life: Tumbling along the watercourse of life! - 04/15/12 07:18 AM
In tumbling, splashing cataracts,O’re boulders flocked in velvet dress,The ancient sculptor carves the trackYet never finished, never rests!                  (R Weisser 2012)
Life is always a work in progress.  And despite careful planning and diligent efforts, things can often go awry without a moment’s notice.
These trials can test the mettle of even the most stalwart soul. No one is immune from adversity.
There are many things in life that we cannot control. But we can take charge of our own response to these less than desirable circumstances.
And that is the true definition … (4 comments)

life: Autumn and the cycle of life! - 10/23/11 09:35 AM
In flocks aloft and spinning madDescend to drifts of fragrant frondsThat dim and wane, then fade awayTransformed to earth in carpets laid.                         (R Weisser 2011)
As Autumn quietly retreats and yields to the certainty of Winter, I often reflect on the Falls of years past.
For some reason, my natural clock rhythm seems to be benchmarked by Autumn, and I have a special fondness for the “closing” of each yearly cycle.
By historical standards, this year has NOT lived up to expectations. And although there were some extreme highlights, the … (47 comments)

life: It’s Sunday morning and yet I don’t feel like preaching! - 07/18/10 09:40 AM
This is about the fourth blog post that I have written this morning. After reading the previous three, I wasn’t pleased with the overall timbre of the content and set them aside for future consideration.
It wasn’t that the discarded articles were not well written, it just seemed to me that they came across as rather “preachy!” And while I am not adverse to pontification in general, I’m just not feeling the need to do so today.
As I sit here watching the juvenile hummingbirds vie for the sweet nectar in the feeder, I can only think that life is good … (16 comments)

life: Snowstorms and the great cosmic “coincidence.” Some Saturday morning thoughts about weather and life in general! - 02/06/10 07:59 AM

I have been watching the Weather Channel all morning. I have family and friends scattered all over the Mid-Atlantic States and they are being buried under more snow than they have ever seen from a single storm.
And being the scientist that I am, I always get to thinking about the precarious balance of factors that allows our planet to be temperate enough to support life as we know it.
It just so happens that our good earth is exactly the correct distance from the sun, and is tilted at just the right angle on its axis, and has just the right … (23 comments)

life: Some simple Saturday thoughts about the fleeting nature of life in general. - 11/07/09 06:55 AM
It often seems that I do not have my priorities in order. I work many long hours and sneak in a few hours of “relaxation” in here and there, but even during those supposedly rest times, work is swirling around in my head.
The world is a big and beautiful place, and I have seen very little of it, as I prefer to remain in close proximity to home. It always seems that the simple everydsay tasks preoccupy my time!
And there are a lot of things that I have “put off until next year” for over twenty years now, and … (25 comments)

life: It's a fact of life: You can't move forward if you keep looking back. - 02/13/09 05:35 PM

This is not going to be a long diatribe, I'll keep it short and sweet:
You can't move forward if you keep looking back.
You can't undo mistakes of the past, you can only accept them, learn from them and move forward. There is no "Back to the Future" ability to go back, change your actions, and alter the future forever.
Never let the "What might have been" affect the "What is," because while resolution may be important to you, it may be hurtful or troublesome to those that care for you now.
Life is a chronological series of events, … (29 comments)

life: Wow! I've been bestowed a whole new day of life! Time to get out there and face it head-on. - 10/11/08 07:20 AM
It's early Saturday morning as I write this. Even though I didn't get to sleep until 2:00 A.M. this morning, I still got up at 6:30 like I always do. I am, after all, a creature of habit. So although I am very sleepy and have no pressing obligations, I continue with my usual morning rituals.
One of those morning rituals, of course, is penning an entry in my blog journal. It's something I do every morning, although sometimes the words do not flow automatically. I have come to the point where I consider my readers as I write, and I … (38 comments)

life: The life journey takes us to some wonderful places ... if we let it! - 10/04/08 07:36 PM
If you have been following the news lately, you know that we are living in troubled times. Here in the Southeast, we have been hot especially hard with the economic downturn, the mortgage crisis and the lost of investments. Add to that a gasoline and a water shortage, and it's hard to go about doing business as usual.
But our life journey is but a blip in the timeline of the entire scheme of things. Our role is an insignificant tremor in the rumbling quakes of history. At some point, we must realize that there are many things greater than ourselves.

life: The joy and benefits of NOT sleeping! - 03/12/08 06:40 AM
Think about this...not sleeping has its advantages!
1) You get an extra 6-8 hours a day to do anything you want! Than can be up to 56 hours a week or 248 hours a month. That's a over 10 full 24 hour days a month free just for not sleeping.
2) You can be catatonic or even comatose during the day without taking mind-numbing drugs or drinking yourself into oblivion. That translates to true cash savings!
3) You can drive long distances painlessly without any recollection of how you got where you currently are! Sort of like having your own chauffeur.
4) Food becomes important … (22 comments)

life: Kids and computers ... how smart are they ... really? - 02/25/08 02:23 PM
"People try to put us down (Talkin' 'bout my Generation)
Just becuz we get around (Talkin' 'bout my Generation)" The Who
It really gripes me that you hear kids today talking about adults and their inability to master technology? And it maddens me when parents tell me how good their kids are with computers, and how smart they are. Well, some of it may be true. If you are having problems with any of the following, why not consult the nearest 13 year old!
1) Getting passwords to pornography sites.2) Finding license keys for pirated software.3) Obtaining credit card numbers and expiration … (4 comments)
