Pay It Forward - Opportunities are everywhere! - 12/22/10 10:38 AM
I wrote my first Pay It Forward blog this past Sunday night.  I just found out about this group from a fellow active-rainer, co-worker, and friend Chris Ann Cleland.  So here is my second blog for the month
(I guess I won't make the 4 posts for December because I came in late, so I am going to overload this one with my weeks activites).

Monday morning I was scheduled to volunteer at the House of Mercy Thrift store in Manassas, VA http://activerain.com/blogsview/2009849/great-cause-getting-attention-in-gainesville-va.  As I am getting ready, I received a call from my Long & Foster office in Gainesville, … (2 comments)

T'was the Night before Christmas... - 12/20/10 10:30 PM
What is your Christmas tradition and are you passing it down to your family?
I have such vivid memories of Christmas growing up in Virginia Beach.  Every Christmas eve my Dad would read the classic "The Night Before Christmas".  We would all gather around the fireplace and listen to him read it with such animation and excitement that I couldn't wait for it every year.  After reading the book we were all sent to bed (all 5 of us!) to try to fall asleep.
The next morning we would wake up, wait for my Dad to take a shower (he always took a shower just to … (8 comments)

Pay It Forward - Don't drive around the car broken down in the middle of the street! - 12/19/10 11:02 PM
My family was heading home from church tonight and were stopped at a stop light behind a truck.  When the light changed and everyone else started moving except us, we were a little perplexed.  At first we thought to beep the horn and give the guy a little nudge.  Everyone else was going around and beeping at us, but then we realized that he was broken down and knew we had to see if he needed help.
Long story short, his truck wouldn't start, we jumped it 3 or 4 times, it started each time, but wouldn't hold a charge.  Once … (9 comments)

Kodak Moment - Why I do what I do.... - 12/17/10 10:42 PM
I spent all 41 years of my life following men around the world, starting in Japan.  Yes, I was a Navy brat and now as the wife of a Warrant Officer in the U.S. Coast Guard I find myself in Bristow, VA just outside of Washington D.C.

Family is everything, I would follow them anywhere.

Some of the best memories of my life are of time spent with family at the beach.  As a kid we used to visit my Dad's family at their beach house in Waterford, CT, we visited my Mom's family in Hollywood, FL, spent time in our timeshare … (8 comments)

the Lame Duck weeks - 6.5 things you can do. - 12/17/10 09:28 AM
Thanks, I needed the motivation to get my butt in gear at the end of this year.  I think your simple "task list" is a great idea and I will "pencil" it into my schedule.  I am the type that needs to cleanse and organize.  The time is now.  Enjoy your next two weeks, and good luck today!

Feeling Lackluster? Ways To Boost Your Energy - 12/16/10 09:31 AM
It is certainly in the air this time of year.  Exhausted and looking for more time to do the things you HAVE to not to mention the things you would LIKE to do this time of year is enough to bring you down.  Keeping a routine and not getting overwhelmed seems to be key.  Thanks for the boost!

Green Eggs & Facebook: 15 Social Media Tips from Dr Seuss - 12/12/10 02:59 PM

Yes, Dr. Suess may have some crazy rhymes and guys drawn in his books. However, if you look at the core of his thoughts and words, the man was brilliant. I think he can teach us some nice … (0 comments)

Pretty paper, pretty ribbons of blue.. - 12/12/10 02:45 PM
Dave, this blog is music to my ears.  I too try to find some extra time and money during the Holiday season to help others.  In my area I have just recently starting volunteering (http://activerain.com/blogsview/2009849/great-cause-getting-attention-in-gainesville-va) on a weekly basis with House of Mercy, www.divinemercynow.org, and my kids have even gotten into the spirit of helping by putting together meals for those in need.  Thanks for the reminder and the great blog about getting out there and sharing yourself and your family with others.

Are you Using Evernote? If Not You Should Be! - 12/12/10 02:10 PM
What a great blog!  I just downloaded Evernote and took a picture of something with my Palm Pre Plus that would have been a pain to find a pen, paper, and write it down (not to mention find that piece of paper later when I needed it).  After taking the picutre I checked my laptop and miraculously it was there!  Thanks Debra for passing along this great FREE program.

My Christmas list just got a little bit bigger! - 12/11/10 10:53 PM
Ok, just a quick post to say that I am enamored with the new color touch-screen Nook from Barnes & Noble.  My son has it on his Christmas list this year so I have been doing a lot of research on it.  I have been in the Barnes & Noble store twice this weekend and spent some quality time at their fully staffed interactive booth.
So, I'm in the store today having a high tech conversation with the guy in charge of Nook sales at B&N in Manassas, VA when my cell phone rings.  I don't always pick up my cell when I … (9 comments)

The Power of Advertising?! - 12/08/10 05:07 PM
This coming from someone who professes to work my business through referrals!  I know there is much controversy over print ads, flyers, post cards, car magnets and the like.  I personally think that anything that gets your name in front of potential clients is a great thing.  That being said I also think that choosing what to spend your marketing dollars on is a huge part of being a successful agent.
I don't do non-specific mailings, I don't do print ads, I don't do flyers (all of this mainly because my marketing budget is minimal), but the car magnets kept me on the fence.  … (4 comments)

Great Cause getting attention in Gainesville, VA - 12/08/10 04:24 PM
As I have mentioned in a previous blog, Long & Foster in Gainesville, VA is collecting for "Coats for Kids" this year and I am spear-heading the distribution.
I went into the office on Monday and found our box was overflowing.  So, I set out calling the local schools for a "wish list" of coats and found that our box, while overflowing, certainly couldn't accomodate their needs.  At least not today.  Luckily we will be collecting throughout the winter months.  A colleague and myself even went to the local store and purchased a coat to try to dwindle the list down … (2 comments)
