preparation: Putting things off to the last minute isn’t necessarily the least stressful strategy! - 08/08/10 12:49 AM

When I was a young man in school, when it came to assignments, there were two kinds of kids. Those that would start the job right away and get it finished, and those that waited until the last minute before the deadline to get the job done.
And while each method was ultimately as effective as the other, those that procrastinated always seemed to thrive  in the midst off all of the stress. I tended to fall into that category.
But as I have matured, I have continually gravitated towards the notion that getting tasks completed ahead of time can … (20 comments)

preparation: Five miles is a long way on a steep and rocky trail! Always be prepared while you are enjoying the outdoors. - 02/23/10 11:03 AM

I have some good friends that spent a long weekend in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At some point, they decided that it would be nice to experience the park up close and personal with a hike to the very popular Abrams Falls in the Cades Cover area of the park.
It’s two and a half miles from the trailhead to the falls, and of course it’s exactly the same distance back to the parking area. And the trail is considered “moderate,” with some elevation changes, and the typical roots and rocks that you have to step over on … (15 comments)

preparation: Is panic and frustration part of the holiday fun? If so, I’m in for a boring season! - 11/20/09 11:30 PM

Unlike many years in the past, I started my holiday shopping and decorating early and I am essentially “done.” I did a little here and there, and now the house is ready and all I have left to do is mail out my cards which are already stamped and addressed.
But instead of feeling smug and satisfied, I’m really quite bored. It seems that not having the underlying pangs of panic takes away from some of the holiday “excitement!”
There is such a thing as being over-prepared. It’s not my nature. Back in school, so long ago, my assignments were … (25 comments)

preparation: Well, it looks like I've done it again. Another computer crash has rocked my world! - 09/16/09 11:34 PM
My trusty notebook suddenly died yesterday. First the infamous blue screen popped up, and then nothing. It appears as if the hard drive is gone for good,
I am generally prepared for such eventualities. But the sudden loss of an important tool can be disruptive at the least, and devastating at the worst. And even though I am typing this post on a backup computer, everything is more difficult because it's not set up the way I want it and I don't have all of my usual tools at my disposal.
So everything that I do today will be harder, and … (25 comments)

preparation: I love Sunday evenings, and I look forward the week ahead! - 03/15/09 11:26 AM
Sunday evenings have always been a special time for me. I like to take a few hours to both reflect on the past seven days, and to spend some time preparing for the upcoming work week.
I also might finish up some weekend projects, or do some previously neglected paperwork. But regardless of what I do, the pace is relaxed and easy, and I will leisurely perform the tasks at hand.
I already know how the day will end, snoozing in my recliner with a cat snuggled on my lap. The television provides white noise in the background as we drop … (21 comments)

preparation: We never know what's in store for us around the bend until we get there! - 01/10/09 10:52 PM
Life is full of uncertainties. And despite our best efforts to maintain full control of our destinies, we often find ourselves facing an unexpected obstacle to our ultimate goals.
Our response to these impediments determines whether we will either continue forward, or whether we will be derailed from our track to success.
Having contingency plans prepared in advance is one way to easily negotiate our progress. Better to be proactive in the beginning than to be forced to be reactive at a critical juncture during our journey.
So although we can't predict the future, we can prepare for multiple scenarios with different … (35 comments)

preparation: The cold weather is moving in and it's time to "put up" for the winter. - 10/20/08 11:35 PM
We have just had our first cold snap here in the south. Patches of scattered frost and I'm having to think about turning on the furnace (it's freezing in here!) Fall is in full force and winter is just around the corner.
Back in the days of self-sufficiency, fall was a time to complete preparations for the winter ahead. It was necessary to make sure that enough food and fuel was "put up" to survive the lean months ahead. Survival depended on a care allocation of resources spread out over the entire year!
Do we think about our lives and are … (38 comments)

preparation: I just walked away from a potential listing. - 02/23/08 12:31 PM

I usually do my homework. When I set up a listing appointment, I always pull all of the deeds and tax records on the subject property. First of all, I need to know who owns the property, and who is required to sign the listing. Second, I need to know how much is owed on the property. In Georgia, we do that by examining the "deed to secure debt," or security deed. You can pretty much determine an estimated payoff by the amount secured by the property, and the date it was executed.
But today I goofed. I missed a second mortgage … (9 comments)
