north carolina mountain living: From Cantaloupes to... Coffins? It's the Tuesday Morning Flea Market in Murphy, North Carolina! - 07/15/10 04:04 PM

Don't bother calling me at the office on Tuesday before 9:30 or so.  I'm usually dashing up and down the aisles of my favorite local flea market, on a quest for the freshest produce, the perfect plant for that bare spot in the garden - or the ideal gift for my latest mountain home buyer.  I always find SOMETHING I can't live without at the Tuesday morning flea market.  It's down by the river, just off Hwy 64 West in Murphy, North Carolina.
But this week's market featured an item that's to die for, as the saying goes.  It was an honest to … (5 comments)

north carolina mountain living: Enjoy Summer Cookouts at Your Mountain Chalet - Add An Outdoor Grilling Station - 06/08/10 05:04 PM

With our mild four-season climate, outdoor living in the mountains of Murphy, North Carolina is a year-round activity.  At our house, we greet the sunrise with a cup of cowboy coffee on our porch overlooking the mountains nearly every morning.
But there was no convenient place to spread out all the fixings for a summer barbecue with friends or for my husband's famous Oriental stir-fry, prepared on the giant wok he made from a metal plowing disc.

But today we have a new outdoor cooking area tucked under our covered porch, just in time for the big graduation party for my … (2 comments)

north carolina mountain living: Days of Future Passed - The Moody Blues in Asheville - 03/23/10 01:56 PM
Rainbow colored spotlights played out over the audience, reflecting off a sea of bald heads.  Most of the crowd looked like they qualified for a senior discount.  But by the time The Moody Blues finished "I'm Just a Singer in a Rock and Roll Band," everyone in the auditorium was propelled out of their seats, rocking with the legendary group.

We headed for Asheville last Friday to catch The Moody Blues on tour.  It was a great excuse to spend the weekend in one of my favorite cities.  Asheville feels like a college town.  There's a diverse group of people gathered together, extremely tolerant … (3 comments)

north carolina mountain living: You Look Like the First Day of Spring - Sunshine and Daffodils in My Mountain Garden in Murphy NC - 03/08/10 04:48 PM

Or do you look like you've just been through a long, hard winter?  According to Zig Zigler, one of my favorite speakers on the motivational circuit, you can describe the same thing but paint 2 very different word pictures.
So how do I describe this hardy little soul, peeking out of a pile of fallen leaves in a corner of my woodland garden on March 7 in Murphy, North Carolina?  This is the first year that I've lived in the mountains and haven't seen flowers blooming in February.  A solitary little daffodil is the only one brave enough to come out into the long-awaited … (5 comments)

north carolina mountain living: What's Deadlier Than a Drunk Driver - And May Be Lurking In Your Basement? - 03/04/10 11:50 AM
You can't see it, hear it, taste it or smell it.  But radon gas kills more people every year than drunk driving.  According to the US Surgeon General, radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the country, ranking just below smoking.  And it's found in varying levels everywhere in the United States, with pockets of medium to high concentration here in the North Carolina mountains.
In the last year I've had three buyers here in Cherokee County decide to test for radon gas along with the other home inspections.  Two of the three homes tested had levels higher … (8 comments)

north carolina mountain living: A Fall Color Tour of the World's Oldest Mountains in Murphy, North Carolina - 10/27/09 01:13 PM

I spent last weekend enjoying one of the biggest reasons to move to the mountains of Murphy, North Carolina. During an overnight trip to Asheville- another great destination that's only 2 hours from Murphy  I was treated to an incredible display.

The oldest mountains in the world covered in vivid shades of crimson and gold sprawled around me in every direction.

We took the scenic route through the Nantahala National Forest, a two lane road that follows the Nantahala River, where scenes like this await around every curve in the road.  The white water rafters weren't out, but there were plenty of … (2 comments)

north carolina mountain living: Hurricanes? Blizzards? Not in the Mountains of Murphy, North Carolina - 09/05/09 01:44 PM
With so many of our residents coming from Florida, there's a great deal of interest in hurricane tracking here in Murphy, North Carolina this time of the year.  Most of us have relatives and friends in the Sunshine state, some of us still have homes there.  And those of us who live here full time now, the "half-backs" (or "Floridiots" as a few of the locals call us) give thanks that the days of nailing plywood over our windows and the nights of watching Weather Channel updates are over.
One of the joys of living in these southern … (0 comments)

north carolina mountain living: Hummingbirds in the Mountains of Murphy, North Carolina - 08/27/09 10:10 AM

The part-time residents have come back to our mountains in Murphy, North Carolina and a couple of them have begun hanging around at my place all day long.
They show up right after we settle on the deck for our morning coffee so of course we try to be good hosts and make sure they have their favorite beverage too.  And if we're doing steak or even hamburgers on the grill, there they are at dinnertime.  No matter how much we feed them, it's never enough.  And now, they're bringing the kids!

But it's great … (8 comments)

north carolina mountain living: Moving to the Mountains in Murphy, North Carolina - Part 4 of 5: Making a Living, Making a Life - 08/25/09 01:14 PM

You've found your dream home in the mountains and you'd love to make the move.  But what if you're not independently wealthy and you still need income?

A few years ago, it seemed that EVERYONE moving here decided to get a real estate license so they could make the big bucks.  There are great opportunities in our market for those who have sales experience coupled with the desire to work hard.  But as many ex-agents have found, it's not as easy to make a living in real estate today as it was a couple of years ago.

north carolina mountain living: Moving to the Mountains in Murphy, NC - Part 1 of 5: Are You Ready for Small Town Life? - 08/22/09 02:02 PM
Seven years ago, I sold my concession at the Miami Arena, packed up my husband and two youngest children and moved to a cabin on 20 acres of land here in the mountains of Murphy, North Carolina.

And I'm not alone.  Every day, people walk into the cozy log cabin that is my real estate office, eager to leave the hot, crowded cities in Florida for the simpler pace of life in a picturesque small town.  The locals have a pet name for people like me - they call us Half-Backs, since so many of us moved from the … (2 comments)

When you're decorating your home for mountain living in Murphy, NC, be sure to visit Antiquities of Murphy  at 40 Valley River Avenue in the downtown shopping district.

When I moved to Murphy,  many of my favorite photographs and art prints just didn't fit my idea of rustic decor for a mountain cabin. I wasn't willing to pack away my treasured pieces and replace everything.  Then I stopped in at Antiquities of Murphy and met owner Tonya O'Sullivan.  Over the last few years, she has matted and reframed many of my favorite photographs to suit the more casual atmosphere of my home, showed me how to showcase new finds in a warm, … (0 comments)
