tumwater: Schools Are Open Tomorrow In Olympia, Lacey & Tumwater, WA - 09/06/11 12:54 PM
The first day of the 2011 school year is Wednesday, September 7th in Olympia, Lacey and Tumwater, WA. Kids are excited to see their friends, and the roads near each school will be busier than usual with school buses and parents dropping off their kids.

Be sure to watch for the school zone signs and SLOW down. And remember that as school buses stop to let kids on or off, if they have their stop sign out you must stop - and watch out for excited kids darting across the street!

tumwater: Totem Poles in the Pacific NW - 06/02/10 05:25 AM

I am fascinated with the artwork and cultural heritage displayed in the totem poles here in the Pacific Northwest.  There are a number of them around Olympia & Tumwater, each with different creatures featured.  Traditionally totem poles have been sculptures created by the regional Indian tribes from large trees - often cedar as it is, and was historically, plentiful in this region.  Carved into the wooden poles are images of animals, birds, fish - symbols that the totem pole creator found important or that illustrate a story.  The word "totem" was apparently derived from the Ojibwe word "odoodem" meaning … (1 comments)

tumwater: Tumwater, WA - A River Runs Through It - & A Freeway Too - Your Tuesday Tidbit - 02/16/10 06:59 AM
Tumwater, WA was first called New Market, but the Chinook Indian word for waterfall gave it the name Tumwater.  Pretty fitting since the city sits on the Deschutes River with Tumwater Falls Park providing space to play, watch the salmon return up the river to spawn, and walk the river trail to watch the cascading water.

In the 1950's, Tumwater saw another route run through it as the I-5 freeway cut right through the city to create the current freeway corridor that runs all the way from California to the Washington/Canadian border.  The highway construction permanently separated the area … (2 comments)

Don't miss the cool upcoming 4th of July celebration in Tumwater!  It starts off with a big parade at 11 AM on July 4th - parade starts at the corner of Capitol Blvd and Lee St & continues to right by City Hall on Israel Rd.  This year the theme for the parade is "Everyday Superheroes" & expect to see classic cars, dance teams, horses & more.
Later in the day (starting at 6 PM) is the Tumwater Artesian Festival & big fireworks show!  These are sponsored by the Tumwater Downtown Association & admission is free!  The event is held at … (0 comments)

tumwater: Lacey Rotary 20th Duck Dash - 06/08/09 07:14 AM
This past Saturday we went to the Lacey Rotary Duck Dash in Tumwater Falls Park & it was a blast!  I'm not sure how we managed to have not gone before this year since this is the 20th year it has been held, but I'm glad we got there finally this time.  Our almost 2 year old granddaughter thought it was a great idea right from the time we parked and rode on the shuttle bus to the event (actually she has been wanting to ride the bus again ever since!).

The park had games, a giant slide, face painting, … (3 comments)

tumwater: Olympia area listing inventory - smaller than you think! - 05/05/09 06:18 AM
I like taking a periodic look at the MLS numbers for the Olympia/Lacey/Tumwater area to check out the accuracy of my gut impressions of what is happening in our real estate market.  Lately I have been working with several buyers who are finding not such a large supply of available homes as the media might make you think is out there.
If I search in the 3 city area for active residential listings, and exclude manufactured homes, fixers, & presales (these buyers are all wanting something they can move into in the next 30-60 days) the total number of all prices … (1 comments)

tumwater: Olympia Area Favorites - Tumwater Falls Park - 03/11/09 07:47 AM
My Part 5 favorite is actually located in Tumwater, not Olympia - but Tumwater Falls Park is a popular destination for the entire greater Olympia area.  For over 45 years the park has been open to the public, giving visitors a close-up look at the natural beauty of the Deschutes River and Tumwater Falls.  The park is privately owned by the Olympia Tumwater Foundation (www.olytumfoundation.org)  and preserves a site of historic significance for our region.

Historic records show the area was used as a fishing & food gathering camp for the Coastal Salish Indians, and then became the 1st permanent American … (0 comments)
