I belong to a group of real estate investors who don't think much of realtors even though a lot of them are realtors as well.
I recently read an article in their newsletter that I didn't feel showed realtors in a very good light. There were things like agents were greedy, unethical and bullies. Also, that we have a monopoly on the MLS which then makes us a necessary part of their plan. He tells investors to do their own COMPS and not take their (agents) word that it is a good deal, and that agents may tend to lie when they tell you that they presented your offer when in fact they hadn't and that is why it was rejected because no one ever saw it.
Now I took offense to this article and I sent in a rebuttal to be printed in the newsletter, however, I don't think it will be printed because I got an email from the current President of the group (who is a broker) and gave me all these statistics of how stupid most agents are.
These are his figures to which he never gave me any reference to back them up:
80% of licensed agents only have a high school education or ged
80% are only part-time and make less than $10,000 in commissions per year (per GLAR)
80% or more of agents, suck at ther job because they don't do enough volume to be any good
I have also been approached to put a listing on the MLS for an investor for $500 and he would do the leg work. Now it's my understanding that you still share that money with your broker, you are the listing agent so you could be held responsible for anything they do wrong and yes, you'd like to make some money just like them. That's what we all went to school for and continue to take classes as needed, took the test and paid all the fees and continue to pay fees for the right to be a realtor.
Just like in any profession there are some slackers and unethical people, but to lump all real estate agents into this category was very offensive to me. How about you?
