creativity: True creativity excites and inspires! - 03/18/12 07:08 AM
Stark canvas on the easel waits,As crayons lurk and pigments fade,Forlorn, abandoned by the MuseNo hand to craft, no brush to use.                  (R weisser 2012)
Creativity is a fleeting quality. On some days inspiration gushes forth like a geyser, on other days it may be more of a slow drip.
And there is a marked difference between technical proficiency and creativity. One may have all of the skills and attributes needed to execute an artistic endeavor, but may lack the creative element that sets the work apart and elevates it to a higher … (23 comments)

creativity: What do you do when you hit the blog “wall?” - 07/12/11 07:44 AM

After writing a daily blog post for over 1500 consecutive days, I can tell you from personal experience that there are times when the words do not flow freely.
The brain freezes, the coffee cools, and the curse of the blank screen stare takes over as I attempt to muddle through the mire of meaningless mentation.
But for me, maintaining discipline is an absolute obligation. The daily regimen is an essential part of my lead generation, and it also provides an outlet for my creative impulses.
So I write for me as much as for anybody else. My day is … (23 comments)

creativity: Do you play the song that everybody knows or your own original material? - 05/18/11 08:25 AM
I play in a band that just returned from a whirlwind tour of Coweta County’s watering holes and retirement centers. We are NOT in it for the money. We do it for fun and to hone our craft and for the sheer love of music.
But there is always a dilemma when performing in public. Should you cover old standards, or should you play your own material?
The answer usually is that you should do a little of both. You want to play some songs that people recognize and add your own special touches.
And you’ll also benefit by interspersing some … (16 comments)

creativity: Our world is a figment of our own interpretation! - 04/07/11 08:32 PM

Tall ensigns with their fields unfurledO’er looking-glass reflecting pools.Battalions at the ready standWaiting for the wind’s command.                     R Weisser 2011
There are times when a photograph expresses more than a simple depiction of reality. Visual stimulation often provokes emotions deep within the psyche.
Technical proficiency alone rarely stirs the soul. It takes creativity and invention to elevate the observer to a new level of aesthetic awareness.
We all see the world through the eyes of our own minds. In reality, our own interpretations of our surroundings are all that really matter.
But … (8 comments)

creativity: Sometimes “going with the flow” takes you straight to the bottom! - 01/30/11 09:19 AM

We are often told that we should NOT make waves, or that those that rock the boat are destined to fail. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
Quite often the pack mentality crushes creativity and squelches excellence. And the chances of being noticed as an individual worthy of consideration are diminished.
Because our unique value proposition is what separates us from the norm and defines us as innovators or leaders in our field. If that means churning up the waters a bit and swimming upstream then so be it!
Nobody ever said that achieving success was easy! Or that … (21 comments)

creativity: Creativity and marketing. There is a method to the madness! - 11/13/10 08:20 AM

I am often very surprised to hear a real estate agent say that they are not very creative. After all, real estate is a marketing business and separation marketing depends on the ability to cogitate unique ideas.
Although creativity is unique to the individual  and percolates from deep within the conscious fountainhead, the metamorphosis of transforming an idea to a successful marketing conclusion is a methodical process.
My partner at the office and I “brainstorm” every day about new ways to generate more business. And while many of the suggestions that are thrown into the mix are summarily discarded, some … (74 comments)

creativity: What constitutes art? That may depend on the individual that you are asking! - 08/07/10 08:37 AM

I had a serious discussion with a New York artist yesterday about art in general and photography in particular. It was a philosophical expounding on the definition of the word “art.”
And as I presented my views, an as he countered, I came to realize that art and creativity as a concept is unique to the individual, and that every artist has her or her own vision of what actually constitutes good art.
Some of the most famous artists in history are those that ignored convention and conformity and plunged into the unknown.
Perhaps the only physical measure of quality … (21 comments)

creativity: The rationalization of the creative process. Is giving in to commercial concerns selling out? - 08/24/09 07:19 AM
The debate about the reasons that one creates is as passionate as the reasons that one chooses a spouse. Everyone expects to get something different in return for their efforts!
But in a world of instant information dissemination, the balance between art and function is usually tipped one way or the other. And it's up to the creator of the work to decide the manner in which their craft will evolve.
But true creativity is NOT the rehashing of readily available facts and figures. While academic treatises usually contain useful summaries of empirical data, they are rarely considered art and are … (18 comments)

creativity: Inspiration comes in many sizes, shapes and colors. - 03/26/09 06:50 PM
Plumage wafts o'er blades of greenFrail feathers float on tufts unseenTo dance on breezy vernal streamsA pastel petaled font of dreams.                                     (R Weisser)
Sometimes inspiration comes from simple things. A color, a fragrance, or even a taste can be the source of a great idea for a recipe, or a new product, or even a great literary work.
But inspiration without motivation falls short of invention. It is not enough to be inspired; action is required to set the wheels of creation in motion.
So when the Muses stir the soul, keep in mind that passivity is the damper of passion.
