Congress' plan to assist homeowners in trouble was likely to be utilized by about 400,000 borrowers.  When plans started rolling out earlier this year, 2.6 million loans were in distress.  Currently, more than 3 million are at significant risk, and it's expected that about 3 million more will face late payments just in the next year.

Wow.  I thought we had weathered the brunt of the storm on this issue.  This is really just the beginning.  It appears to me now that our economic downturn will linger on longer than initially thought.  Even with home prices stabilizing or rising, all these defaulted loans will just be a drag on the economy.
