It's Black Friday Again - Have We Learned Any Lessons In America? - 11/27/09 08:39 AM
At the Thanksgiving dinner table yesterday, I said to my 17 year old son "You'll be telling your kids and maybe your grandkids stories about how bad things were when you were a teenager and millions of people were losing their jobs and their homes. Middle class families found themselves living in shelters and 1 in 4 kids went to bed hungry some nights here in America." Fortunes have been made - and lost - over the last 10 years. It's been a decade of extremes...from the stock market crash in 2000 to seasons of crushing hurricanes in the Southeast, from

Thanksgiving Gifts From My Mountain Garden in Murphy, North Carolina - 11/25/09 01:18 PM
Today my youngest daughter and I made mountain memories. We took a break from baking pies and chopping vegetables to wander through the garden, collecting the last of Nature's bounty to create a centerpiece for our holiday table. The knockout roses are still blooming, despite the frost a few weeks ago. We'll clip the last of those to enjoy. They'll go nicely with clusters of bright red berries from the nandina bushes. I'll add sprigs of rosemary from the bush that's grown so large, along with some holly. I've never been able to grow holly in any of

Just in Time for Thanksgiving - Save Money At The New Grocery Outlet in Murphy, North Carolina - 11/20/09 03:08 PM
There's a great new option for grocery shopping in Murphy, North Carolina. United Grocery Outlet has just opened its newly expanded store in the shopping center on Andrews Road in Murphy. The new store is double the size of the former location on Hwy 64. With a wide, well-lit produce aisle and large upright freezer cases, the new location gives shoppers more choices while keeping the low prices that they are known for. There's a welcome addition in this new larger location - a full meat department with butchers who will cut your steaks any size you want. During

Cowboy Up! Try some mountain-style coffee - 11/16/09 03:17 PM
We don't have any Starbucks grande moccachinos here in the mountains of Murphy, North Carolina. But we do have great coffee - at least at my house. Cowboy coffee is what my husband calls it. All our guests love it... as long as they don't know how it's made. Once they hear the recipe, they either line up with cups in hand or reach for the teabags. But I'm hooked. For years, I couldn't drink coffee at all, not even decaf. But cowboy coffee is so smooth - there's no harsh aftertaste. Vickie McCartney, you've asked for it... so here's the secret

Sometimes Home Is a Place In Your Heart - Memories of Michigan - 11/15/09 04:39 PM
Dawn is breaking on opening day of deer camp in Northern Michigan. It's a crisp fall morning, with the temperature somewhere in the mid-40's, unlike years past, when we often woke to several inches of fresh snow. Our hardy hunters have already headed into the woods and everyone else in the cabin is still fast asleep. We've made an 800 mile trip to be here in this cabin for a few hours on this one November morning, to revisit old friends and old memories... and make new ones. But since I walked in the door, this place has

Do What you Love and the Money Will Follow - 11/14/09 07:47 AM
Last week I got a heartbreaking phone call. A young woman who bought her dream mountain property from me a few years ago was fighting back tears as she told me she had to sell her lot right away for whatever she could get for it. Her husband of just a few years was in the hospital with liver and kidney failure and she had just lost her job because of all the time she took off to be at his bedside. Her lot was already listed a a bargain basement price but there haven't been any buyers in that mountain

Irises and Autumn Leaves - A Goodbye Gift From My 2009 Mountain Garden in Murphy NC - 11/04/09 11:03 AM
This morning I had a surprise waiting for me in the garden. After days of clouds and rain here in Murphy, North Carolina, it was a joy to see the sun again and I was spending a few minutes strolling in the yard when I spied something bright yellow in the distance. I was amazed to see my favorite yellow iris in full bloom. We've had a frost already, followed by warmer weather and lots of rain, so I guess she couldn't wait till spring to show off! I'm continually surprised and pleased at how easy it is to garden in

You Changed Your Clock - Is It Time to Change Your Life? - 11/02/09 03:34 PM
November is here and traditionally it's the time to begin preparing for the holidays. For most of us, it's like taking on an additional part time job - shopping, cooking, decorating, wrapping gifts, entertaining. Since joining Activerain, I've already taken on a second full time job... writing market reports and hyperlocal posts, revamping my website and attending online courses in Internet marketing and technology, otherwise known as reading blogs. The homework level is crippling. As I sat down at the computer this morning, I found a note to myself scribbled on a scrap of paper: "Edit your life as though you're a writer or
