blogging: Happy New Year 2012: Blogging is so 2006 - 01/02/12 12:53 PM
Happy New Year 2012

Happy New Year!  Weren't you glad that there are so many opportunities in the real estate industry to engage with consumers in 2011?  As 2011 was ending I was thinking about how things have changed over the years and how things have stayed the same in many ways.
OK I started thinking about it in August or September 2011.... so perhaps that really was NOT the end of 2011...
Blogging is so 2006
There are now Facebook pages and profiles, Twitter and Google+ so who needs "a blog" to "blog?"  You can engage with consumers on … (15 comments)

blogging: Reading useless blog posts: Move along... - 12/06/11 08:29 AM
When you find yourself reading "useless blog posts" move along and read something else.

Usefull?  Useless you decide as the reader, just like anyone else reading blog posts.
If the content you are reading does not satisfy, move along and read something else. There is plenty to read.  There is a lot to read on ActiveRain outside ActiveRain.....  Don't like reading Localism posts?  Don't.  It is not going to bother the writer.  The writer is not talking about ice cream, neighborhoods or the local economy for your benefit.  They are talking to the locals. Or people looking to become locals, … (68 comments)

blogging: are non-real estate articles hurting Activerain? - 08/26/11 11:47 AM
This is more of a Re-Butt than a Re-Blog...
Sorry Bryan but I think this is one of the silliest ideas I've read in a long time.  Blogging 101?  Boring 101.
Local content that is not real estate would not get points?
I think hyper local content is very important to the traffic on ActiveRain.
Would Back to School content get points in Bryan's plan?  Not bonus points but just plain old worthless ActiveRain points?  Are football schedules real estate?  Are bus schedules real estate?  Back to school schedules?
I think showing up in Google for a school name is a … (19 comments)

blogging: Outside Blogs.... one of mine is kicking my WordPress blog's butt - 08/06/11 09:48 AM

WordPress blogs are the best....
DiscoverColumbusOh.com is an ActiveRain Outside blog.  It is my oldest ActiveRain Outside Blog.
DiscoverColumbusOH.com an ActiveRain Outside Blog had more traffic yesterday than my WordPress blog. I noticed another day earlier in the week that my Columbus Ohio real estate blog on ActiveRain (DiscoverColumbusOH.com) had more traffic than my WordPress blog.  That is out of the ordinary.
Is there something wrong with my WordPress.org blog?  I don't think so.
A lot of the traffic on my Columbus real estate blog (my Outside Blog on ActiveRain)  is on posts from 2006 (before the WordPress.org blog … (60 comments)

blogging: ActiveRain is for dummies? Really? - 07/22/11 04:50 PM
Is the ActiveRain  of the future for dummies?
Loyalty? in the comments on  Will Google+ replace ActiveRain?  member after member declared their loyalty to ActiveRain...
Oh, OK she did not literally say "ActiveRain is for Dummies"  or that "ActiveRain will be for Dummies when Google+ replaces it for smarter Realtors"  or even  "only Dummies will stick around ActiveRain"   in answer to the question "Could you see Google+ replacing Active Rain for Realtors?"

... an ActiveRain member wrote: "only to those who do not understand how SEO works will stick around for the comradery."
Here's a snippet of part of … (8 comments)

blogging: Disclose Affiliate Links...endorsements - 06/11/11 09:09 AM
disclose when you use affiliate links in a post
Disclosure of affiliations is something that I wonder about in the WordPress group on ActiveRain. One of the most interesting to me comments on the Joe and Joe discussion about article marketing / spinning  this week comes from Jay Thompson on Joe #1's post encouraging the use of a service.
Jay Thompson's comment in it's entirety #
"PS: IMO, it would be prudent to disclose when you use affiliate links in a post. Most experts feel the FTC guidelines released in Oct 2009 apply to affiliate links, particulalry in a "review" or … (8 comments)

blogging: ActiveRain works if you work it.... - 04/12/11 09:40 AM
ActiveRain works if you work it... what's the point?
This post put me over a million ActiveRain points yesterday.
5 reasons to join ActiveRain... Price Break ... Wait there is more YOU could win an iPad
Yes it is awful late in the game to start inviting people for the iPad...
Too late to pull it off?  We'll know more midnight on Friday.  I BELIEVE in inviting people to ActiveRain.
Thanks for all the hard work
259,750 of my points are from inviting other members.  A lot of the people I invited never posted.  A lot of members I … (35 comments)

blogging: Stealing is good? "How to steal like an artist" - 04/02/11 10:43 AM

We hear over and over on ActiveRain that stealing is bad...  Just don't do it.  It's in the Guidelines.  We hear it elsewhere too.   "Thou shalt not steal"
The post "How to steal like an artist...." from Austin Kleon is hot.  It's been tweeted a mere 3733  times to date.  It's been "Liked" 222K +/ -  times on Facebook... and counting of course.
"How to steal like an artist"  is ALL the rage on the Internet, Twitter, my Google Reader and in my mailbox this dreary Saturday morning...  The full title of Kleon's post is "How to steal like an … (8 comments)

blogging: Does this blog make my backside look big? - 02/12/11 09:58 AM
Did the title make you look? "Does this blog make my backside look big?"
Is today's Abe Lincoln's Birthday?
In a real estate class a few weeks ago the instructor mentioned this GEICO commercial.   The class was about minimizing risk.
Risky behavior by Honest Abe?

Does this blog make my backside look big? Risky blogging behavior. Some advice for those new to real estate blogging / social media. Yes, the mike is on. If you are not a RainMaker, comments on RainMakers posts can be a great place to be. There is a built-in link to your … (12 comments)

blogging: WordCamp - 10/11/10 11:15 AM
Have you been to WordCamp? With all the interest of ActiveRain members about WordPress I wanted to mention WordCamp.
Is there a WordCamp in your area?  WordCamp Central
This weekend New York or Richmond VA,  the following weekend Las Vegas.  Other exotic international locations... coming up.
WordCamp is for both WordPress.com and WordPress.org or at least the first WordCamp Columbus that I attended was both.  Lorelle on WordPress who is WordPress.com was there in 2009.  So was @JaneforShort I think she is .org but  I could be wrong.
WordCamp Columbus 2010 was less star filled but I really got a lot … (10 comments)

blogging: Blogging 101 - Don't be a user - 10/09/10 09:37 AM
Blogging 101 - Don't be a user
Who do you trust for advice about copyright?  Lenn Harley of course.
Who do you trust about "using" another person's photos that are licensed with a Creative Commons license? Jeff Turner! - Creative Commons license
A week or so ago Bob Haywood wrote: Blogging 101 - Using Outside Material Properly.  It got featured. His follow up post  "Boo Hooing"  about comments on the post got featured too. Bob boo hoo'd about hateful comments, long comments... John Novak's comment.
I wrote the LONG comment! Bob's example of how to use a Creative Commons … (29 comments)

blogging: Heroic efforts - the ActiveRain member who donated a kidney - 07/18/10 10:31 AM
Looking for a hero?  The member who donated a kidney to ActiveRain.
No ActiveRain has never been on dialysis.  ActiveRain never needed a kidney... No one member has had to make that kind of sacrifice for ActiveRain. Mike Jaquish made my day with this comment on the blog of a founding ActiveRain member:
"I just don't see a huge issue, but I never donated a kidney to AR, or tied myself to the community otherwise."
Mike's comment is on one of the requisite "Should I stay or should I go-o " posts from inactive members when they reclaimed their grandfather … (3 comments)

blogging: Viral content - Don't get your undies in a bundle - 07/07/10 08:00 AM
Viral content - Don't get your undies in a bundle...  What does "undies in a bundle"  even mean?
I believe William James Walton Sr. used "undies in a bundle"  in a comment on Jeff Corbett's post ...the post  that the title  has been changed... because it was deemed to be hate speech by ActiveRain... you remember the post that a lot  of  the ladies of ActiveRain's  "undies in a bundle."
Urban Dictionary on undies in a bundle
Discussion on ActiveRain:
"I saw something (online.) I don't know what it is.  I won't show it to you.  Let's discuss if it … (7 comments)

blogging: Blogging to Attract Friends, Followers and Connections to Your Business - 07/03/10 11:40 AM
Blogging...
The chapter on blogging in the ebook 'Soci@l: Attract Friends, Followers and Connections to Your Business'  I have been blogging since 2005 so I know it all... Right?
WRONG!!
The chapter on blogging is great... and it is an ActiveRain Family Reunion.
There's Brad Andersohn, Virginia Hepp... and others.  Bob Stewart wrote the chapter on blogging?  Or Co-Wrote the chapter on blogging with Ben Kinney?   Big ActiveRain connection.   Reading a review of Soci@l where someone mentioned Bob Stewart I thought "Gee I must have missed that"  so I have gone back and reread the chapter on blogging.
I hate … (10 comments)

blogging: Clipmarks curating content onto your blog - 03/29/10 07:53 AM
Clipmarks curating content onto your blog
Clipmarks works on Typepad... Blogger, Movable type... Vox... and WordPress blogs

Clipmarks works on lots of blogs.  I was getting ready to go  to my open house yesterday when I saw another real estate agent share a Columbus Dispatch article about Central Ohio house values on his Blogger blog.  He used Clipmarks to share it with his blog readers.   I saw him tweet a link to his post on his blog.
So I joined Clipmarks...
Clipmarks curating content - Clip-to-Blog
The concept of curating content... confuses me to begin with.  Here on ActiveRain … (10 comments)

blogging: Real Living Flag... sharing - 03/05/10 10:16 AM
Real Living Flag... sharing MY photo

I am not a big photographer... I am not going to do a photo blog... well I do have a Posterous blog with some photos but I am not a photoblogger.  I admire Teresa Boardman, Kristal Kraft and other real estate people  who are great photographers.
I love good photos.
I am very visual.
When it comes to Flickr I am more of a consumer than a producer.  I believe this is the first photo I am sharing with a Creative Commons license.  Not that I was hoarding my photos.  The default is … (17 comments)

blogging: Color caught red handed - 01/16/10 10:21 AM

Color caught red handed "as mentioned above."  As mentioned above in the title? I said "caught red handed." Want to know what is original content on ActiveRain? and what's not? Sometimes "as mentioned above" is a clue to content that is not original.
There was a big brouhaha over ActiveRain members blog content being scraped by a blog-site developer yesterday. While there were at least two posts about,  I am not going to give links since they were members only posts. I can email you the links via ActiveRain if you require them.  Lotsa drama!  Lots of ActiveRain … (25 comments)

blogging: Official Roster and Schedule for the Virtual Real Estate BarCamp: Jan 4th from 9am PST - 4pm PST - 01/04/10 08:00 AM

It is today.  Here is the schedule and instructions.
I wish I could go to all the sessions.  I have four of the seven sessions narrowed down to two choices, that's progress.  I am kind of that way with a menu too.
One thing I did last time that helped me was use my Desktop to watch the presentation, be in in the chatroom and watch Twitter. At the same time I used my netbook to be on MY LinkedIn when Mike Mueller was talking about LinkedIn, on My Posterous.com when Brad Carrol was talking about Posterous.com
I suppose you … (4 comments)

blogging: The ActiveRain heresy - 11/07/09 09:01 AM
The ActiveRain heresy...
Do you know what heresy is?
I believe  Joan of Arc and  Galileo were officially heretics to the big "ism" in their age.  Joan got burned at the stake for it...
ActiveRainism - dogma?
How to write this without going into religion, dogma... I am a fan of ActiveRain. I don't think I practice ActiveRainism but some might...  EDIT think I do. I think ActiveRain is one good way (place?)  for the real estate industry to learn about social media, the real estate industry, blogging, technology.
I have been an ActiveRain member since 2006. I have seen … (59 comments)

blogging: Trick or Treat Traffic - raising the dead - 10/30/09 08:49 AM
Trick or Treat Traffic - I have a Zombie blog...
Did you put up anything special for Halloween on your ActiveRain (or other) blog?  Are you getting  traffic from it? Not traffic from other members stopping by to say "great post thanks for sharing"  but traffic from people in your community?
Localism Trick or Treat Traffic - talking to the locals
Most of our Central Ohio communities had Trick or Treat last night.   Yes, I know it was NOT Halloween... but we had Beggars Night last night. Some communities have their Trick or Treat on Saturday so I will still … (9 comments)
