things to see in va: The End of 2011-Revisiting Old Posts For Memories Of The Past - 12/30/11 06:26 PM
Over the years, either due to Active Rain hyper-local contests or personal interest I've ended up creating a series of blogs on one subject. Some of my favorites are about the history in our area and in particular a series of posts on historic churches in Northern Virginia. This past week a young man asked if I could help point him in the direction of some local churches to photograph. Interesting enough the request came just after I had been going back through my Active Rain posts to review my keywords and tags. As a result it was easy to point

things to see in va: Barrett House-A Lorton VA Historic Landmark - 12/03/11 01:53 PM
Barrett House today stands empty and surrounded by fencing to keep out intruders. However, since the early twentieth century the home located on Ox Road in Lorton has stood watching the changes to the surrounding area. Originally the property where Barrett House sits was part of a 3,500-acre tract granted by Lord Fairfax in England to Virginia colonist Robert Carter, Jr. in 1729. Over the years the land was divided and subdivided by various owners. Around 1891 Barrett House was constructed on 258 acres and used as a country home for a DC based lumber merchant. things to see in va: You Pass Them Every Day in Northern Virginia But Do You Notice Them? - 09/14/10 07:50 PM
Everyday thousands of motorists in Northern Virginia pass these signs on the side of major highways or smaller side roads and have no idea what they say or why they are there. In fact the Commonwealth of Virginia was one of the first to have a historical marker program in the United States. The first markers went up in 1927 along Route 1 between Mount Vernon and Richmond. All markers are the same size and shape but they do have one distinguishing feature. Each marker has a code which designates their location. For example markers with the letter "E" on them are

The property was originally part of an huge tobacco plantation that is thought to have encompassed 21,000 acres. Today the property is owned by Prince William County and is open to the public. It is just one of many terrific historical sites in the Northern Virginia area that have been preserved for everyone to enjoy.

Here are a few photos to remind us all of the sacrifice made my many for our freedom.
