worthington historical society: Worthington ... on this day in history - August 10, 1803 - 08/12/10 03:26 PM
August 10, 1803 the Scioto Company voted to name the town in Ohio "Worthington" after Thomas Worthington, one of Ohio's two first senators.

The Timeline on the Worthington Memory site tells me so.   Timeline of Worthington History
"1803 August 10" also according to the timeline the Scioto Company voted to fund the first library in Worthington on that date as well!  I have a note that says August 11 (but I do not know the year) Orange Johnson came to Worthington.  Not sure if that is on the Timeline of Worthington History too and I am just not seeing … (0 comments)

worthington historical society: Worthington, Ohio - July 10, 1919 - 07/10/10 06:36 AM
Worthington,  Ohio  -  July 10, 1919  Worthington history...
On the Worthington Memory Timeline 1919 July 10   - Worthington
"Dr. George T. Harding II purchases the Joyce family summer home east of the village and begins to establish the Harding psychiatric hospital."
An earlier  date  in 1916 the Worthington Memory Timeline -   Columbus and Central Ohio. "Dr. George T. Harding opens a rest home for women on E. 18th Ave., the forerunner of Harding Hospital."
Dr. George T. Harding II was President Warren G. Harding's brother...
Worthington Memory has some great old photos of Harding Hospital, the … (2 comments)

worthington historical society: When Worthington's W. Wilson Bridge Rd. moved - 12/08/09 05:31 AM
Worthington's  W. Wilson Bridge Rd. moved?
"1967 I-270 and Rt 23 interchange, looking north" Clicking on the photo will take you to the photo on Flickr. 1967-xx-xx I-270 and Rt 23 interchange, looking north
Wilson Bridge Road is the two squares south of the 270 interchange.  Route 23 (High Street)  runs straight down the middle.
W. Wilson Bridge Rd. was moved south?   In reading 'Worthington Neighborhoods' when it came to reading the chapters about the Worthington Estates and Olentangy Hills neighborhoods and the resistance of residents to shopping malls  I understood that W. Wilson Bridge Rd is not exactly where it … (0 comments)

worthington historical society: 'Worthington Neighborhoods' - 09/12/09 07:19 AM
I am reading a book...
I am reading a real honest to goodness print on paper book.  I used to be a big book reader but I have not really read books in years.  The title of the book , 'Worthington Neighborhoods'  gives away that it is not a novel.  The slim paperback was written by Jennie McCormick.
I bought the book at the Old Rectory, the historic property at 50 W. New England Avenue, the corner of New England and Oxford, The Doll Museum.
Some of what I have read so far is nothing new to me.  Some I knew … (3 comments)

worthington historical society: Worthington Ohio this day in history - 06/18/09 07:11 AM
According to the Worthington.org site on this day in Worthington Ohio:
"It is difficult to imagine the peaceful village of Worthington near the battlefront of a war with a foreign power, but some 175 years ago that was very much the situation. This frontier settlement was less than ten years old when U.S. and British trade disputes led Congress to declare war June 18, 1812"
Time goes on the Worthington Historical Society obviously penned that in 1987....
I had to look up what the War of 1812 was about.... who was fighting who for what.   I must have learned in … (4 comments)

worthington historical society: Worthington's Davis Estate - 05/16/09 06:07 AM
I believe I have always said "Davis Estates" rather than "Estate."
I remember an agent listing a house in Davis Estate (or is it Davis Estates?) as Colonial Hills West back in the 1990's.

The Neighborhoods list on City of Worthington website  "About"  page calls the neighborhood "Davis Estate" and lists the year as 1926.  That must be the year the Davis Estate neighborhood was platted.  The houses in the neighborhood are almost all from the 1940's  I believe. A few were built in the 1950's.  The Worthington information was compiled for a book … (1 comments)

worthington historical society: Worthington's Ancient History - 04/03/09 06:58 AM

Worthington History
Worthington has more history than most Columbus suburbs or celebrates that history more than other Cental Ohio communities.  The history in the area goes back further than 1803 when settlers from Massachusetts and Connecticut settled the land east of the Olentangy River and named the village "Worthington."
Ancient History
The City of Worthington's website calls the Jeffers Mound west of the river,  "Worthington's Oldest Manmade Structure." The ancient Indian Earthworks are from the Hopewell culture. The mound was part of larger ancient earthworks.
According to the City of Worthington website:
"The earthworks are believed to have been built … (12 comments)

worthington historical society: Worthington - A New England Village in Central Ohio - 07/17/08 04:04 PM

Worthington Ohio is a transplanted New England village, settled by people from Connecticut and Massachusetts.  Worthington is a Columbus suburb inside the 270 outer-belt. Worthington has a village green that is still used today, but cows do not graze there as they once did... (there are cows down the road but that's a different story... )  The Village of Worthington was founded in 1803.  The original village was from Morning to Evening Streets and North Street to South Street.

The Old Rectory is on the corner of New England Ave. and Oxford Street NOW. It's been moved.  The Old Rectory is owned … (0 comments)
