Within in the next few weeks Asheville and our surrounding mountains will resemble a quilt, a blaze with a multitude of colors; reds, oranges, lots of yellow and everything in between. Town of Laurel Park History.

The late 1800's was the beginning of what is now the Town of Laurel Park. Dotted with summer cottages, inns, camps, bungalows and recreation areas around the lakes on the lower slopes of Echo Mountain, drew folks to the cool mountains. By 1903, a rail line had been built up Fifth Avenue in Hendersonville to bring day-trippers and summer visitors to Rainbow Lake to enjoy swimming, boating, dancing, camping, and gambling at the Laurel Park Casino. Later, another rail line and a canal connected Rainbow Lake with Laurel Lake (Rhododendron Lake), and a counter-balanced railway took sightseers from Crystal Spring (near Rainbow Lake) to an observation tower for views of downtown Hendersonville and near and distant mountains. Laurel Park has natural springs, small lakes and numerous small waterfalls and streams.

Historic Downtown Hendersonville is just 1 mile from Laurel Park. Excellent shopping, antiques, art galleries, childrens museum, food, pubs, entertainment and more.

Historic Hyman Heights - Listed on the National Register of Historic Places!

This neighborhood, just off Main St. in Historic Downtown Hendersonville is full of charm and character.

Hyman Heights was platted in 1908 and eventually merged with the Mount Royal section, which was platted in 1923. The area began its real growth with the opening of Hendersonville’s first hospital, Patton Hospital, in 1913 on Highland Avenue. Many local physicians built homes in the neighborhood during the hospital’s life in styles such as Craftsman Bungalow, Colonial Revival, Ranch, Four Square, and others. Killarney, a stone Gothic Revival, is the oldest home dating to 1858. There are 123 contributing houses/outbuildings.
