Originally no more than a way station built by Spanish missionaries, Costa Mesa's first real estate development occurred in the 1880s. This failed to prosper, but Costa Mesa became an agricultural center known for apples and lima beans.
Long time residents may remember when the area was called Fairview and Paularino, but today, the city is a focal point in Orange County with the Orange County Performing Arts Center, South Coast Repertory Theatre and South Coast Plaza as major drawing points. It is hard to believe that Costa Mesa was once nicknamed "Goat Hill" because of its rural flavor.

According to the latest numbers from Mortgage Bankers' Association, 9% of all Americans with a home mortgage are either in delinquent or in default on their mortgages.
The effect is being felt in record number of foreclosures and also in bank failures, and now the U.S. Government is planning on taking over Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Fannie and Freddie are government sponsored entities which, between the two of them, own or guarantee nearly one-half of the approximately $12 trillion in mortgages in the U.S.

The Costa Mesa Real Estate report for September 3, 2008 is as follows:
There are 347 homes currently for sale in Costa Mesa.  254 of these are single family (SFR) homes.  93 are condos.
99 homes are in escrow, conditionally sold. 77 are SFRs. 22 are condos.
2 homes have closed escrow in September.
58 homes closed escrow in August. 
The median price of homes in August was $494,950.  The average price of a home was $520,724.
Six homes were listed today. No homes were placed in escrow since our last post.  
One listing expired today - meaning that it did not sell during the period of the listing contract; four were cancelled. Three listings were put on hold today.

The Costa Mesa Real Estate report for August 23, 2008 is as follows:
There are 348 homes currently for sale in Costa Mesa.  253 of these are single family (SFR) homes.  95 are condos.
113 homes are in escrow, conditionally sold. 89 are SFRs. 24 are condos.
30 homes have closed escrow in August. 
The median price of homes in August is $482,000.  The average price of a home is $490,697.
No homes were listed today. One homes was placed in escrow since our last post.
