winter weather: The calm AFTER the storm

No gale persists, no tempest breathes The snow-white coverlet recedes, From Southern climes the air is warmed And now the calm beyond the storm! (R Weisser 2014) The interesting thing about winter storms in the South is that they wreak havoc for a day or two or three and then they are relegated to the status of a historical curiosity for decades to come. And while our friends in colder regions might chuckle at our unnatural reaction to natural phenomenon the truth of the matter is that these occurrences are so few and far between that (28 comments)
winter weather: Getting into the holiday spirit is easier when it’s freezing!

Growing up in Western Pennsylvania, the holiday season was frequently punctuated with snow and always accompanied by cold weather. Here in Newnan Georgia, our winter weather hinges on the wind. When the wind blows from the cold Canadian North, we have typical winter weather. If it blows from the South, we have warm breezes from the Gulf of Mexico Should the two collide, we have a blizzard! Tonight, it is just very cold, which seems to make the holiday lights burn a little brighter. After a nice bone-chilling walk around the neighborhood, it’s nice to retire to the family room with (7 comments)
winter weather: There’s snow business like snow business!

I heard an interesting item yesterday on the news. The reporter stated that for the first time since records have been kept, that there was at least some snow on the ground somewhere in 49 of the 50 United States! Hawaii was the only exception. And although most of us are weary of winter weather stories and are ready for warmer temperatures, that really is an amazing declaration. Even Florida had some snow on the ground in it’s northern region. I’m not suggesting that we are in the midst of a mini ice-age but even the most cynical observer would have (28 comments)
