snow: March Came In Like a Lion - And I Am Ready For the Lamb! - 03/13/12 12:05 PM
There have been lots of signs that spring is nearly here in the Olympia area - bulbs are coming up, trees are budding, and my calendar says it is nearly mid March.

But....waking up this morning, what do I see but white stuff falling from the sky!! Lots of white stuff, falling - and sticking!  Seriously??  I sure hope since March came in like a lion with plenty of rain, then wind, and now snow....we can soon expect March to turn into a nice mellow lamb to bring springtime our way.
Please...pretty please!

snow: The Olympia Snowstorm WAS Really Beautiful! (I Say That Now That It's Gone) - 02/07/12 02:03 PM

From today's vantage point of sunshine and really mild, springlike weather, I think I can look back at the pictures I took during Olympia's big snow and ice storm - and actually appreciate them.  When we were in the midst of being snowbound, hearing falling trees and cracking branches all around, and wondering WHEN our power would come back on - well, I noticed the beauty of the wintry scene....but couldn't really appreciate it.

First came snow....and  more snow....and still more snow.  How exciting to be among the areas with the deepest accumulation in the Puget Sound area!  … (6 comments)

snow: The Snow My Gosh Blizzard in Olympia - 01/21/12 05:59 PM
Snow, snow and more snow....fun and beautiful....until the ice storm follow up! Life is looking much sunnier today with our power back on and temperatures up enough that the mountain of snow is melting. Slowly but melting. What did I learn? Once power is off for long enough that the inside of the house is barely above 50 degrees and there's also no water since we 're on a well....I start to get a little whiny. But also grateful to wake up yesterday to see that none of the beautiful (and BIG) trees around our house had fallen and squished us … (6 comments)

snow: Hmmm - My Car is in There SOMEWHERE! - 01/16/12 03:36 PM

Snow in the Olympia WA area is always a really BIG deal - even if the amount of snow is not so big.  I've been chuckling about the post on several Facebook friends' walls where a freeway readerboard says something like "Is that a Snowflake? - Aaah We're All Going to Die!"  And since the forecast is for more snow tonight and tomorrow and then possibly a big "snow event" on Wednesday, everyone is scrambling to get ready - just in case.
So, yep - here I am tying up a few loose ends at the office, heading … (10 comments)

snow: Well, Look What WE Woke Up To! - 11/19/11 05:08 PM
The Olympia area weather forecasts had said that snow was a possibility - but I was still a little surprised to wake up this morning to a light, powdery white covering on our lawn, trees and shrubs.

Our Lab was beside herself with glee and had to race around the yard a few times before her regular morning walk - she LOVES snow!!
Although it seems a little early for this wintery weather, I guess I get as excited about the first snow as my granddaughter does!  So, so pretty - while it lasts!

snow: Let's Call it a Snow Day in Olympia!!! - 02/25/11 05:39 PM
Let's call it a snow day in Olympia!  Actually this is day two of us being almost snowed in, with schools closed and many businesses starting late and closing early.

We had about 7 inches of snow in our yard yesterday and it was coming down like crazy.  So being self-employed works nicely on days like that - I declared it a snow day and stayed home to play!

Considering that some years we don't even get measurable snow in Olympia, when we get this kind of accumulation, the roads are a mess - but the playfulness is ON!  … (13 comments)

snow: Take Time To Catch Snowflakes on Your Tongue - 01/12/11 07:58 PM
When the weather forecasters start talking about snow coming, do you react with excited anticipation or dread?  Our predicted snow here in Olympia WA started falling late afternoon yesterday and, like probably the majority of the "grownups", I started thinking "Better go to the store & get more milk....Oh this might mean I have to rearrange my schedule - what an inconvenience...Oh and the roads are just gonna be a nightmare...."
But... then my granddaughter comes over, squealing with glee as she runs from window to window looking at the big fat flakes creating a cascading curtain of white outside.  And a … (7 comments)

snow: It's Snowing in Olympia!! Yes, It's Snowing in Olympia!! - 11/21/10 07:22 PM
It's snowing in Olympia!!  Yes, it's snowing in Olympia!!  And yes, this is early for snowfall here - after all some winters we never get any snow at all.  But it is most definitely snowing - and sticking.  You can tell it's not all that common since people are either REALLY gleeful - or REALLY grumpy about it  Not much in between opinion when it comes to snow.  And if it makes the morning commute a mess, some of the gleeful may switch in a hurry to grumpy.
But for right now, it is so pretty glistening on the evergreen branches, and … (8 comments)

snow: Too Much Snow!!! - 12/22/08 06:49 PM

Oh my gosh, we have a real winter happening here in Olympia - the kind I remember from growing up in Illinois, but had kind of enjoyed NOT having here!  I think we are now up to nearly a foot of snow in our yard and the driveway has enough that my car can't make it to the street.  Not that I am really eager to make it to the street as it is full of frozen ruts and is not a pretty picture at all.  Before I whine too much, I do want to make it clear that … (0 comments)
