home maintenance: Roof leak? - 03/22/12 07:41 AM
Roof leaks don't only happen in old homes.
Jay Markanich and Mighty Mo (his trusty thermal imaging camera) live and work in northern Virginia but we have home inspectors in central Ohio who use this technology.  I heard recently that one of my favorite inspectors uses this technology now.   No wonder he is in so much demand.
Thanks to Jay for allowing his post originally titled  "Famous Last Words - "But I Caulked It!"  to be Re-Blogged.

home maintenance: Space Heater Saturday - December 2011 - 12/03/11 03:51 PM
Today December 3, 2011 is Space Heater Saturday
I should have posted a Furnace Filter Friday post here yesterday, a reminder to change your furnace filter regularly.  I try to remember to post a reminder at the beginning of each month about this home maintenance reminder.
I knew I needed to do a Furnace Filter Friday post since it was the first Friday of the month. I ran out of day and energy, so today is Space Heater Saturday on this site.

It was First Friday in Worthington last night.  We had both of our front doors, at Real Living HER open … (2 comments)

home maintenance: Black Friday, No Returns? Return Ducts that is... - 11/25/11 11:02 AM
Black Friday, No Returns?
It's Friday...  Black Friday to be exact. I usually try to find a home heating or home cooling post from a home inspector each Friday.
No Returns?  Return Ducts that is...
James a home inspector in CT describes the problem of No Returns in HVAC.   Thanks to James for allowing his post about return ducts to be Re-Blogged.

As we approach the holiday season, the words “no returns” can cause the holiday shopper more than a bit of trepidation. At this time of year, the … (0 comments)

home maintenance: 7 Easy Steps to an Energy Efficient Home - 11/18/11 08:48 AM
Furnace Friday - 7 Easy Steps to an Energy Efficient Home - home maintenance and home improvement ideas!
It's Friday... and it's cold in Central Ohio.  It got down almost to 20° last night in northern Franklin County from what I saw on the thermometer when I let the dog out in the wee hours of the night.
Every Friday is furnace Friday on Discover Columbus OH, I try to find something about furnaces to share, or HVAC. This week let me share 7 Steps to an Engergy Efficient Home, a Re-Blog from David Artigliere, a home inspector.  Don't look but I … (4 comments)

home maintenance: A roofing experiment: zinc strips on a roof - 11/08/11 10:58 AM
I love experiments.   Reuben Saltzman, a Minneapolis MN home inspector is doing "A semi-long term experiment: zinc strips on a moss covered roof"
Have you run into moss on your roof?  I would think it would be more common in MN and cooler northern states in the Great Lakes area  than in Ohio but I have seen it here on homes with a lot of tree cover.  We certainly get enough rain...    Visit home inspectors in the Pacific Northwest's websites if you want to see moss covered roofs.
I remember moss on an Old Worthington roof, and I have … (6 comments)

home maintenance: Furnace Filter: Sucking Wind - 11/04/11 08:48 PM
It's nearly 9:00  PM EDT on Friday, November 4, 2011... the first Friday of November.  I needed to post a Furnace Filter Friday post at some point today...  Wouldn't you think being November I'd find a good furnace post from a home inspector in November? Nope James in CT wrote about air conditioning this week.  The East Coast was hit by that  freaky "Nor’easter" last weekend...
The point of Furnace Filter Friday is just to remind you to change your furnace filter regularly.  Monthly?  That's between you and your furnace / air conditioning.  Pay attention to what James finds out about the furnace filter in this … (3 comments)

home maintenance: Nest Learning Thermostat - 10/28/11 08:43 AM
Furnace Friday: Nest Learning Thermostat
How does "Thermostat Thursday" sound?  Perhaps I should have Re-Blogged Niki Parekh's post "Replace Your Thermostat with Nest Learning Thermostat"  on Thursday, rather than today Friday.  I try to share a furnace post here every Friday. I usually Re-Blog a home inspector. The first Friday of the month is Furnace Filter Friday on this site, a reminder to change your filter regularly.  Hint next Friday is Furnace Filter Friday on this site.
I saw the news that Tony Fadell announced Nest Labs which will produce the Nest Learning Thermostat on Niki's blog first. Niki is the … (4 comments)

home maintenance: Fall/Winter Seasonal Chores List.... - 10/14/11 05:36 PM
We've had a warm fall so far...  but colder weather is on it's way.
Looking for a furnace post to share with readers today I came across home  inspector,  Jay Markanich's post originally titled:  Jay's School of Inspectology - Fall/Winter Seasonal Chores List
A number of the items on Jay's  Fall / Winter Seasonal Chores List have to do with furnaces and heating and even those that don't need to be done before winter sets in, in Central Ohio.

home maintenance: Furnace Filter Friday... somewhere - 10/08/11 02:54 AM
It is still Furnace Filter Friday somewhere out in the Pacific...  it is still Friday, October 7, 2011 in California, barely.  Ooops October Furnace Filter Friday ended nearly three hours ago in Columbus.
Every first Friday of the month for over a year this site has reminded people to change their furnace filters regularly.  I think this is the first time I have totally missed the reminder on the first Friday of the month. I try to find something about furnaces or HVAC each Friday to stay in the swing.  I forgot last Friday to post something about furnaces / hvac.

home maintenance: Home Maintenance Monday... - 10/04/11 05:49 PM
Home Maintenance Monday...  well it would have been if it was not Tuesday.
Space Heater Sunday...
Space Heater Saturday
I usually posts a Furnace Friday post on DiscoverColumbusOH.com but I missed on Friday, September 30, 2011.  I realized Saturday that it was Space Heater Saturday because I missed posting a furnace post on Friday...
I believe I have only forgot to post a furnace or HVAC post one other Friday in over a year and I think it was about safety of space heaters.  I started to write a post Saturday and did not and started to write on Sunday and … (0 comments)

Thanks to Richard Acree a Nashville TN home inspector for allowing his post to be Re-Blogged.

home maintenance: HVAC Tape is better than Duct Tape? - 09/16/11 06:06 PM
HVAC tape is better than duct tape?
Do we call it HVAC tape here? or foil tape?  Or something else?  I'll look next time I am in Lowes or Home Depot.   Stephanie in Texas is talking about using HVAC tape rather than duct tape in her post originally titled "Hey Steph, Why Did You Need HVAC Tape?"
She demonstrates taping up the furnace (HVAC unit) in her home.  She recommends having someone do it for you rather than DIY.

home maintenance: September in Columbus: it's going to be 96° - 09/02/11 09:32 AM
It's September 2011 in Columbus Ohio and today's forecast is 96° or 97°*
It's Friday September 2, 2011, the first Friday of the month and the weather forecast is HOT.
The first Friday of every month is Furnace Filter Friday on this site.  Furnace Filter Friday is just a reminder to change your furnace filter regularly.  If monthly is your regular...  change it now.
It's your call...

home maintenance: Furnace Filter Friday: The Dirt On Expensive Furnace Filters - 08/05/11 11:42 AM
It's the first Friday in August so that means it's Furnace Filter Friday on this site.
Thanks to Reuben Saltzman in Minnealpolis Minnesota for allowing his post, "The Dirt on Expensive Furnace Filters" to be Re-Blogged.
I could be wrong but I believe the first Furnace Friday post was a year ago, I did not realize it was Furnace Filter Friday yet, at some point I realized unless I did a post every Friday about furnaces I would be writing the post reminding home owners to change their furnace filter about Tuesday or Wednesday of the following week.  Every Friday is … (6 comments)

home maintenance: Home Inspections: Bats In the Furnace - 07/29/11 07:04 AM
Home inspections are an important part of the home buying process.  I have never heard of it before but bats in the furnace is probably more common in the mid-west than alligator in furnace  (and that was in Michigan.) Either bats or alligators would be grounds for Scary Furnace Friday for me though.

home maintenance: Furnace Filter Friday - July 2011 - 07/01/11 11:20 AM
It's Furnace Filter Friday because it is the first Friday of the month. In the video Open House: Energy Saving Tips... it looks like they are someplace warmer than Central Ohio. Or warmer year round. I think we have warm weather in our holiday weekend forecast. In the video he's on a step ladder, most Central Ohio furnaces are in the basement. Or sometimes Central Ohio furnaces are in a utility room or a closet within the living space if the home does not have a basement. Very seldom do Central Ohioans have to climb a ladder to check out their … (4 comments)

home maintenance: Ironing - 06/24/11 07:30 AM

It's Friday... so I needed a furnace or air conditioning post for my blog about Columbus Ohio real estate.   Thanks to CT home inspector, James Quarello for a post about drafting problems and scorch marks and what they mean.
We typically do not have "boilers" in residential heating in Central Ohio but our typical gas forced air furnaces rely on proper drafting of exhaust gases as well.
Next Friday, Friday July 1, 2011 is furnace filter Friday.
