Do People Really Understand What Real Estate Consultants Do for Them? - 10/29/08 02:27 AM
Do People Really Understand What We Do for Them, or Do They Think We Just Put a Sign in the Yard and Drive Them Around? - What I Learned From My 5 Year Old.

I have been around the real estate industry most of my life. My mom opened her first mortgage company when I was six, and I grew up thinking that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were friends of my parents. It's hard for me to remember a time that I wasn't familiar with many concepts and definitions in the real estate industry that are not so common … (11 comments)

Costa Mesa Real Estate Minute October 26, 2008 - Costa Mesa Market Report - 10/27/08 12:09 AM
Originally no more than a way station built by Spanish missionaries, Costa Mesa's first real estate development occurred in the 1880s. This failed to prosper, but Costa Mesa became an agricultural center known for apples and lima beans.
Long time residents may remember when the area was called Fairview and Paularino, but today, the city is a focal point in Orange County with the Orange County Performing Arts Center, South Coast Repertory Theatre and South Coast Plaza as major drawing points. It is hard to believe that Costa Mesa was once nicknamed "Goat Hill" because of its rural flavor.

I Refuse to Participate in a Recession - 10/23/08 03:21 AM
Turn on the evening news, read the front page of the paper, flip to CNN, turn on news radio and you'll hear that the stock exchange is down, the world economy is crumbling, banks are failing, and real estate is tumbling.

It would be so easy to fall into a depression just from thinking about all of the potential economic problems.
With all of the negativity, the concern, the frustration, I found I had a decision to make.  I know that some people make more money in tough times than in great ones.  I know that some become millionaires … (43 comments)

2,000 Comments Made & Over 800 Received - What Have I Learned During My Time in the Rain? - 10/12/08 12:55 AM
I realized last night that I was making my 2,000th comment on Active Rain.  It made me pause and think about what I've learned by making those 2,000 comments and what I've learned from my entire Active Rain experience.
I started reading the blogs and commenting to rack up points. (I know bad form, arguments for and against, etc.). The thing was that it didn't take me long to find out that there were much better reasons for reading the other blogs and commenting than just points.  In fact, it turns out that points are only a very small part of … (28 comments)

My Sister's Last Childless Birthday - or OMG - It's Really Time to Grow Up! - 10/06/08 01:32 AM
My little sister turned 37 yesterday.  37 that amazes me!  She's my little sister, and if she's 37, what does that make me?
When we were little, she was always my tag-along little sis.  She was a part of almost every memory I have growing up.  We are a little over 1 1/2 years apart, and I have very few memories before her.
For all the adventures we had growing up

from selling lemonade, to selling flower pots (another story for another day), to trips to Disneyland,

she was always present.  Then, I was 17 and graduating high school and heading for Cal.  … (32 comments)

What my 4 Year Old Son has Learned about Taxes - 10/04/08 12:23 AM
When I was a kid, Mom taught me that taxes could be good and bad, depending upon your point of view.

When I had something she wanted, she would claim "mom" tax.  For instance, if I had an ice cream, she could get a bite by claiming "mom" tax.  Fortunately, for me, it worked both ways.  If she had a cookie, I could claim "kid" tax.
In fact, it's ingrained so deeply in our family, that my sister called me a year or so ago and asked me to explain "girlfriend" tax to her boyfriend.  I said, "Well, for instance … (10 comments)
