success: How do you measure success? - 09/01/11 01:41 AM
How do you measure success? There are as many answers to that question as there are respondents to the inquiry.
Is it measured by money? If that is the case, then a lottery winner can become successful overnight.
Is it measured by awards? While awards may connote recognition or achievement, they do not always reflect success. Many an award winner has struggled while attempting to reconcile notoriety with success.
Is it measured by production numbers? While tangible statistics offer an indicator of actual production, it does not necessarily coincide with success. Many top producers find themselves victims of their own tunnel-vision … (12 comments)

success: Are you getting the job done or are you just staying busy? - 07/07/11 12:38 AM
Many, many years ago I worked on a construction crew. For a short time we had a helper named Ron.
Ron was a hard worker, but he never quite understood what we were trying to accomplish. Ron thought that if he did what he was told and stayed busy that he was doing a good job.
But Ron wasn’t doing a good job. If someone asked Ron for a two-by-four, he would obligingly walk over to the lumber stack and grab one.
However, if another carpenter yelled for a piece of plywood, Ron would drop the two-by-four in his tracks and … (66 comments)

success: You did a great job! And now we want you to “top it!” - 12/16/10 11:50 PM
Many years ago there was a television commercial about an employee that had invented his company’s top selling tire!
He was called before the board of directors where he received the accolades he expected. And after they concluded the kudos, they added one thing:
”Now, we want you to top it!” There is never any comfort derived from resting on your laurels. Yesterdays achievements fade away like melting snow, and the “what have you done for me lately” attitude dominates the workplace.
And as the bar is raised ever higher, “topping it” becomes quite the daunting challenge!

success: Sometimes the climb to the top is fraught with peril, and it may require helping hands to play it safe. - 05/19/09 11:55 PM
We all want to ascend in the ranks of our respective professions. It is, after all, the reason that we continue to read and to study about new ways of conducting business in a technological age.
But that's not to say that there will not be any bumps in the road ahead. Nor does it suggest that risks should not be undertaken.
There is rarely a golden staircase that will take you to the pinnacle of achievement, More often than not, it is metaphorically closer to a rickety ladder propped precariously against a wall.
And while one can go it alone, … (15 comments)

success: Instead of attacking your best competition, why not try to learn their secrets of success? - 05/08/09 07:28 AM
As May's buds burst from winter's sleepEmerging primped with fragrance sweetAnd beckons every passerbyTo gorge on scent, as summer's nigh!           (R. Weisser)
If I have learned one thing in life, it is that I have a lot to learn! And while it is true that I have gained a lot of knowledge and even more experience over the years, there is always more wisdom that can be absorbed and incorporated in our life's journey.
There are those that attempt to denigrate or tear down others that have succeeded, operating under the false premise that their own position can be elevated by … (72 comments)

success: Don't let your success be derailed by forces beyond your control! - 04/14/09 12:11 AM
Running a business in itself is hard enough. Even in the best of times there is a precarious balance between success and failure.
If you add to the mix the necessity of having to deal with unprecedented external economic forces, the quest becomes one more of survival than success. Many are just trying to hang on for dear life and weather the storm.
The problem is; this isn't a passing cyclone, it's a major climate shift. Many of the changes in the marketplace are permanent and will never revert to the former status quo.
So it is important to accept the fact … (30 comments)

success: Measuring success in life. The formula may be more complicated than you think! - 08/24/08 12:45 AM
It's a fair question. When we look back at our lives and careers, we often think of different episodes in our saga as successes or failures. It's an interesting analysis, because of lot of our self worth really depends on what we consider important in life.
There has to be a benchmark established. We can then measure ourselves against this standard, and draw a reasonable conclusion based on facts.
So what is really important to you? What basis would you use to measure yourself?
Is it money? That's an easy one. If you measure success by the amount of money you … (25 comments)
