but if opportunity knocks take the shot.

speechless sunday: Move Over Lucille Ball The Woodbridge Redheads Are Moving In - 10/14/12 01:27 AM

There's something about the first pop of red in the fall that catches your attention.  While we have a long way to go to match the splendor those living in the Northeast are already seeing, we do have a few early redheads to catch our attention.I'm off before a few appointments this afternoon to a favorite local park to see who else might be putting on a fall show.  Enjoy your Sunday and the week to come.

speechless sunday: Sometimes You Have To Look A Little Closer To Find What You Are Looking For - 08/12/12 07:49 AM

At first looking at this pond all you might think is WOW there's a stagnate pond and nothing could possibly live there.  However just like many things in life if you take a moment to look a little closer you might be surprised.

This pond is teeming with life.  Among the many creatures was this Leopard Frog just waiting for his next meal to fly within reach.
Hope you have a great week and find something that catches your attention. … (17 comments)

speechless sunday: A Bright Spot After A Rainy Northern Virginia Weekend - 07/21/12 10:50 PM

It's been a rainy weekend in Northern Virginia.  No complaining since we clearly needed cooling off and the plants needed a good soaking.  Even with the gray skies it's possible to find some "sunshine" in the daylilies growing in the garden.  Hope you have a wonderful Sunday and a great week ahead

speechless sunday: How To End A Recording Breaking 105 Degree Day - 07/08/12 05:57 AM

Yesterday the temperature reached a record 105 degrees in Northern Virginia.  Having lived 6 years in Arizona the number on the thermometer didn't scare me but the humidity made it almost unbearable.Fortunately the opportunity to escape came in the way of a boat ride and float on the Potomac River at a well known local boaters hangout called Tim's Rivershore.  We dropped anchor then briefly lost the Captain and the First Mate to a swiftly moving current.  Another boater retrieved them and their rafts bringing them safely back to the boat.  Note to self, make sure the raft ropes are … (18 comments)

speechless sunday: The End of a Crazy Weekend in Belmont Bay - 07/01/12 10:39 AM

Just about 48 hours ago we were listening to the warnings of severe thunderstorms rolling in to Northern Virginia, DC and MD.  The "Derecho" storm arrived at 10:30 PM and instantly knocked about power to over 1/2 million people in the area.  Belmont Bay was black for almost 24 hours with power coming back on at 8 PM Saturday night.  Fortunately in our area the damage was minimal.  The Belmont Bay marina and boats suffered no damage. For others they weren't so lucky and some are still without power tonight.  It's a reminder to make sure you have emergency supplies on … (13 comments)

speechless sunday: Busy As A Bee? When There's Honey To Be Made The Bees Work Overtime - 06/24/12 09:59 AM

Watching a bee in search of pollen on blooming plants is fascinating.  They work non-stop to gather what they need and don't seem to mind the interloper with the camera trying to catch them at work.  These bees were at work at Greenspring Gardens in Annandale VA.  Hope you have a productive week and you are as busy as these bees are.

speechless sunday: The Description Was Right-It Said Huge and I Won't Disagree - 06/03/12 03:52 AM

The more specific name for this creature is a Male Swamp Darner.  However knowing the species led me to look further on the internet for more information.  Under one of the definitions was the word "HUGE."  I would have to agree.  We found him in the surf with wet wings.  He couldn't fly but he could crawl onto a finger.  Safely on board he flapped his wings continuously until they dried out.  After a few minutes he was able to take off and we finished our walk on the beach with a sense of satisfaction that we had … (31 comments)

speechless sunday: Speechless Sunday-Reflection After The Rain - 05/27/12 01:02 PM

I was out taking a stroll yesterday after a rain shower and looked down into a puddle along the walk and noticed the reflection of the nearby building.

speechless sunday: Peace and Quiet On A Sunday Morning In Northern Virginia - 04/29/12 03:18 AM

It's nice to remember that despite the busy roads that criss cross Northern Virginia that you can still find scenes like this.  Moments like this make me remember how much I enjoyed spending time on my Grandfather's farm as a child.  Hope you have a wonderful Sunday and a great week ahead.

speechless sunday: Until You Learn To Swim This Puddle Will Have To Do - 04/22/12 03:54 AM

Even though this mama duck has the Occoquan River only a block away she decided this puddle on the street was a good spot for a first swim.  Since it's Earth Day 2012 I hope you get a chance to enjoy the wonders of what Mother Nature has provided whether its watching ducklings in a pond or taking a walk through your local park.

speechless sunday: Caught In The Act-The Bunnies Were Out Early This Morning - 04/07/12 10:16 PM

When I went out for an early morning walk the first stirring creature I came across was a bunny.  Didn't see an Easter Basket anywhere nearby so guess the eggs were already hidden.  Hope the kids find them all, as a hardboiled egg left in the sun for a few hours is not pleasant to come across later.Happy Easter.

speechless sunday: Speechless Sunday-Go Ahead Try and Take My Fish - 03/25/12 02:49 AM

Living bordered by the Occoquan River and the Occoquan National Wildlife Refuge has it's advantages.  In the Spring watching the Osprey build their nests and fish is a amazing treat.   A few days ago one of the local nesting pairs stopped to eat their recent catch just outside my window.  At one point it looked as if the Osprey gave me the eye as if to say....go ahead and try to get my fish!

speechless sunday: Speechless Sunday-Big Wheels Keep On Churning - 03/11/12 05:22 AM

The gears and wheels inside Chapman/Beverly Mill in Prince William County Virginia kept this historical mill working starting in 1724.  The mills was an important part of the growth of the Shenandoah Valley.  Farmers from the valley brought their wheat and corn to be ground at the mill and then it was transported to Alexandria VA where it could be sold and shipped to Europe. The mill was the site of a strategic the Battle of Thoroughfare Gap and the mill was burned in 1862.  It was purchased and restored by the Beverly family in 1876.  Vandals burned the mill in … (20 comments)
