metro parks: Scioto Audubon Metro Park - 08/31/09 07:21 AM

Maureen McCabe Scioto Audubon Metro Park is unique because it is just a mile south of downtown Columbus. We went to see the newest Columbus Metro Park on Sunday August 30, 2009.

View Larger Map The Scioto Audubon Metro Park and the Grange Audubon Center is right on the Scioto river, west of the Brewery District and German Village. A point of reference for some although I am not showing it in the photos here? The Columbus Police Department Impound Lot is at 400 W. Whittier Street, or actually the facility on the Whittier Peninsula is the City's Parking Violation … (0 comments)

metro parks: Columbus Metro Parks - Highbanks - 09/27/08 05:31 AM

Highbanks is now one of my favorite parks in Central Ohio. Located in Delaware County Highbanks Metro Park is part of what is now called "Metro Parks" but was originally and pretty recently known as the Columbus and Franklin County Metropolitan Park District.
The Metro Parks site says:
"Established in 1945, Columbus and Franklin County Metropolitan Park District "Metro Parks" features 15 outstanding natural area parks and protects more than 23,500 acres of land and water in seven Central Ohio counties."

metro parks: Ohio Fall Color Updates - 09/24/08 06:01 AM

Did you know we have over 100 trees in Ohio... 100 varieties... or species.
Ohio Department of Natural Resources - Fall Color Report
The first color report of 2008 is up. We in Central Ohio are predicted to be peak color in mid October. It says of most of the nearby State Parks "changing." I just noticed that it was not "green" walking and driving around Central Ohio within the last couple of days. There are tinges of color.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources website says now:

A walk in Highbanks Metro Park in Central Ohio to be exact.

I live and work closer to Highbanks Metro Park than any other Metro Park. Highbanks was probably the first Metro Park I ever visited in Central Ohio. I remember an office party / meeting event at Highbanks Metro Park in the early 90's. I remember cross country skiing with a friend in 1992 or 1993 at Highbanks Metro Park. Columbus Ohio made a list of top cities for single adults, "How does your city rank for singles?"
Forbes.com says of the methodology and rankings of the US cities:
"We looked at 40 of the largest urbanized areas in the country and judged them on culture, nightlife, job growth, the cost of living alone, online dating, the number of other singles and that ever-elusive quality, cool."
Columbus ranked 19 out of 40 cities for singles but Columbus was the 40th of those cities in "coolness"

metro parks: Westerville garden's got bugs - 08/29/07 05:54 AM

Big Bugs... is at Inniswoods Metro Gardens through October 14, 2007.
The bugs are the work of artist David Rogers.
Inniswood Metro Gardens is part of the Metroparks.
There's a slideshow with some of the other bug sculptures and lots of flowers on my other blog, ColumbusBestBlog.com. There are not photos of all Rogers' bugs there you need to go see them yourselves at Innsiwood Metro Gardens, the photos don't do the sculptures or the flowers justice.
Above is one of three large ants. There's ladybugs (which are not bugs and aren't all ladies either... 'Big Bugs' is educational even if you are older) a great spider, … (2 comments)
