When one mentions the word investment we naturally picture charts and graphs and start looking for the highs and lows.  Investing in real estate for a vacation home always seems a bit more complex then just looking at the charts.  We know that real estate is a long term investment and that we should be looking for the highs and the lows yet we often want more out of a vacation home then just appreciation.  There are the intangible investments of family memory's, relaxing get a ways and pride of ownership.  Balancing both the tangible and the intangible parts along with your personal finance's can be tricky.  With the market data showing that real estate has been a poor performing asset over the last two years and the economy not seeming to be moving up, how do you make that decision to move ahead on that dream vacation home.

The best way forward is to prioritize what you want out of your investment.  By putting some of the intangibles first on the priority list may allow a different perspective on why you are investing in the first place.  The right spot on the graph might not be as important as the lifestyle benefits of a great vacation home.

If you can't help but look at the charts, now may be the opportunity to have both a good investment and a great vacation home lifestyle.  Based on recent statics from the commerce department existing home sales across the country have increased 3.1% for the month of July to the highest level in six months.  New home sales have increased 2.4% nation wide, with the west leading the way having increased sales of 9.7%.  Prices have also started to stabilize in areas such as California and Florida leading to the conclusion that we may have hit bottom for real estate prices.

It may be time to think about that quaint mountain cabin, and sitting on your deck with the smell of pine trees around you as you sip that glass of wine.  Watching the kids play in the snow from the warmth of the fires place, or planning that next adventure right outside your door. Now may be the right time to invest in both family happiness and the right spot on the chart.  It's not often that these opportunities come together as they are right now.
