How would you react if you heard the tornado sirens?

It was 3 AM and I'd just crawled back into bed after my tenth, or so it seemed, trip to the bathroom. All of a sudden, I heard the weather siren, a.k.a. air raid drill siren for those of us who lived during the Cold War. I couldn't believe my ears, so I went to the window, opened it, confirmed what I thought I'd heard, and mumbled "Oh, %@*$" under my breath.

The first thing I did was grab my cordless and cell phones, then headed downstairs. Buddy followed obediently; Dudley, who is old, took his good old time. I thought, no, this isn't happening, so I opened the front door. All was calm, but then there's the calm before the storm. I ran down the basement stairs, again with Buddy joining me willingly. Dudley wasn't the least bit cooperative; he hates the open-back stairs. As I sat there, yelling, coaxing, pleading for him to come down, I decided to run back up and get his leash. He was excited when he saw it, but it didn't help convince him to join me.

While I was up there I decided to flip on the TV. Again, I was in denial. Sure enough; "Tornado Warning." Double %@*$. I ran back down to the basement, this time praying Dud would be OK up there. Then it hit me. I'd better call all my family members. I had two phones, so I was calling two at a time. Try it; it's an art. Of course, when each of them answered they thought someone had died. After all, it's now only 3:05 AM. No one calls them at that hour unless it's bad news.

My oldest daughter said she would gather her clan and head for their basement. My youngest daughter said it was probably just a drill and to call her back if the house started rattling. Needless to say, I loudly suggested that she and her boyfriend get their @$$&$ out of bed. I then called my husband, who lives on our boat during the summer. We call it our yearly trial separation. Thank goodness, we've never been successful. He always comes back in the fall once the leaves start turning and the heater on the boat is needed. He assured me that he was much safer on the boat than going to the clubhouse. He was going to ride it out. I'll say, just like Dorothy and Toto. I had my sister on the other line, who said she already knew about it because she hadn't gone to bed yet. Just then, my dear, precious neighbor called. I thanked her for the call and felt so bad that I hadn't thought to call her first.

I sat on an old box, waiting for "the train." I knew I should get under the stairs, but there's so much junk stored there I took my chances. All I could think about was that I had to get up in less than three hours to drive to a seminar. At that moment, I was more agitated by the inconvenience of the whole situation than I was scared.

My sister called a few minutes later to tell me she heard on their weather radio that the coast was clear. I then called each of the above people to give them the news, after which I went back to bed to get my remaining two-and-a-half hours sleep.

Karen, you'll love this... I picked up Carolyn this morning for the seminar. On the way, I said, "Wow, wasn't last night something?" She said, "Yes, what was the siren all about." I then informed her there had been a tornado warning. That thought had never occurred to her!!! I added Carolyn to the list of people I have to call if this ever happens again!

What's the Age of Your Brain?

I found this really cool website earlier today that tests your brain age. You will be asked to register (first name only) and then complete three exercises. These will measure your reaction time, sustained vigilance, alertness and decision making ability.

http://www.portfolio.com/interactive-features/2008/06/Brain-Age

I am 58 and scored at age 47. I think I would have scored better, but at one point my cell phone rang. I jumped which caused me to press the wrong key. It then took me a couple seconds to regroup because I was berating myself for missing the correct answer. Lesson learned... be sure to take the test, which lasts only a few minutes, when you won't be disturbed.

Please share your results. It will be interesting to learn how others did.

Happy testing!

Alternate fuels - Why is the U.S. so far behind?

Why is the U.S. so far behind other countries in the research and utilization of alternate fuels? I watched a TV show tonight during which they talked about Brazil and their use of sugar ethanol. Here in the U.S. we have played around with corn ethanol, but it has proven to be too expensive to produce, thereby offsetting the benefit. Brazil, according to this show and the following article, is now energy independent.

"Over the past three decades Brazil has worked to create a viable alternative to gasoline. With its sugarcane-based fuel, the nation may become energy independent this year. Brazil's ethanol program, which originated in the 1970s in response to the uncertainties of the oil market, has enjoyed intermittent success. Still, many Brazilians are driving "flexible fuel" cars that run on either ethanol or gasoline and allow the consumer to fill up with whichever option is cheaper - often ethanol. Countries with large fuel bills such as India and China are following Brazil's progress closely. The US is taking small steps towards the use of ethanol, but its process, relying on corn, is lengthier and more expensive. In addition, countries such as Japan and Sweden are importing ethanol from Brazil to help fulfill their environmental obligations under the Kyoto Protocol. Running cars on carbohydrates instead of fossil fuels may not be a new idea, and ethanol has drawbacks, but the fuel offers an attractive alternative as oil prices climb." - YaleGlobal Online

They interviewed a General Motors executive who proclaimed they are ready to produce vehicles compatible with this alternative fuel. He said that one of the reasons we have not gone to sugar ethanol is because the gas companies refuse to add ethanol pumps at their stations.

We have George and all his cronies to thank for this!

I live in Painesville, Ohio, a small town about 22 miles east of Cleveland. In a recent survey, Cleveland ranked sixth in the nation for courteous drivers, even when traffic was backed up. I'm so glad to see Cleveland receiving positive recognition. The survey was conducted by a company based in Connecticut.

The article has some great advice... drivers should take a deep breath, slow down, be aware, and be careful.

Good advice no matter where you live! Especially for us Realtors who always seem to be in a hurry.

Happy Mother's Day to Me!

Our youngest daughter splits her time between sort of living at home with us and the remainder of the time is spent at her boyfriend's house (yes Mother, they are living in sin!). She called just before midnight to make sure I was still up (I'm usually up until at least 1:00 am) and to tell me she was coming home. She didn't want to scare me when she pulled into the driveway.

She walked in with a huge bouquet of flowers and a lovely card. I even got a kiss on the cheek. Happy Mother's Day to me!

I am the very proud grandmother of three beautiful grandchildren, but this post is about my oldest grandson Christopher, age 19. Chris was named after me, a very wise move on his mother's part since I buy all the Christmas gifts. Always stay on my good side, I say. It seems like just yesterday when Chris was born. My husband was my daughter's coach. Don was able to watch his birth; I stood just outside the delivery room. I remember to this day the nurse bringing him out just minutes after he entered this world to take him to the nursery. She stopped briefly so I could have a glimpse of the little human being who would forever change my outlook on life.

Until he was about three, his doctor watched him very carefully. His head was huge and we were all very concerned.

By four, his little body had grown proportional to his head and he no longer looked like a lollypop.

(Here is Christopher showing off his first fishing success.)

As the years went by, Chris demonstrated his sweetness and compassion. At a wrestling tournament one of his opponents was a handicapped boy. Chris won the match, but he was so gentle and careful not to hurt the boy. Everyone was so impressed how he handled the situation.

Christopher graduated high school a couple years ago and has grown to be a caring, responsible and mature young man.

The reason I am writing this post is because my precious boy is entering the Air Force in 10 days. I am trying so hard not to get weepy. After all, with emails and cell phones he'll be able to stay in touch. But, it just won't be the same. I'll miss his unannounced visits. I'll miss his asking if I have any work for him to do to earn money when knows I will just hand him a $20 bill. Life will not be the same. I'm happy for the new places he will go and the things he will experience, but I am also very sad.

It seems like just yesterday he was a little boy. Where has the time gone?

<img src="http://activerain.com/image_store/uploads/7/6/3/3/2/ar12097440323367.jpg" height="177" alt="U.
Jose Canseco Loses House to Foreclosure

Seems like the foreclosure "bug" is even hitting the wealthy. Jose Canseco admitted today that he owes $2.5M on his California mansion and that, in his words, "it didn't make financial sense for me to keep paying a mortgage on a home that was basically owned by someone else."

Now, I would like to assume that he is having financial difficulty, but he said he "just decided to let it go" and that he sympathized with other American who lost their homes due to soaring interest rates on sub-prime loans. Was he dumb enough to have one of those loans?

Which brings me to, what happened to all the money he earned? Apparently, his two divorces cost about $7-8M, but what about the rest of it. What a shame that he didn't spend more wisely. This just proves that athletes who are making huge amounts of money had better plan for the day when the game is over.

Finally! Mortgage companies helping struggling Ohioans avoid foreclosure

For many Ohioans in trouble, help is on the way! Nine mortgage servicing companies promised Ohio state officials they would try to help struggling Ohioans avoid foreclosure.

They agreed to the following:

- Work with adjustable rate and subprime mortgage holders to modify their loan terms when help is needed.

- Identify, evaluate and make good faith attempts to contact at-risk or defaulting borrowers as soon as possible.

- Modify loans to the extent permissible within existing fiduciary and legal obligations, following mortgage lending and servicing practices.

- Create incentives for staff and foreclosure lawyers to modify loans rather than seek foreclosure.

- Report progress to the Ohio Department of Commerrce.

- Make a nonbinding agreement with Ohio through June 30, 2009.

For many, this comes too late! For others, let's hope this will turn things around and get real estate sales back on track.

What do you think?

Do Newsletters Work?

YES, THEY DO!

About 18 months ago, a young man called me who had been referred by one of my favorite clients. He was in the process of moving here from Florida and needed help finding a rental home for himself and his wife. I gathered together the information about properties available in our area, but as it turned out one of his new coworkers had a house that he ended up renting.

I knew that their goal was to eventually purchase a home, so I put him on my newsletter list.

Well, business has been down (what's new these days!), and I've been a little bummed about it. Today, out of the blue he called me and asked to see a house he and his wife had seen while driving around neighborhoods. We toured it today and they absolutely love it. They plan to make an offer as soon as we get their mortgage approval letter, which should be tomorrow.

I asked them what made them call me instead of the listing agent, and he said that because I have stayed in touch every month they never even considered calling anyone else.

I've gone from bummed to beaming. It's amazing how this business can turn on a dime!

I have a listing that I recently found out is going into foreclosure. The sellers currently have two offers on the table, but both are short. To make a very long story short (speaking of short), my sellers refuse to counter, or even look at either offer. They told me yesterday that they are just going to let the bank take the house here in Ohio. Their comment was that they don't have to worry about the nosedive their credit is going to take because they have already bought another house in another state,

After reading several articles this evening about short sales, foreclosures, uncooperative buyers and sellers, I asked myself, "Isn't it time to go on vacation?" Though I take my laptop and stay current with the happenings of my business, I spend much less time thinking about real estate when I'm away.

For the past several years, Don and I have spent our vacations in Maine. It started eight years ago, when for our 25th anniversary we did a two-week tour of New England. We stayed in gorgeous inns, went on a whale watching trip, took a carriage ride in Acadia, ate seafood until we could eat no more, and in general had the time of our lives. Awesome trip. We both especially liked Maine, so every year since we have returned. Last year we spent three weeks in Maine during leaf peeper season (Sept.-Oct), and this year we will spend at least three weeks, if not more. We're staying in Cape Porpoise, Camden and Bass Harbor, each for a week. Maine is my escape, my sanity.

So, I was wondering if other people have a special place, somewhere that calls them back year after year. I'd love to hear your stories and I'm sure others would love to read them, if only to escape from this crazy reality called real estate for five minutes.

Great time flexibility when you're a REALTOR

Yes, as REALTORS we may feel as though we work 24/7, but there aren't many occupations where you can make a great living and not have to get permission from THE BOSS to take time off. All my adult life I worked in the corporate atmosphere, and although I was blessed with bosses that allowed, almost encouraged me to take part in and be available for my children's activities, there is something liberating about not having to ask anyone. I know when I can play and when I need to work. It's a balance and it feels good. The one thing it has allowed me to do is get more involved in my community. Today, while sitting in my 4:00 pm Painesville Community Improvement Corporation meeting I thought to myself that I could never have attended that meeting if I still worked for someone else. I have total control over my calendar and choose what to do and when to do it. It feels WONDERFUL!

Golden Retriever Rescue Organization

Are you thinking of adding a dog to your life. What a wonderful gift you'll be giving yourself. I am a dog lover, and am particularly partial to Golden Retrievers. They are known for their willingness to please, their gentleness with children and elderly, and their overall good-natured temperament.

We currently have Dudley, aged 12, and just added Buddy to our fold. Actually, Buddy is a heartworm-positive foster we are caring for while he recuperates. He is an absolute delight. I have no idea why someone would have given him up, let along not providing him with the monthly medication necessary to prevent heartworm.

The reason for this post is to promote our local Golden Retriever rescue organization, G.R.I.N. A strictly volunteer organization, they were able to save and find homes for almost 200 Goldens in 2007 alone. The area covered by G.R.I.N is basically NE Ohio and a portion of NW PA. Check out their website at: www.grinrescue.org. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
