Perspective--Is The Cistern Half Empty or Half Full? - 07/31/10 12:48 PM
In a matter of less than 24 hours my truck died (on the way to an appointment no less) and I accidentally emptied our cistern of all the water (on a slow response well...Lord have mercy!).  No big...except that they can't have my truck fixed until next week and I had friends visiting for the weekend with no hope of water in our house for another 12 hours.  Oh...did I mention that my husband had to leave work to come out to the boonies to pick me up in his truck (which, btw, didn't have AC)?  It wasn't a good day.  Tensions were running high … (9 comments)

Number 123 In The State of Texas...But, Hey, I Got Here The Hard Way - 07/30/10 09:38 AM
All right! All right!  I confess...I do look at my ranking on Active Rain in hopes to one day be a little farther up the board.  So, I peaked at my competition to see what they were blogging about...just for grins.  I figured...maybe their blogs could give me ideas for future blogs.  It didn't take me long to realize that most of their blogs were their new listings.  (Insert air being let outta my idealistic balloon here).
Here I was thinking that all of those Active Rainer's that were ahead of me were blogging their little hearts out with riveting, … (13 comments)

South Texas Ranch Rodeo--A Taste of the Old West Coming To Boerne, TX This Weekend - 07/28/10 11:10 AM
Back in the day...or at least "my day"...kids like myself couldn't wait for the times when we could watch shows like Roy Rogers, Sky King, Bonanza, The Rifleman, Wagon Train and Gunsmoke.  It wouldn't be unusual to see scenes in those programs where there would be a "friendly" competition to see who could rope the best or brand their steer the fastest.  To me it was a fantasy I only dreamed of...but here in South Texas it's been going on for decades.

If you have ever wondered just what real working cowboys do during their work week...then you need to take the … (4 comments)

I guess frogs squeal when they have important to something to say... - 07/27/10 11:02 AM
Here's a news flash you probably didn't think you'd get today...frogs squeal.  I ain't talkin about croaking or grunting...I'm talkin squeal...like a pig or a bird in distress.  I was out planting a rose bush while my chickens were peckin and scratchin around me when I heard this incredible squeeeeeeeeeeeeal come from the porch.  I immediately thought that one of our new little baby birds had fallen from the nest...but much to my surprise it was a frog squealin his lungs out...mainly due to the fact that there were three chickens surrounding him...eyeing him for some good eatin.
I shoo'd the … (4 comments)

How Does "Your" Garden Grow? - 07/26/10 11:30 AM
For those of you that don't live in Texas...we garden here year round...  We recently moved to our new place just outside of Boerne, Texas and it came complete with 10 laying chickens and a wannabe garden.  The folks that owned the place before us had good intentions of having a beautiful raised bed garden, but a job opportunity took them elsewhere and all that was left were some good bones for us to work with.
Larry and I both saw the potential...but we also saw all the work it was gonna take to put in the garden.  The soil was rocky … (12 comments)

Coming To My Kitchen Near You--Cookin With A Rural Attitude - 07/23/10 10:35 AM

I'm not Martha Stewart, Rachel Ray, Emeril (what's his last name?) or even the next Food Network Star...just a "rural lifestyler" that is longing for a piece of yesterday.  Don't get me wrong...I don't want or need to live in the past...but I do want to grab the simplicity of yesterday and incorporate it into my today.  And who wouldn't like a little simplicity brought back into their lives?
One of my fondest memories as a child was watching my Mom get together with neighbors to spend the day canning everything from green beans to peaches.  I can still feel … (12 comments)

Sarah Dog--Facing The Sunset - 07/16/10 10:36 AM
While I am typing this blog I can hear our thirteen year old Golden Retriever, Sarah, wrestle between panting and labored breathing... we knew this day was coming.  We had noticed a change in Sarah this past February.  She went with us on a walk and got wore out towards the end...so not like her.  Then, within the next 24 hours, we noticed she was swelling up.  Something was wrong.  We took her to the doctor and found out that she had cancer.  They took blood to see how far along it was...and gave her nine months...at best...to live.
Not Sarah...couldn't be.  She … (8 comments)

A Pullet's' Progress Part 2--It's Like Potty Training All Over Again...Except Without the Potty - 07/15/10 11:31 AM
I remember getting knots in my stomach as I would face each day of potty training my kids...  I knew I needed to be consistent to make it work.  The trouble was...I had a hard time being consistent.  Not because I didn't want to be...but because I had two toddlers and a baby to keep track of in the midst of trying to get across basic principles to my kids on the art of making a "poo poo in the potty".  Okay...so take that angst times eleven...and you will see my dilema with my pullets (ever-growing-hens-to-be).
When we last left our … (3 comments)

Snug As A Bug In A...Pile of Dung - 07/14/10 11:31 AM
It had been a  hot and muggy day and I had just started making dinner when my husband, Larry came in from outside holding an old shipping envelope...obviously with something in it.
"Wanna see something cool?"
I have learned to respond to that question with great hesitancy in that you never know what Larry is gonna drag into the house.
"Um....sure", I said, peeking into the top of the envelope.  "Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeew!  What is it?"

"It's a husband and wife dung beetle couple with their ball of dung", he said proudly.
He then went on to tell me al-l-l-l-l-l about dung beetles.  … (9 comments)

Down On The Farm Radio Website Launched Today! - 07/08/10 10:43 PM

It's been a long time coming...but my husband's website for his Ag news radio program is finally live!  Larry has been hosting the most popular farm and ranch program in Texas, covering 100,000 square miles, for nearly 14 years.  He took the show from a 15 minute spot on KKYX-680 AM to full hour and now thousands of top producers listen to his show every day from 12:05-1:00p.m..  If you are a farmer or rancher the show is essential for the latest market reports as well as auction prices.  If you are a hobby farmer, wannabe, or are just interested in the rural lifestyle...there's … (4 comments)

You Can Subscribe to My Blog...But Can They? - 07/05/10 10:30 AM
Maybe you all could help me out here...  Is there a way for non Active Rainers to subscribe to my blog?  Don't get me wrong...I love having you all subscribe to my blog...but would love it if my neighbors and potential clients could do the same thing.
Maybe it's there...meaning a way for them to subscribe.  If it is...I guess I haven't seen it or I'm not looking.  So tell me how I can optimize others looking at my blog other than what I am doing already...which is:
1.  Posting it to my Facebook and Twitter.
2.  Sending my Localism link to … (25 comments)

Good Ol Texas Mustang Grapes...From Backyard to Jelly Jar - 07/05/10 10:08 AM
With all the rain we have had this year I just KNEW that there would be a good mustang grape crop...so I have been putting the word out to all my friends that if they had grapes...I wanted them.  I also said I would gladly exchange my grape jelly for their grapes.  Seems like an even trade...doesn't it???
I was making one of those requests to our new friend Joe, of the Broke Stone Pizza Company in Boerne, TX just a couple of days ago.  He was telling me that he hadn't seen any...yet...but did have some figs that he would … (6 comments)

Put the brakes on...stop...get out of the car...and take a look. - 07/04/10 11:41 AM
My husband and I took a horse ride down our country road just outside Boerne, TX...only this time we went the opposite direction that we normally would take.  I have driven  flown by this stretch of road hundreds of times and thought I knew each house and farm along the way...until today.  It's amazing how different things look going zero miles an hour vs 45 miles an hour.
"Dang, honey...look how pretty that place is.  I never knew they had a view from their back porch".
With each step our horses took I was able to see things I never saw … (11 comments)

Celebrating the 4th With A Rural Attitude - 07/01/10 03:06 PM
Holidays are a great excuse for celebrating...especially the 4th of July.  Out here in the country...well...we have our own way of doing things.  So...I thought I might pass on some of these helpful hints for the holidays:
If you can't find your horseshoes for the family picnic...you might try this: If you're expecting a crowd for your cook out and run out of wienie sticks...try this: Don't have a grill?  Ya got the food on the table...drinks ready...plates, napkins and flatware...  Crum!  You forgot about a patriotic centerpiece.  Never fear...you can always try this: Nothing for your kids to wear to the picnic???  Grab … (6 comments)

Leasing--The "Lousy T-Shirt" of Commissions? - 07/01/10 09:51 AM
I've been showing ALOT of lease clients lately...  Don't get me wrong...love each one of them and know that they could eventually lead to a sale.  That's not the issue.  And frankly, there may not be an issue here...that's why I am deferring to you.
Here's the question..."Should lease commissions on homes for the leasing agent be a tad higher?"  I recently brought a good client to a listing agent on a home where he had just put the sign in the yard.  His commission?...$1100.  My commission?...$250.  After my broker split, I got $175.  That didn't even pay my gas for the … (6 comments)
