springfield va: Springfield VA-Is the End Near For A Favorite Hardware Store? - 05/14/12 05:02 PM
Growing up in Springfield VA meant many a weekend trip with my mom or dad to Fischers Hardware. The store first opened by the Fischer Family almost 60 years and it was the place to go to find anything you needed for your home. The store moved a few times over the years and when I was renovating my parents home in the late 90's, Fischers was always my first stop. The store was small but the staff knew their stuff and would even lend out some tools for the one off jobs like trying to get the drain out of my

springfield va: Springfield Commuters-Keep Your Eyes on The Fairfax County Parkway Extension - 09/09/10 02:24 PM
Having grown up in and been driving on Springfield VA roads for a long time it is easy for me to drive the local roads almost by remote control. Shoot when I attended Washington Irving Intermediate School, Old Keene Mill Road was two lanes not the divided 4 lane road it is today. And no I didn't walk 5 miles uphill both ways to get to school so let's not go there. Now the long anticipated completion of the Fairfax County Parkway is well underway. The first phase of the project is a re-alignment of Rolling Road and roads leading

springfield va: Springfield VA-Before There Was The Springfield Interchange There Was Springfield Airport - 08/25/10 08:16 PM
Ask the residents of Northern Virginia who drive through the Springfield interchange everyday and they may tell you that an airport would be preferable to the 50 ramps and 20 lanes they deal with everyday. Ask a tourist driving through the Springfield interchange and you can bet they would rather be flying over than trying to navigate their way through the maze. In 1945 this same area was the location of a 3,000 foot long unpaved runway as part of the Springfield Airport. The tiny airport offered fuel and maintenance facilities for small aircraft. One of the mechanics at the airport in the late 1940's

springfield va: Is a Move to the New National Geospatial Intellengce Agency in Springfield VA in Your Plans? - 05/24/10 01:13 PM
With the new National Geospatial-Intellegence Agency (NGA) being built on the old Fort Belvoir Engineering Proving Grounds almost 6500 employees will be working in to the Springfield and Lorton area in the next few years. For employees who will be moving to the new facility finding homes nearby will be important. Traffic in and out of NGA will be tough. Let’s face it anytime you move a significant amount of employees from diverse locations to one place no matter how well the various government agencies plan commuting will be a pain. Fortunately there are a number of terrific communities that provide

springfield va: Springfield VA-Greentree Village Offers More than Just Townhouses - 04/15/10 06:43 AM
Greentree Village is what you might expect to see in a community in Fairfax County, Virginia. Located in West Springfield, the neighborhood seems typical of many in the area. Brick front townhouses backing to trees and grassy islands slow traffic down for the kids to be able to play safely. Across the street from the neighborhood is one of the 380 parks maintained by the Fairfax County Park Authority. A Fairfax County Connector bus stop is at the entrance to the neighborhood, within 15 minutes is the Springfield Metro, the Rolling Valley and Sydenstricker Slug Lines are all close by as

springfield va: Wordless Wednesday-My How Times Have Changed in Real Estate - 03/31/10 07:49 PM
While sorting through some family paperwork I came across this receipt for a credit report and FHA appraisal from my parents first and only home purchase in Springfield VA in 1955. Wouldn't our buyers today be happy with an FHA appraisal fee of $20.00? If you are thinking about buying a home now in Springfield VA or anywhere in Northern Virginia give me a call. Though home prices aren't what they were in 1955 there are still some great deals available and a month left before the tax credit expires.

springfield va: When A Blog Post or Two Will Bring You Good Cheer - 12/14/09 07:18 AM
It all started with a blog post or two about the Springfield VA area where I grew up. Then I threw in a blog post or two about Military Relocation to Fort Belvoir and the Pentagon. When they were stirred together on the internet my phone rang from an owner of a home in the Townes of Orange Hunt with an idea. The owner was not interested in going the usual For Sale by Owner (FSBO) route but they also weren't interested in listing their home in the MLS. Instead they offered me an exclusive right to advertise their home and

springfield va: Enjoy Charlestown One of Springfield (VA) Best Kept Secrets - 11/17/09 05:59 PM
Tucked just off the intersection of two major roads in Springfield is the townhouse community of Charlestown. With tree lined streets, community parks and easy access to shopping and commuter routes this secret neighborhood is well worth checking out. One of the benefits of the Charlestown neighborhood is the outside maintenance that the HOA provides. Besides the lawn care, trash pickup and snow removal the HOA also paints the exterior trim of the townhouses on a three year cycle, replaces the roofs when needed and the brick walls that run around the perimeter of the backyards. Commuting to the Pentagon

The 7 year project to upgrade the Springfield Interchange is barely behind us and now the extension of the Fairfax County Parkway will once again make Springfield commuting a challenge. Starting in a few weeks the Fullerton Road exit off of I-95 (166B) will be closed. If you are a local commuter who likes to sneak off the I-95 at this exit when southbound traffic is stacked up you will now need to remember to get off at the Backlick Rd exit instead. A study done by VDOT during the morning peak, an average of 345 vehicles an hour travel along

springfield va: Springfield (VA)-Check Out the Townhouse Community of Charlestown - 09/27/09 06:21 AM
They say that fine wine ages well. The same thing can be said for the townhouse neighborhood of Charlestown in West Springfield. Maybe it is the all brick construction or the tree lined streets that make it standout from other area neighborhoods. It might even be the residents of the neighborhood who have a strong home owners association which even maintains the exterior of the townhouses. But whatever the combination it has worked well for 40 years.Anytime you read an MLS description for Charlestown you will see somewhere the words "dramatic curved staircase." Having lived and owned a townhouse in the

springfield va: Springfield (VA)-Hidden Pond Nature Center a Wonderful Surprise - 09/26/09 09:41 PM
Perhaps it is a stretch to say that Hidden Pond Nature Center in West Springfield is in plain sight. It wouldn't have been named "hidden pond" if it was. In fact you could drive by the small sign on Keene Mill Road that points to the nature center for years and not realize what was down the road. Tucked at the end of a residential street Hidden Pond Nature Center offers the type of small park that makes it easy for anyone to take a leisurely stroll around the perimeter of the pond and through the woods. At twenty five acres
