Next week is Transit Week in Virginia. This event has happened every year since 2005 and it is a challenge for Virginian's to use our wide variety of public transportation options instead of jumping into their car. Many folks will shake their heads and say there is NO WAY you can live in this area without a car. On the heels of the news from CNN that DC commuters face the worst traffic in the nation, Woodbridge VA commuters learn they are about to lose a major commuter lot to progress.Well I guess you can call it progress if you are a fan of Potomac Mills Mall and the upcoming expansion of the mall. SLUGS. When most people here the word they go EWWWW. In Northern Virginia when we hear slugs we immediately think of commuters getting from Point A to Point B for free.The history of slugging in our area goes back to before the current lines formed for free rides. The term originated when bus drivers would discover that instead of a token a rider had dropped in a slug (fake coin) and managed a free bus ride. The Virginia Rail Express (VRE) is introducing express train service starting in July 2010. Luckily riders who use the Woodbridge Station will be able to take advantage of this new service. Originally the express train was going to bypass the Woodbridge station located at the entrance to Belmont Bay but after deliberation and political wrangling the station was included in the plans.
