It's hard to believe that it's already that time of year. It's time for any child who will be 5 by Aug. 31st to register for kindergarten for the 2011 - 2012 school year. March 14 - 18 go to your child's school with proof of residency, your child's birth certificate and shot records. If you are unsure which elementary school will be yours, contact the Hood River County School District.
Also, don't forget... Spring Break is March 21st - 25th.

Another Basketball Season Comes to an End
The last game of the Hood River County Youth Basketball League (boys, grades 3 to 6) was played today. We are so proud of how hard these young men worked all season and we're amazed at how much they've grown and improved. Most of the teams were small so for some games every child had to play the entire game. Today, our son's team, Parkdale, lost to Hood River, but they fought valiantly to the end.

Another Victim of the Economy
Last night we got the sad news that the school board agreed to back Hood River County School District Superintendant's recommendation to close Pine Grove Elementary School. The closure comes after the announcement several weeks ago that the school district budget came up $3.5 million short. For a little school district, that's huge.
Pine Grove is the smallest of the elementary schools in the district, while Mid-Valley Elementary school is currently not filled to capacity. Pine Grove students will be moved to Mid-Valley next September. While the closure is not written in stone yet, the recommendation makes … (9 comments)

With the weather cold and dreary, with snow on the way, now is a perfect time to hit Hood River's indoor pool. The Hood River Aquatic Center offers lots of "Open Swim" times, daily, as well as additional "Lap" time, swimming lessons, team practice and even kyaking practice time. The main pool is huge and warm, while a smaller, "Therapy" pool is more shallow and even warmer. For the really little ones, there's even a wading pool with fountains. The WyEast Middle School Wrestling team continued their season this afternoon, facing Estacada at WyEast. WyEast put up a good fight, but lost the meet in the end. We're still so proud of all these young men who truly give it their all. It's a rebuilding year, so we look forward to the team gaining experience and becoming truly formidable in the next year or two. It's such a great program and the coaches are amazing.

Of course, no photo can do justice to downtown Hood River, but below is my attempt. The streets are lined with charming cafes and shops, inviting one to linger, especially on a nice, sunny day. I want to be a tourist visiting here. I want to stay in a charming bed and breakfast, walk to a sidewalk cafe for breakfast, watch kiteboards rise over the great Columbia River. Then I'd shop. It was a hot day last summer that we were in The Dalles (30 minutes from home), running errands, making sales calls and touring neighborhoods. We had our boys with us (ages 9 and 11) and they were getting bored and restless, when Mel suddenly said he had happened upon a park the other day, not far from where we were. So we drove up the hill and before we knew it, Sorosis Park lay before us.

We're still new enough to the region that we often find ourselves stumbling upon great spots, incredible views and touching tributes. One such place is the Veteran's Memorial at Sorosis Park, 350 E. Scenic Drive, The Dalles.
 

It is a very touching memorial for Wasco County veterans who have participated in the country's wars. Kermit is a sweet male, Chihuahua/Dachshund mix, approx. 3 years old and he's looking for his forever home. Kermit is currently being offered through the Hood River Adopt-A-Dog program at the Hukari Animal Shelter in Hood River, Oregon.

The Hood River Aquatic Center is one of our family's favorite "hang outs". We often swim on Saturdays and spent A LOT of last summer there, as both our boys joined the Hood River Valley Swim Team. On July 1, 2010, the Hood River County Libary was closed indefinately when a ballot measure to fund the library failed. But in true Hood River style, the community banded together and got a new measure placed on the November, 2010 ballot and it passed. Of course, the measure provides funds from property taxes, which won't be available until November, 2011. Our stalwart community wasn't about to let that little detail hinder it! Youth Middle School Wrestling: The Columbia Gorge and Beyond
Today brought our son Sam's first wrestling match of the season. Sam's on the Wy'East Middle School's Wrestling team and today's meet was at The Dalles Middle School.  Sam lost both of his matches but worked hard, something he can be proud of. I'm not sure how many towns were represented there, but the gym was packed with kids from all over the Columbia Gorge and as far away as Hermiston. Sam's team practices 3:30 to 5:30, five days a week, with two to three meets a week. The picture to the right is warm-ups … (0 comments)
