While we are busy celebrating America’s birthday, it’s easy to forget that our dogs and cats might not think it’s so much fun. In fact, they can be terrified by both the sight and sound of fireworks. They can also become upset if you have a number of guests coming and going in your home. I worked for years in animal rescue, and the days following July 4 were always the heaviest in terms of lost dog reports. Sadly, most of those dogs were never found. Today is the 4th of July - Independence Day. It's a day to celebrate the fact that 241 years ago, a group of brave patriots signed a document declaring our Independence. They risked their lives, their fortunes, and their honor - and they did it without hesitation because they believed that we in America should be free. Since then, thousands of brave men and women have given their lives to maintain that freedom. And yet... my email is full of Independence Day sales on everything from cigars to stockings. 4th of july: The Longest "Holiday Week-end" of 2012?

When an "immovable" holiday falls on Wednesday, which week-end is the holiday week-end? As we're already seeing, both are! And not only that, some people take off before the week-end even arrives. Debbie Gartner mentioned that yesterday in her post about how sometimes things simply go downhill. The flooring that wasn't delivered as promised on Thursday was finally delivered late on Friday, because the delivery company was short staffed due to the holiday. Their "time off" caused her a whole lot of extra "time on," not to mention the stress it caused the homeowners. So, this 4th of July … (13 comments)

As you get ready to enjoy this holiday week-end with friends and family, remember that some of your family members might not find it so enjoyable. Your dogs and cats might find it terrifying. The sight, sound, and smell of fireworks can set them into a panic. If left outdoors, they can try to run away from it, and subsequently become lost. When working in animal rescue, I found the week after the 4th of July to be the most heartbreaking, as report after report of lost pets poured in. About a dozen years ago I was operating a real estate agency in our small town of Priest River, Idaho and I was bothered by the fact that the 4th of July celebration I remembered from childhood had somehow fallen by the wayside. So I went to a Chamber of Commerce meeting and suggested that it might be time to bring it back. They said "Sure, go ahead and do it." OK then - was anyone going to help? Heck no!
