Dalles Mountain Rd in the Columbia River Gorge

"Take another road to a higher place" Jimmy Buffett. It was one of calmest days in the Gorge when we decided to take a favorite drive over Dalles Mountain Road and have a picnic. Just past The Dalles Bridge into Washington, Dalles Mountain Road climbs up over the Klickitat Hills unveiling some of the best views of the area you will ever see. There are sweeping river and mountain views but also many scenic old abandoned farmhouses. We have often picniced at the Centerville School grounds with the large lawn for strolling next to the tiny antique church. Today we stopped by but had chosen another spot to picnic.

We saw more and more windmills in that Goldendale/Centerville area of Washington, many right down to the houses and the roads. We made the loop from Dalles Mountain Road through Centerville and onto 97, then down to Highway 14, past Maryhill Museum (more on that next week - it's time for the Art Festival there!) and stopped in at Maryhill Winery. There was a gentle breeze on the patio so we pulled out the picnic and had a bottle of rose' in the latticed shade. The amphitheatre was quiet then but was really jumping last Saturday night for the Yes and Styx concert so I've included pics of both.

We drove back to The Dalles along Hwy 14, past Avery Island and some great views of Mt. Hood, then over the bridge back to Oregon! It is a beautiful drive, give it a try!

Farmer's Market The Dalles, Oregon

It was one of the great days in The Dalles when we stopped by the Farmer's Market this morning, sunny and warm but not hot and NO WIND! We'd just finished a wonderful walk along the river on Riverfront Trail and decided to see what the market was offering. Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables along with farm fresh eggs and straight from the farm lamb, chicken an beef. There were interesting crafts too as well as fresh baked goods. You can visit the Farmer's Market every Saturday morning this summer from 8AM to 1PM in the City Park at 5th and Union Streets.

Today is also the kickoff for 10 days of activities for Fort Dalles Rodeo so there were lots of people out and about. Don't miss Jammin' July downtown this evening starting at 5pm. Lots of music, crafts and food there too!

Northwest Cherry Festival this weekend in The Dalles, Oregon

There will be plenty of action this weekend at the Northwest Cherry Festival in The Dalles, Oregon. This year's schedule of events features many new activities and sponsorships. Here is a sampling:

The annual Parade, this year's theme, Cherry Groove, sponsored by Bob Stone Freeway Auto Center is Saturday April 9th at 11AM. Grand Marshals are former mayor Robb Van Cleave and his wife Lisa. The Cherry Groove theme poster (see left) was desiged by Artist Joy Tigges of The Dalles.

The NEW Wasco County Farm Bureau Ag Fest will be held at the Civic Auditorium Saturday from noon to 5PM, featuring local farmers and orchardists and ag related businesses.

First ever Juried Art Show will be held at Westwind Frame and Gallery at 412 E. 2nd St.

The Lone Pine Village Vendor Market will be located on East Fourth Street, featuring local and regional vendors . In the center of the market, check out the great music at The Entertainment Stage featuring Hit Machine, Escapade and Joe Stoddard on Saturday from 11AM to 5PM

Rogue Ales is sponsoring the Hospitality Garden at the Entertainment Stage. Their ales feature barley gown in Wasco County!

The annual Classic Car Show sponsored by KODL has moved to Saturday in downtown The Dalles.

The Warming Place Opens in The Dalles, Oregon

The Warming Place has recently opened in The Dalles, Oregon. The purpose of the Warming Place is to give homeless people in the city a warm place to sleep during the cold weather. It is located at 315 W. 3rd Street, home of the St Vincent DePaul Community Meals. The site will open when temps go below 28 degrees or when there are heavy winds or snow.

When the site is open, hours will be 7pm to 7 am. Doors will lock at 9pm and no one else will be allowed in that evening. An "open" flag will be posted and the local media, police and other agencies will be notified on days the Warming Place is open. No meals are provided but coffee will sometimes be available. Patrons can leave at any time but cannot return that night.

The Warming Place started with 11 vinyl covered mats to soften the floor and 50 blankets which, when given, then belong to the recipient. The space has a capacity of 58 which organizers feel is adequate for The Dalles. The site is primarily for adults, if a family with children needs shelter, other arrangements will be made. Volunteers man the site, many from local churches and service groups.

According to Mike Kilkenny, Chairman of the St. Vincent Paul board, "It was open for a week in November and everything went well, normal start up issues to work through." Mike says they did hire a person to clean in the morning so the volunteers won't have to do as much in the mornings prior to leaving for the day but they can always use new volunteers!

Annual P.E.O. Home Tour Benefit features Dufur, Oregon homes this year!

Enjoy a great afternoon in the Dufur Valley as seven Dufur area homes are featured for this years P.E.O. Tour of Homes Benefit. Proceeds from the tour support women's scholarship programs.

From Historic 1800s era to contemporary homes of today, the owners of these homes have graciously opened them for the scholarship benefit. This is a great way to get interior decorating ideas and many of the homes will have paint color charts available with manufacturer and color name. Gardens will also be toured at many of the homes. Other local attractions include the recently restored Kramer's Market and the Historic Balch Hotel, which will also be open for tours at no cost. The Home Tour is Sunday October 3rd from 1 to 5 p.m. Open for viewing are the homes of Rob & Becky Carnahan, Jim Woods & Janet Stauffer, Paul & Dixie Schanno, John & Zipporah Dillon (two locations), Bob & Pat Davis and Dan Sanders & Nadine Gosson-Sanders. The architecture and interior designs of the homes reflect the eras and personal style of each home owner.

Where is Dufur? Dufur, Oregon is a very small rural town located 13 miles South of the The Dalles, Oregon. The town of Dufur was founded by Andrew J. Dufur, Jr., a successful "raiser of stock". The town received its post office in 1878 but the earliest records show church meetings in 1862. Dufur was a stopping point on the Oregon Trail for those travelling over land on the Barlow Trail instead of down the Columbia River. Wheat Harvest underway in Wasco County, Oregon

It's that time of year again. The summer heat has put the finishing touches on the wheatfields and wheat harvest has been underway in Wasco and neighboring counties for the last several weeks. Things got started a little later than usual this year due to the cold rainy spring, however the extra rain has produced an above-average crop.

With drought and wildfires in Russia causing them to ban exports for the rest of year and bad weather in Canada, there is a greater demand for U.S. wheat so prices are also above average. That is welcome news for local farmers and ranchers who have had a lot of ups and downs over the past several years. Wheat prices shot up in July as Russia, the world's #3 wheat exporter, saw one-fifth of their wheat crop destroyed by severe drought and raging wildfires. Canada, another major exporter of wheat, is also expecting low yields because of crops that were destroyed by heavy rains. Large portions of Oregon and Washington wheat are exported, most of it through Columbia River ports.

Last weekend marked the 40th anniversary of the Dufur Threshing Bee in Dufur, Oregon, one of the few events of its kind in the country. At the "Bee" visitors can watch horse-drawn antique harvesting equipment being used in the fields. This is the only threshing event that uses horse-drawn machinery and demonstrates each step of the process from cutting standing wheat to sewing up bags for shipping. The event was founded 40 years ago by Everett Metzentine and Bob DePriest. To mark this years anniversary the families of both men were honored as Grand Marshalls at the Saturday morning parade.

In the late 1800s, harvesting a wheat crop was a difficult process. It often took teams of 32 horses to move the harvesting equipment. Farmers hired harvest crews and worked long hours. Their wives fed the crews, usually spending their days in portable cook shacks preparing meals for as many as 30 men.

The Threshing Bee is held the second weekend in August and in addition to the horse-powered and other farming equipment, offers demonstrations in blacksmithing, wheelrighting, a schoolhouse other examples of early settlers way of life. There is also a tractor pull, a steak feed in the park and a breakfast at the Ramsey Grange Hall. Sunday features a classic car show in the Dufur Park.

Curtis Salgado at Music In The Park, The Dalles, Oregon

The weather was perfect Thursday evening, warm with just enough breeze. Curtis Salgado was singing the blues for this months Music In The Park concert at The Dalles City Park. He is without a doubt one of the finest blues harmonica players in the country. He was dressed warmly all in black but stressed it was more important to look cool than be comfortable!

Curtis Salgado was born in Everett, Washington and grew up in Eugene, Oregon listening to jazz. He became a part of the Northwest blues scene when it was developing in 1972, playing with many musicians over the years including Robert Cray, Muddy Waters, Steve Miller and The Doobie Brothers. In 1979, when John Belushi was in Eugene filming Animal House, Curtis met Belushi who became a great blues fan. That led Belushi and Dan Akroyd to base the now famous Blues Brothers act on Curtis and his music. In fact, the first Blues Brothers album was dedicated to Curtis.

It was a great evening of music and fun. The Music in the Park concerts are featured monthly during the summer. They are free however donations are accepted for the local food banks. The next concert is September 1st when the Stolen Sweets will perform.

Mid-Columbia Association of Realtors Annual Fundraiser A Success!

The 6th Annual Mid-Columbia Association of Realtors (MCAR) Annual Fundraiser was once again a big success. This year the event for Habitat For Humanity consisted entirely of a Silent Auction. Almost $6000 was raised to facilitate Habitat's ongoing projects in the Gorge and all funds raised stay in the Gorge. Last year's proceeds contributed to a septic system for the 17th house built in The Dalles area. Approximately $40,000 has been raised for Gorge area Habitat projects in the 6 years that MCAR has been holding the fundraiser.

The event was again held at Columbia River Properties/Auction Sales at 1400 Hwy 197 in The Dalles in conjunction with the Fort Dalles Rodeo Kickoff Party. Last year, The Fort Dalles Rodeo Association and Columbia River Properties generously offered MCAR their venue and supplied the food and beverages which allowed MCAR to contribute all the funds raised to Habitat For Humanity. The Rodeo Kickoff party is always a popular event so it was a great opportunity for the Fundraiser to take advantage of the exposure. The weather could not have been more perfect, 75 degrees and light winds compared to last week's 100+ temps and the previous day's 48 mph wind gusts. It really brought out the crowds, of course Cowboy's Catering and the Baldwin Saloon desserts along with Copa di Vino wines and cold beer may have had something to do with it as well!

While Fort Dalles Rodeo week is an annual event topped off by a large downtown parade, this year marks the first year the celebration was extended to a 10 day event encompassing Historic Dalles Days, Jammin' July, the annual downtown promotion, and several other local events and fundraisers. It all appears to have a been a great success as well.

Roundabout Dedication The Dalles, Oregon

It was 107 degrees last Thursday when the new Roundabout at the Eastern Gateway to The Dalles, Oregon was dedicated. I was there as an Ambassador for The Dalles Chamber of Commerce. U.S. Senator Ron Wyden and Congressman Greg Walden were on hand as well as local and state officials involved in the planning and construction of the project. (You'll notice I'm a little late with this post, The Dalles Chronicle's story came out last Friday(!) but we've been busy working on the annual MCAR fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity that was held on Tuesday - more on that in my next blog). Back to the Roundabout...the current project has been in the works about 10 years but traffic entering The Dalles from Exit 85 (or the "Boat Basin exit") had always found the area confusing and sometimes congested, especially when dealing with the switchback up Brewery Grade. A lot of different solutions were tried with varying degrees of success so the Roundabout plans were met with some skepticism.

Delayed due to funding issues, the Roundabout was finally partially financed by the Stimulus Bill and created about 50 local jobs, opening in May. There was still some confusion at first, and lots of Letters to the Editor and comments around town about the proper and courteous way to navigate the circle and deal with oncoming traffic but the overall feeling seems to be that its a pretty neat addition to The Dalles. It is appealing on its own but I've noticed Jeff Stewart, well-known local artist, out there in the heat adding a Mural to the East side to go along with all of the other great Murals in The Dalles. With the Sunshine Mill and Artisan Plaza up and running, this once boondoggle area is adding to the growth and charm of the East end of town.

Clock Tower Ales, The Dalles, Oregon

It was mid afternoon, just after the lunchtime rush and before the 4PM performance of local musician Victor Johnson when we stopped by Clock Tower Ales on Sunday. We were looking for a late lunch and decided to try one of the beer samplers along with our Caesar Salad and Grilled Roast Beef and Brie sandwich. Clock Tower Ales specializes in craft beers and you can sample 6 beers of your choice for $8.00. Choices range from Pilsner, IPAs and Blue Paw Ale to Hazel Nut Brown Nectar, Tree Hugger Porter, Guinness and many others. There are also wine and cider selections as well as non alcoholic beverages. The food menu is light pub fare featuring pizzas, salads, soups and "starters" such as dips and chips, hummus and a meat and cheese plate.

Clock Tower Ales opened earlier this year and has recently added outside seating in the form picnic tables on the front lawn of the historic building. Originally the second Wasco County Courthouse, built in 1881, the stately old brick building in the center of downtown The Dalles features the signature clock and tower that inspired the pub's name. For many years after it was vacated by the county, the building housed a funeral home as well as a meeting place for the Masonic Lodge. It is on the National Registry of Historic Places and is located at 311 Union Street in The Dalles. Hours are Wednesday-Sunday, 11AM-10PM (9pm Sunday). They have free wi-fi!

The Mid Columbia Association of Realtors (MCAR) will hold its 5th annual fundraiser for Habitat for Humanity in conjunction with other local events this year, creating a full week of activities during Fort Dalles Days Pro Rodeo in The Dalles, Oregon. The Silent Auction Fundraiser will once again be held as part of the Rodeo Kickoff Party at Auction Sales at 1400 Hwy 197, The Dalles, Oregon, on Tuesday July 13, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00pm.

There are a wide range of events planned for the combined celebrations this year. See Fort Dalles Days Rough and Wild for a Schedule of Events from block parties and fast draw competitions to food and fundraisers and of course the Rodeo!

So visit The Dalles July 8-18, 2010 as the formerly separate events of Historic The Dalles Days, Jammin' July and the Rodeo come together to anchor the festivites. Sunshine Mill and Artisan Plaza, The Dalles Oregon

This weekend marked the re-opening of the Sunshine Mill in The Dalles, Oregon in its new incarnation as the Sunshine Mill and Artisan Plaza.

The old Sunshine Mill towers over the Eastern gateway to The Dalles. Wheat was milled on the property for 130 years. Originally a four story wooden structure powered by steam, the mill burned around the turn of the 20th century. A new mill was constructed on the site, this one over 125 feet tall and powered by the White River Dam in Tygh Valley. The gravity flour mill equipment still exists in the buildings, powered by electric motors designed by Thomas Edison but the mill had been inactive for many years.

The idea for the Sunshine Mill and Aritsan Plaza has long been the dream (and brainchild) of James Martin, local entrepreneur and winemaker for Quenett and Silver Salmon Wineries. His plan is to develop the former mill into an artisan plaza with a destination hotel and boutique winery built inside the grain silos. "Our development team is creating a unique experience for artisans, chefs, wine and cheese makers, while rejuvenating this historic mill property in The Dalles Oregon. Part laboratory, part living room, always entertaining, while embracing the grace of the past with the strength of its exciting future. A think tank and testing ground for artists, vintners, chefs and entrepreneurs to develop and market their goods under one vision." He is off to a great start!

We've stopped by before in earlier stages when James was working on the fundraising aspect of the project but this Memorial Weekend the Tasting Room featuring Quenett Wines was open for business. The original features of the mill have been incorprated into the tasting room in every possible way. Also featured was James and Molli Martin's other exciting new venture, Copa di Vino - wine in its own cup - check this one out! Already widely in use in the Northwest at concert venues! Both are great additions to a historic town that is coming back into its glory days.

The Sunshine Mill is located at 901 E 2nd Street in The Dalles, just off Exit 85 right next to the City's newest feature - the Roundabout that opened for traffic just a few weeks ago.
