Mutton Bustin' at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo – riding the sheep. Hilarious! Here are the rules: participants must be between the ages of 5 and 6 years old participants must not weigh more than 60 pounds. The child attempts to hang around as long as he can as he attempts to “ride the sheep” toward the finish line. Bustin a mutton. LOL! Hilarious! To add to the hilarity, last night when the winner was interviewed, instead of answering into the microphone, the winner (a little girl) whispered the answer to the questions into the ear of the (5 comments)

So, it is St. Paddy's Day, and you want to get moving, but your knees are bad? Here is the activity for you - Irish Hand Dancing. At the moment, I am not sure if Irish Hand Dancing means the dancing is Irish, the Hands are Irish, or that Irish are doing it. But I do know that those people who use their knees as an excuse to not exercise (and you all know who you are) can now put that aside. Suzanne Cleary and Peter Harding, alumni of the Broadway hit, "Riverdance," show us how it is done. I am (6 comments)

"The Black Velvet Band" is an Irish version of a broadside ballad, or folksong dating back to the early 19th century. Although on the face of it is a love song, it has as its context “transportation” to Australia, a common 19th century punishment. The singer is a tradesman who tells about a young woman he meets who has stolen an item and passed it on to him. He goes to court the next day and is charged with stealing the item. He receives the blame, and as punishment is (0 comments)

I love my hammered dulcimer. My husband bought me one for my birthday some years ago. I love the sound. Tinkling, like a harp. The dulcimer was played extensively during the Middle Ages. I came across the dulcimer in person for the first time near Fredericksburg, Texas. A great little town. I heard someone playing and had to stop what I was doing and made tracks to the source. Loved it from the start. The hammered dulcimer derives its name from (4 comments)

Coping With The Unspeakable - 03/13/11 06:50 PM
Coping With The Unspeakable. My husband and I love music of all kinds. We love to sing and we play several instruments (some less well than others.) There is something about music that charms us, soothes us, inspires us. And we find ourselves constantly circling around music. Some years ago, when my husband was learning to play the bagpipe, we acquired a taste for Scottish and Irish things. One day, while doing a little research trying to find authentic Irish and Scottish music, we came across an interesting cassette tape (anyone remember THAT technology? It followed 8-tracks). The cassette we found (0 comments)
To my knowledge, I am not Irish – unless it is in the sense of being Heinz 57. But I DO love the tin whistle. I love to play the tin whistle and often play it in the car to and from work during my hour long drive (don’t worry – I am not driving. My husband is.). When I began playing the Irish whistle, I made a decision to learn this instrument more by ear than by written notes. I first learned the scales, and then immediately began to play. In general, if (3 comments)

"The Wearing of the Green" is Irish street ballad dating back to the repression around the time of the Irish Rebellion (1798). Wearing a shamrock on your hat was a sign of rebellion and green was the colour of the Society of the United Irishmen (a revolutionary organization).
Well, that has ZERO to do with being a green builder, but we thought you might (3 comments)
Trying to decide on a closing gift is always a real challenge. You have to stay under the legal limits, you want to personalize it to fit your clients, to serve their needs, to give them a special memory, to get referral mileage out of it…So, how to decide when these things do not all coincide. In my opinion, it is far better to try to meet THEIR needs than it is to try to capitalize on an opportunity to market to others. Are they (5 comments)
