railroads: Want to trace local history? Try following the railroad line! - 02/04/12 09:46 AM
I love railroads and I love history. And fortunately, the two are so interconnected that you can’t appreciate one without having a fondness for the other.
Most of the main railroad lines in America were constructed in the 19th Century. Any town fortunate enough to be situated in the path of the railroad enjoyed a sudden burst of prosperity.
On the other hand, many villages that were bypassed soon faded into obscurity.
The availability of transportation became a necessary component of community survival.
Many modern railroads follow the same right-of-way as their 19th Century counterparts. And most are punctuated with bits … (8 comments)

railroads: Train watching! It isn't just for old folks anymore. - 11/27/10 08:11 PM

I have always loved trains.  The house I was raised in Western Pennsylvania was just a block from the tracks, and we often watched the trains roll on by heading for points unknown.
As seen through the eyes of a child, nothing could compare to these iron behemoths barreling along the rails. On a good day, you would get a wave from both the engineer and the conductor in the caboose.
In the modern computer age of today, two things have taken the art of train watching to a whole new level: digital photography and the Internet. You can take … (15 comments)

railroads: This train has got the disappearing railroad blues...and I'll miss it! - 01/04/09 07:59 PM
I love everything about railroads! I love the feel of tons of iron and steel making the earth tremble by virtue of their sheer immensity. I love the smell of creosote and grease, and the distant sound of the horns blaring as they approach crossing grades!
I love the appearance of mile after mile of perfectly parallel rails running off into the distance, floating on a bed of crushed rock and held in place with square spikes! There is also a magnificent serpentine quality of a long string of rolling stock meandering through the countryside.
Our country expanded during the industrial … (36 comments)

railroads: There's something about trains! A collage of train photos for enthusiasts everywhere! - 12/05/08 04:59 PM
The serpent slides ‘cross gleaming steelShrill shrieks emit as flange grinds rail,The sinewy procession traipses,Meanders burgeoning with freight!                     ( R Weisser )
There is an intrinsic aura surrounding trains and railroads in general. Perhaps it's something about the two parallel rails leading off into infinity that captures the imagination.
Or is it the cacophony of sounds and sensations that accompany the passing of a locomotive and rolling stock that make them seem alive?
Trains are a part of Americana, and since they move more freight on less fuel than any other mode of land transportation, they are "green" as well, and good … (18 comments)

Five model GE C40-9W (Dash 9-40CW) Locomotives, headed by number 9789 were photographed June 26, 2008 in Whitesburg Georgia.
This section of the Norfolk Southern line serves two coal powered electric generation plants. One at Plant Yates in Coweta County and the Wansley Power Plant in Carrollton.
The line also serves a lumber yard in Newnan and a packaging plant in Senoia GA, where the trackage now terminates.
Coweta County Georgia is served by the Norfolk Southern Railroad and the CSX Railroad.
If you have plans to move an industry to the Atlanta Area that depends on access to rail, please … (6 comments)

railroads: Our American Railroads are lean and green technological dreams! - 06/23/08 07:06 AM
As many of you already know, I love railroads and everything about them. I love the long slender perspective of the rails, the smell of the creosote, and the trembling of the earth as a mammoth locomotive approaches.
Railroading is an old technology, employing the concept of minimizing friction by having a very minute amount of contact between the steel wheels and the steel rails. This allows more tonnage to be moved with less fuel consumption. Amazing, this now ancient technology is green too!
Did you know that the motors in modern diesel locomotives are actually electric? These huge truck mounted … (26 comments)
