At the Thanksgiving dinner table yesterday, I said to my 17 year old son "You'll be telling your kids and maybe your grandkids stories about how bad things were when you were a teenager and millions of people were losing their jobs and their homes. Middle class families found themselves living in shelters and 1 in 4 kids went to bed hungry some nights here in America."

Thanksgiving Gifts From My Mountain Garden in Murphy, North Carolina - 11/25/09 01:18 PM
Today my youngest daughter and I made mountain memories. We took a break from baking pies and chopping vegetables to wander through the garden, collecting the last of Nature's bounty to create a centerpiece for our holiday table.
The knockout roses are still blooming, despite the frost a few weeks ago. We'll clip the last of those to enjoy. They'll go nicely with clusters of bright red berries from the nandina bushes.

We don't have any Starbucks grande moccachinos here in the mountains of Murphy, North Carolina. But we do have great coffee - at least at my house.
Cowboy coffee is what my husband calls it. All our guests love it... as long as they don't know how it's made. Once they hear the recipe, they either line up with cups in hand or reach for the teabags. But I'm hooked. For years, I couldn't drink coffee at all, not even decaf. But cowboy coffee is so smooth - there's no harsh aftertaste.

Dawn is breaking on opening day of deer camp in Northern Michigan.
It's a crisp fall morning, with the temperature somewhere in the mid-40's, unlike years past, when we often woke to several inches of fresh snow. Our hardy hunters have already headed into the woods and everyone else in the cabin is still fast asleep.

Last week I got a heartbreaking phone call. A young woman who bought her dream mountain property from me a few years ago was fighting back tears as she told me she had to sell her lot right away for whatever she could get for it. Her husband of just a few years was in the hospital with liver and kidney failure and she had just lost her job because of all the time she took off to be at his bedside.

This morning I had a surprise waiting for me in the garden. After days of clouds and rain here in Murphy, North Carolina, it was a joy to see the sun again and I was spending a few minutes strolling in the yard when I spied something bright yellow in the distance.

November is here and traditionally it's the time to begin preparing for the holidays. For most of us, it's like taking on an additional part time job - shopping, cooking, decorating, wrapping gifts, entertaining.
Since joining Activerain, I've already taken on a second full time job... writing market reports and hyperlocal posts, revamping my website and attending online courses in Internet marketing and technology, otherwise known as reading blogs. The homework level is crippling.
