When I first started my career in real estate, some of the first advice I received was to get out and meet people.  Once I let every one of my friends and family members, and anyone else I have ever come in contact with know my new career status, I should then join local or community organizations or functions.

I thought about this bit of advice for awhile.  I am basically a shy person.  Now, that doesn't mean I can't talk your ears off, BUT that MAY only happen once I've gotten to know you really well.  I'm more the kind of person who likes to watch and listen to people.  I feel I learn so much about people that way.  This bit of advice would take some courage for me to follow through with.

Anyway, recently I was invited to join a group.  Not the civic minded, community helpful groups that were probably what those with the advice were thinking of.  Instead I joined a group of lovely ladies with the main goal of having a good time and FUN!  I can't think of anything better.  You see, I love to laugh, or giggle, as most say I do.  These ladies make me that possible.

Last week I had another birthday.  So in this group I've joined I'm considered a "young one".  If you haven't guessed yet, I have a joined a local group of Red Hatters.  Now, officially to wear the outlandishly decorated and flamboyant red hat, you must be at least 50 years old.  I have a few more years to reach that mark, so I and few other "young" ladies in the group get to wear pink hats.  That's fine with me, pink is my favorite color anyway.

The ladies meet monthly for dinner at different restaurants.  They also do some charity work during the holidays.  They also plan outings depending on the season.  We have a great trip planned for October to visit a plantation near Williamsburg, Virginia for a haunting good time and tea.  I can' wait.  The ride should be lovely with the changing foilage and I love antiques and history.

Needless to say, I've made new friends and I've gone shopping for a new pink hat!

Virginia is a great place to live or visit for many reasons.  One reason is the vairety of music concerts available this summer for patrons to experience.  Whether you are heading to the mountains of the Blue Ridge or feeling the need to sink your toes in the sand at Virginia Beach, most likely there will be music nearby.

If you live in or near Richmond, the state capital, most concerts can be reached within a short drive.  What better to do this summer than pack your family members or friends in the car and head out and enjoy the beautiful scenery Virginia has to offer and end up at a great concert?

A few of the concerts happening this week are:

Tonight, Aug. 18th, 7:30 PM, Richmond Coliseum -- Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band. Check the box office or Ticketmaster for available seating at 804-78-4970.

If a quick trip to the beach (and scoring points) with your pre-teen or teenager is more what you had in mind then:

Tuesday, Aug. 19th, 7:00 PM, Virginia Beach Amphitheatre -- Jonas Brothers with Demi Lovato.  For ticket info, call 757-368-3000.  (You may want to take some earplugs to escape all the screaming from the girls)

Wednesday, Aug. 20th, 7:30 PM, Wolf Trap, Vienna -- Classic Country Star-Kenny Rogers and the Oak Ridge Boys.  For more info call 877-965-3872.

Friday, Aug. 22nd, 6:00 PM, Short Pump Town Center -- Short Pump Summer Series Presents Ron Moody & The Centaurs.  A great place for shopping, dining and the concert!  Call 360-1700 for more info.  This event is free.

Friday, Aug. 22nd, 4:00 PM & Sat., Aug. 23rd, 2:00 PM, 24th Street Park, Virginia Beach -- Soul Music Beachfest including star acts like Lakeside (get your funk on) and Bob Baldwin.  For more info on this venue call 757-491-SUNN.

Whatever your taste in music, Virginia has got you covered this summer.  Get out there and shake your groove thing and enjoy yourself!!

Those people who like to go shopping at flea markets on the weekend will enjoy The Richmond Big Flea Market which is scheduled for this coming weekend.  There will be over 200 booths to scavange through!  Oh Boy!  I love rooting around to find that "one of kind special something" to take home.  Then finding that "just perfect" spot for it!

This is a great place for new homeowners to find some great decorating pieces at reasonable prices.  If you are just in the mood for a change and want something you may not see everywhere else, then the flea market is a great place to visit.

So mark your calendars and bring a big bag to fill with all your goodies and don't forget to wear comfortable shoes!

This Saturday and Sunday -- August 2nd & 3rd

10 - 5 on Sat  And 11 - 5 on Sun  $5 admission

Location is at the Richmond Raceway, 600 E Laburnum Avenue, Richmond, VA  23222

(This is a big, air conditioned building full of fun findings!)

Well I held an open house today at a beautiful home in Chester.  I was pretty excited about it.  I know, I know, rarely do visitors of an open house actually buy that house.  Even so, I was still excited.  As I said, this home is truly beautiful and decorated so tastefully by the young owners.

Now I've been an agent for less than a year.  During this time, my biggest repeat "realtor" job has been doing open houses for other agents.  I've done enough now that I feel I'm actually getting good at them.  I know the drill--advertise--get the word out, make colorful, informative flyers, know the area, etc.  After this, it's out of my control whether folks show up or not.  I can only hope for a good turn out so I can at least tell the owners we did have some traffic and hopefully they can keep their spirits up.

I was a bit nervous this morning about the day ahead.  I don't know why, just was.  After reading my horoscope that pops up on my screen each morning (I realize some person dreams up stuff to say about each zodiac sign and hits send) I felt better.  My horoscope stated that if I got up and out early today, I would have a good day.  Well, I was at Starbuck's before 8:30 and had my balloons and signs in place before 9.  The sun was shining and it was already getting a bit sticky and hot outside.  I felt just maybe, it really was going to be a good day!!

I arrived at my open house, chatted with the owners, saw them off, and set up my display for all the visitors I was hoping would be coming through the door.  The showing started at 1.  By 2 with no visitors the sun was gone.  In its place was some seriously dark clouds followed soon by strong winds, thunder and of course lightning.  By 3 there was a break in the storm.  I thought ok now maybe the visitors will make a mad dash to see this house before 4:00 when the open house ends.  No sooner than I had that thought, I heard a strange sound outside.  I went to one of the large windows and couldn't believe it.  HAIL!  Not small little drops but huge quarter size hail pellets coming down fast and hard.  Before long the mulched flower beds were icey white.  The deck was covered in what at first look seemed to be moth balls.  This went on for a few minutes.  I watched the pellets fall along with my signs out front as the wind took them down and across the street.

Finally, by just before 4 the hail was gone, I got my signs back in the right yard and a light rain was all that remained.

Oh and after all this exciting weather, two separate parties did come by.  A woman looking at the house due to relocating and a nice man who called and asked if I could wait til 4:30 for him.  He'd gotten stuck in the weather and was running late.  Who'd have guessed?  I waited.

I may not have gotten a sale today ( I thought that's what would make it a good day) but I did meet some very nice people today.  I enjoyed talking with each of them. I also enjoyed the home I was showing.  Even Mother Nature and her fun with the weather turned out to be really interesting.  Hopefully, the man I waited for will remember that I did wait so he didn't make a trip for nothing and let me help him find a home for he and his wife.

At the end of it all I got to come home to my crew.  A great guy, one of my beautiful daughters, and the sweetest white fluff ball with big black eyes that are only for me.  I did have a good day!  Hope your day was good too!

Well it's here!  July 4th.  The day we Americans celebrate the independence that our forefathers fought for.  The independence that now our many American heroes in the Armed Services fight to protect every day.

Here in Virginia there will be countless celebrations throughout the state.  Some of the more prominent celebrations will be at the big amusement parksKings Dominion in Doswell and Busch Gardens in Williamsburg.

I represent homes from Richmond and surrounding areas, Chesterfield, Chester, Colonial Heights, and Petersburg. These localities have a history of great community and family celebrations year after year.
