asheville nc: Celebrate Columbus Day With a Discovery of Your Own - 10/10/16 12:18 AM
October 10 is Columbus Day and what better way to celebrate Chris' place in our country's history than with a discovery of your own!
People come to the mountains of western North Carolina for a lot of reasons - the climate, the incredible scenery, fly fishing, mountain biking, and a host of other outdoor sports. For a lot of folks, they come here to enjoy all those things on vacation and end up finding out that this is the kind of place where they really want to live. In this crazy world, there is a lot to be said for the peace and … (3 comments)

asheville nc: Hiking in western North Carolina - 03/02/16 02:27 AM
There are still some lingering signs of winter, but the calendar reminds us that we are only weeks away from spring.  Yay! After living in Florida for over 30 years, I had forgotten just how spectacular spring really is until we relocated to western North Carolina nearly 11 years ago.  Now it's my second favorite season (second only to fall).
As the daytime temperatures start to warm up, so do the thoughts of enjoying the great outdoors.  In Transylvania County, where we live, over 50% of the land is publicly owned and protected so it can be enjoyed by everyone for generations to come. … (1 comments)

asheville nc: Understanding the Ins and Outs of Due Diligence - 06/18/14 05:25 AM

If you are buying or selling property in North Carolina you need to understand the ins and outs of Due Diligence.  It’s a wrinkle in the Offer to Purchase brought to us a couple of years ago by the good folks in Raleigh.
In the most general of terms, whether you are buying a home, a car, or a stock, “doing due diligence” is thought of as the time you do your research about whatever it is you are buying. In real estate, it means that and a lot more and it has some major implications.
Before the real estate commission changed our … (0 comments)

asheville nc: Learning how to blink.... - 05/31/14 07:22 AM
I knew I would enjoy working with these new buyers after the first email exchange.

In the book Blink, it illustrates how we think without thinking and delves into the reasons why some people are able to make quick and decisive decisions while others seem incapable of making a decision about anything. While the book deals mostly with face to face communication, I believe you can tell a lot about a person from their electronic communication too. It's a good read and a theory that any Realtor can appreciate. In this job we have to be able to size people … (0 comments)

asheville nc: 5 Things You Can Do Right Now If you Want To Sell Your Home. - 04/25/14 06:02 AM

The spring selling season is here in western North Carolina and there are 5 things you can do right now if you want to sell your home this year.
1. De-clutter every room and closet. This step is so basic yet so important for several reasons. When a house is cluttered, two things can happen. A buyer can be so overwhelmed by all the "stuff" that they overlook the great features of your home. And/or they log it in their brain that the home doesn't have enough storage. Neither scenario is good for you if you are trying to … (0 comments)

asheville nc: Mr. Banker, You've Gone Too Far! - 04/25/14 02:02 AM
Nothing makes me happier than when a sale includes two cooperating sides. All too often, one side or the other just makes things harder than they need to be. But when both sides are happy, cooperating, and communicating, well, it's just magic.
So it was with a recent deal between our buyer and another agent's seller. Everything was going along just perfectly. We were even feeling the love with the attorney, something that doesn't always happen.
We were all happy campers and you could almost hear Kumbaya in the background. That is, until the lender entered the picture, throwing cold water … (0 comments)

asheville nc: Understanding Home Inspections - 02/01/12 04:59 AM
The buyers and sellers have come to an agreement on all the points of the offer to purchase. Escrow checks have been paid and all parties are moving forward toward a happy closing. Then comes the home inspection and suddenly the entire process comes to a grinding halt.  As a Realtor, if you've ever seen a deal go down the drain because of the results of a home inspection, you've also seen a lot of your time and hard work go down the drain with it. And whether you are a seller counting on a sale so you can get on … (2 comments)

asheville nc: We've moved! - 06/04/11 02:08 AM
In any relationship, knowing you're with the right partner is important and being in the real estate business is no different. So on June 1, Robert and I left Keller Williams and moved to Looking Glass Realty, LLC.  The two firms couldn't be more different and after being courted by several real estate companies in the Brevard, NC area, we came to the conclusion that Looking Glass was the best fit for the way we do business, how we see the future of real estate, and to coin the street term... how we roll.
It wasn't a decision we came to … (5 comments)

If you're looking for ways to save money.... get your groove on with Groupon!
These days, I'm all about finding ways to save money any way I can. So I was intrigued when I started hearing about Groupon.  I'm still learning my way around the site and the concept, but Groupon is a free email subscription that sends you great deals on restaurants and services in your area. In the last few weeks I've received notices about discounts to a variety of area restaurants including one today that was a "groupon" of $15 for $35 worth of Tapas at Zambras, a … (0 comments)

asheville nc: Sweet Holiday Memories - 11/21/10 02:52 PM
There are few things that conjure up memories of my childhood quite the way cooking does. The simplest things like the smell of bacon cooking in the morning or the perfect summer cantaloupe takes me back to my grandmother’s kitchen in Pine Island, Louisiana where I spent some of my summer vacations as a child. This time of year, though, I wait anxiously for fresh cranberries to show up in the grocery store so I can make my mother’s cranberry bread.  It has been a seasonal tradition in my family for as long as I can remember and now, every loaf … (0 comments)

asheville nc: Things to do in Brevard, NC - It's Leaf Looking Season! - 09/27/10 06:41 AM
Here we are heading into the last week of September and the forecast is already calling for day time temperatures only in the mid 70's with some nights dropping down to the 40's. The temperature isn't the only thing that is changing these days, though. In higher elevations, certain trees have already started changing colors, creating splashes of reds and yellows on the mountain side signaling the start of the "leaf looker" season.
In the highest elevations, 4,500 ft and up, green is still the predominant color, but the Sugar Maples and Sourwoods have started to show their colors as have … (0 comments)

asheville nc: Staying positive in a negative world. - 09/09/10 03:58 AM
It's not easy being in the real estate business right now. When I meet people for the first time and they ask what I do, I tell them I'm in real estate. You can see the "Oh, I'm so sorry" look on their face almost immediately. It's like I've told them I have a terminal illness and only have 24 hours to live.
Difficult times like these bring out the best and the worst in most of us, including buyers and sellers. Just the other day, we got a phone call about a property we have listed. The man had seen … (4 comments)

asheville nc: Golf Course Communities - Homes and Land for Sale in Western North Carolina - 05/11/10 04:03 PM
If you're a golfer, you already know that there's just something special about a day on the course. Here in western North Carolina, where we play "mountain golf" the spectacular mountain views, the cool summer breezes, and the challenge of playing a course that is any thing but flat, makes any round of golf pretty interesting.
Before moving here permanantly, I vacationed here so I spent time on a number of the golf courses in the area where I lost more than my fair share of balls to the creeks, cliffs, and crevices!
So with that theme in mind, I want … (0 comments)

asheville nc: Life is Good in Brevard, NC - 03/28/10 02:32 AM
There are so many things that I love about living in the Brevard, NC area that I could write 1,000 blogs and not come close to saying it all. From the beautiful four seasons, to the quiet and peaceful way of life and friendly people, there is no place I'd rather be.
We work with a lot of out of state buyers and often times their trips to Brevard are hurried as they are trying to squeeze as much into their visit as possible. But once they find their dream home and start coming here for extended visits, they too begin … (1 comments)
