jay carden: Large Living Room - 10/12/12 04:54 AM
Large Living Room

Here are my tips for giving the illusion of a large living room:
Mirrors. Mirrors have always been known to help a room look large.  Mirrors reflect the light that comes into the room and "bounces" the light around the room. Natural Light. Natural light is always the best when trying to achieve a large living room illusion, because it highlights everything in the room and travels easily.  Lamps can not provide highlights in a room, because the light is often too soft and only stays within the area of the lamp. Hardwood Flooring or Tile. Hardwood flooring … (2 comments)

Fall is pretty much already here and winter is on its way, so to prepare for the season I have listed below a fall and winter home maintenance checklist.  It is important to make sure you keep up with these items every fall and winter to insure your home is in good condition.

Here is your fall and winter home maintenance checklist.
Clean Your Gutters.  Backed up gutters can cause no water drainage.  This is can be a problem if you live in an area that gets a lot of rain … (0 comments)

Cozy Up Your Living Room

I don't know about where you are, but it is definitely winter here in Colorado Springs.  The cold is here a little early, but it has inspired me to help you cozy up your living room.  When I say, "cozy up", I mean decorate your living room so it is inviting and you can enjoy the warmth inside your home.  There is nothing better than curling up on your sofa or over stuffed chair and enjoying a movie or good book with a hot mug of tea, cider or coco.  I think that is one … (0 comments)

Compact Living and Design Efficiency

Compact living and design efficiency, I believe, truly started in Asia.  Since most cities across Asia are so small, minimizing space through compact living and design efficiency is very much needed.  So, what does the future look like for compact living and design efficiency?  I believe, in the United States, compact living is growing.  Here, it is called "Urbanization".  I have added a video below that shows you the wonders and benefits of compact living and design efficiency.  Enjoy!

jay carden: DIY: Vintage Paper Art - 09/21/12 06:49 AM
Hello Everyone!  Happy Friday!
My favorite pass time is making art with vintage paper.  I LOVE it!  It adds a certain quality of charm to the art.  Vintage charm, of course!  I've compiled a few different ways you can make your own vintage paper art.  First, there are different types of paper you can use for vintage art.  The first one and one of my favorites, is old sheet music.

This particular piece of art has various pieces of sheet music decoupaged onto a canvas.

Next, is making art with newspaper.
This piece shows that you can paint or do ink work on newspaper. … (6 comments)

jay carden: What Does Your Entryway Say About You? - 09/19/12 03:51 AM
Here is a fun fact... Brought to you by: Better Homes & Gardens.
"A new front door instantly enhances your home's appearance, and what's more, it can greatly increase resale value. A recent study by door manufacturer Therma-Tru found that upgrading the front door of a house increased the perceived value of a $190,000 home by almost $8,000. Estimates for new entry doors start around $2,500, so you could actually make back triple the money you spend".
Of course, those numbers aren't going to be the same everywhere, but it gives you an idea of what curb appeal can really do … (6 comments)

jay carden: Highlight of My Weekend: The Barcelona Chair! - 09/11/12 02:58 AM
Good Morning Everyone!I hope everyone's weekend was great! As you can tell, the highlight of my weekend was seeing a Barcelona chair up close and personal.  I was SO excited, I kind of "nerded out" for a minute.  I even got to sit in it!  Everyone around me must have thought I was crazy, but I don't care!  The Barcelona chair is one of my favorite chairs in the whole world!
I remember, thinking back to my days in design school, seeing and drooling over a piece of art known as the Barcelona chair in a small, but thick book called 1,000 Chairs.

jay carden: This is for all the history buffs out there! - 08/31/12 06:04 AM

The year is 1789.  The place is Versailles in France.  Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette gaze out of their ornamental windows.  France is in financial crisis and the French people are in chaos.  France wants King Louis  and Marie Antoinette to leave their reign and leave the palace.  With people rallying outside the windows of Versailles, Louis and Marie think back to when they first lived within the intricate walls of the palace.
The Rococo era was ending and a new one beginning.  The reign of King Louis XVI started in 1774 and so did the Neoclassical period.  The … (1 comments)
