marketing: Facebook: Get your visitors to land where you want them - 02/08/11 01:02 AM
Did you know that when your Facebook visitors come to your business page, they don't have to land on the wall?  In fact, I seldom suggest having visitors land there.  Why?  You don't control the formatting or the message they receive as their FIRST IMPRESSION.  I suggest controlling where they land through the use of tabs.
Most already know what a Facebook tab is so I am going to skip that portion of the lesson to keep this short and sweet.  To change the landing tab.
Go to your facebook business page and click Edit Page. Go to Manage Permissions 6 … (12 comments)

marketing: What the Super Bowl teaches us about ourselves - 02/07/11 01:51 AM
I have done speeches and presentations to groups to help them self motivate and increase their sales / business / customer list and I always use sports analogies when I do so.  Why?  It is something that I am very familiar with having grown up playing just about every sport imaginable.  And secondly because most people have at least tried a few sports and understand how hard it is.
What makes the Packers better than say the Dolphins?
Is it raw talent?  Most would agree that to play in the NFL you were born with some inate talent and you were … (0 comments)

marketing: WHY ARE YOU SHOUTING AT ME? Mistakes in your MLS Listings - 01/28/11 01:46 AM
As many of you, I look at tons of listings on a daily basis and there are a few that really make me want to hunt down that realtor and shake them.
DON'T SHOUT AT ME:  Typing in all caps is the online equivalent of yelling.  Use your inside voice.  It isn't that tough to hit the shift key for the start of a sentence. Waterfront View:  If I have to lean over a fence and look between 2 trees to see a snippet of water, that is not waterfront view.  A retention pond is also not Waterfront even though it is … (6 comments)

marketing: Standing out in a Crowd - 01/25/11 11:58 PM
Earlier this week, I spent the day at the Orange County Convention Center at the ASI (Advertising Specialties) Show.  ASI is the trade association that brings you all of your promotional products.
As I walked the floor looking for new ideas, I realized there were over 1,000 companies represented there.  How does one company differentiate their logoed highlighter over another?  Whose aluminum water bottle really is the best?  It is a give away, do I even care if I am giving out the best click pen or stress ball?
As I realized that I never looked at the company's banner to … (3 comments)

marketing: Business Cards - They look pretty but do they work? - Not what you think this story is about. - 01/24/11 11:59 PM
We talk alot about professional presentation, attention to details and what to put or not put on our business cards, but did we think about what we print them on?
No this isn't going to be a "Live Green Like Me" speech, though cards printed on seed paper are cool if people actually planted your business card when they were done with it.
No, this is something we don't think about until we have to think about it.  What paper do we print on and do we coat it correctly?
Now, I have made the mistake of making a beautiful card … (14 comments)

marketing: DIY, Custom or Canned - Which Web Site Should You Choose? - 01/19/11 01:54 AM
As somebody who has worked on the supplier side of the web market since 1999, I can tell you that this is a roller coaster industry that has changed the answer to that question numerous times.  Everybody knows somebody who has a kid who can design a web site or has a guy that can do one for $200 or something like that.  Heck, Intuit brags that you can do it yourself for like $8 a month.  But can you?  and what is the result?
In 1999 when I started in the industry, the answer was Custom if you wanted it … (3 comments)
