new years day: Days of Auld Lang Syne - 12/31/13 08:58 AM
As the final minutes of 2013 trickle through the neck of the hourglass, it is good to pause to stop and take a look back.
Life is a lot like a hike up a steep mountain. The further along you get on the journey, the more there is to see when you turn around.
With every step, the starting point becomes more distant and harder to discern as it fades farther and farther into the horizon.
But looking forward the path is clear! And although there are many more miles behind me than lie ahead, the road is clear and visibility … (9 comments)

new years day: New Years and Time Zones! - 12/31/12 09:17 AM
I had a friend from New Zealand wish me a Happy New Year this morning. After all, it was already 2013 across the International Date Line!
Here in the Eastern Time Zone, our first glimpse of the New Year coincides with the celebration at Times Square New York, and so we were raised on dropping spheres and the strains of Guy Lombardo conducting Auld Lang Syne!
Last year my band played at a New Years party in Alabama. Although a scant 50 mile drive away, our band had to play an extra hour until 2012 made its way to the Central … (2 comments)

new years day: Should Auld Acquaintance be Forgot? - 12/31/11 09:08 PM
It’s nearly 5:00 A.M. and I just got back from a New Year’s Eve gig in Alabama. It is now very late (or early, depending on how you look at it) and I’m tired. These all-nighters are hard enough when you are young, but at my age they are bone wearying.
It didn’t help that the American Legion was on Central Standard Time either, because 2012 actually arrived there an hour later there inOpelika than it did here inCowetaCountyGeorgia, which is on Eastern Standard Time.
Exactly at midnight, we dutifully played “Auld Lang Syne” as the audience rose for New Year’s … (14 comments)

new years day: Starting the New Year Off with a bang! - 01/01/11 01:21 AM
2011 is finally here, and as we recover from the revelry of the celebrations, it’s time to sober up and get back to work!
I have always felt that the first two weeks of January set the tone for the rest of the year. With the holidays behind us and as the “ordinariness” of the dark days of winter descend upon us, there is nothing to distract us from getting our businesses moving full speed ahead.
After enduring several years of extreme challenges in the real estate market, the prospect of what lies ahead is far lass daunting. Those of us … (19 comments)

new years day: “Fast away the old year passes!” - 12/26/10 03:02 AM

Now the Christmas has come and gone, it’s time for the next “big” holiday, which is coincidentally the last celebration of 2010 and also the first “red letter day” of 2011.
A new year is more than just a number. Every January 1 we have the opportunity for a fresh start. And it’s important to get out of the starting box running.
It doesn’t matter if 2010 was your best year ever, or your worst year, or somewhere in between. On next Saturday, it will be history.
I don’t think that anyone ever expects a New Year to be a … (14 comments)

new years day: Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and ne'er brought to mind? - 12/31/08 11:04 AM
I have to admit it. Every year I tear up when I hear the sweet strains of Auld Lang Syne. As we greet the New Year with great anticipation, we cannot help but look back and remember those that are no longer with us.
I miss my mother and father the most. They enjoyed a good party, and New Year's Eve was no exception. When I was growing up we always had a New Year's party at our house, and all of the neighbors would stop in for a beverage and hugs, and all of our relatives would settle in and … (38 comments)

new years day: Happy New Year to everyone ...here are some interesting points to ponder about the end of 2008! - 12/30/08 10:49 PM
Well, well, well. Another new year is just around the corner. Having been through 55 of these momentous events, I can say with some degree of certainty, that this one will be greeted with little fanfare or celebration.
After all, there is not a lot of reason to jump up and down with glee. The new year carries with it quite a bit of baggage that must be reckoned with.
1) Another tax year is over, and returns and taxes are due. The months of accounting and reconciling become a shadow hanging over every aspect of ordinary life until the blessed … (38 comments)
