family activities: How Long Has It Been Since You Made a Paper Airplane?? - 02/24/12 01:01 AM
How long has it been since you made a paper airplane??  Just thinking about it gives you that urge to fold up some paper and let it fly, right?  If you are near the Olympia area this coming Saturday, February 25, 2012, you can not only give in to that urge but also show your kids how it's done.
The event starts at 1:00 PM at the Olympic Flight Museum, 7637-A Old Highway 99 SE, and is open to all ages.  There will be instruction in folding in various ways and techniques to fly those planes with distance and accuracy.  The … (9 comments)

family activities: Sand, Kites, and Fireworks at Ocean Shores for 4th of July! - 07/05/11 07:47 AM

Our family headed out on a 4th of July outing to Ocean Shores yesterday, and found that - surprise - quite a  few people had that very same idea!  When the sun is shining, the ocean beach is a wonderful place to be.  And since it was 4th of July, there were lots of groups of family and friends, complete with portable grills, picnic and BBQ supplies.
The wind was gusting around enough that sweatshirts were more the dress of the day than tank tops and swim suits, though a few brave souls were boogie boarding and swimming - … (3 comments)

family activities: This Week at Olympia Farmer's Market - 06/12/10 09:11 AM
After a number of weeks of unseasonably chilly, damp weather, today's BEAUTIFUL sunshine brought what looked like most of the town down to Olympia's Farmer's Market!  Definitely one of those days when you have to circle the parking lot watching for someone heading to their car to leave - then lurk to grab their space as soon as they back out.

Musicians were just tuning up on the stage, and many people were already filling the tables in front , ready to enjoy the music while they munched on some late breakfast, early lunch or just snacks.

Yummy looking … (4 comments)

family activities: Olympia's Public Pool is....Not Exactly a Pool! - 06/07/10 07:45 AM

Sunshine in Olympia this past Saturday had our family downtown playing along with many others.  Now Olympia does not actually have a public outdoor pool when sunshine calls you to go get in the water.  But this interactive fountain sure serves the purpose well!  Kids (OK - all ages!) enjoy playing in the fountain or watching the fun from the grass surrounding it.  The water spouts up unexpectedly, making sure everyone is giggly and wet before long.

And then you can stroll along by Capitol Lake across the street, or start up a game of frisbee in the … (0 comments)

family activities: This Weekend at Olympia's Farmer's Market - 05/23/10 09:33 AM
This weekend's visit to Olympia's Farmer's Market had so many goodies that I had to make two trips back out to my car!  I actually went to the market to get some more veggie plants for the garden, but got sidetracked a time or two on the way - not unusual for a market full of yummy, yummy things!

The asparagus from Eastern Washington was still looking so good that I NEEDED some of that....and a couple more apples....  And oh my - just look at the Walla Walla sweet onions that just came in!

And then the flowers … (4 comments)

family activities: Olympia's Wooden Boat Fair - a Perfect Mother's Day Outing! - 05/10/10 08:39 AM
Yesterday was a gorgeous day in Olympia - and spending it downtown at the annual Wooden Boat Fair was a terrific way to spend Mother's Day!!

So many cool boats were lined up at the Percival landing boardwalk area, including many that encouraged people to come aboard and check out the detail.

Some of the boats had history galore, from the Sand Man which is now in its 100th year, or another boat whose info sheet showed that it was used as a patrol boat in World War 2.

The food booths were bustling with people getting everything … (3 comments)

family activities: You Saw Elephants, Alligators & Bees in the Street? No You Aren't Crazy! - 04/25/10 10:19 AM
If you saw LOTS of strange creatures in the streets of Olympia yesterday, you weren't dreaming or hallucinating!  It was our annual Procession of the Species - a chance for the creative spirit to flourish in Olympia as people pay tribute to our natural world and the elements and creatures within it.

The crowd starts to gather well before the start time of the procession, but there is plenty of chalk to keep everyone well entertained drawing in the streets.  And even many of the spectators are dressed up for the occasion so there is crowd watching at its best.

family activities: Baby Animal Time at Olympia's Lattin Farms - 04/16/10 10:23 AM
What a fun visit we had yesterday to Lattin's Farm in Olympia!!  Springtime is baby animal time and the farm had lots of babies to admire and photograph!
I think that my little granddaughter liked the baby goats best - and I have to admit they were super cute!  The littlest ones were fast asleep together under a tree.

The slightly bigger ones were busy chasing each other and playing, and then detouring over to mom for a quick snack!

The floppy ears on these little goats were part of their charm.

There were also baby bunnies, … (12 comments)

Farmer's Market is always a place to see old friends and it's pretty essential to plan on plenty of time to browse, visit, nibble, and stop to listen to the live music or watch the balloon man create fun balloon animals.

Lots of bazaars provide unique, handmade treasures for people on your shopping list (or you!) - I attended the annual one at St. Martin's in Lacey yesterday and really enjoyed looking at everything from silk scarves, jewelry, purses and bags, to pickles, jams, garlic sauces and Chehalis melt- in- your- mouth yummy mints.  There were toys, table runners, decorations galore - and so many people enjoying shopping for something just a little special!
Tomorrow in downtown Olympia, … (2 comments)
