More than ever 1099s should be filed timely - 12/06/09 10:23 PM
With a large deficit the government will be looking for ways to collect additional taxes and penalties. The due date for 1099s was changed in 2008 to February 15th. The minimum amount hasn’t changed, 1099 filing requirements If you company has paid any individuals or businesses more than $600 for rent or services, a 1099 must be filed with the IRS. This includes attorneys, contractors, printing, repairs and other services. When parts are included with a service, these parts must be included in the amount reported on form 1099. The deadline for filing 1099s is February 15th. Exemptions: Payments made

Christmas Ship comes to Seattle Again - 12/04/09 10:56 PM
Seattle will once again be hosting the Christmas ship cruises of the Seattle Waterfront. Cruises will be offered from December 1st thru December 23rd. Special discount tickets are available on some cruises from December 2nd thru December 16th. There will be Christmas music, bonfires on shore, Santa and other activities to entertain the whole family. We have personally taken the tour in years past and enjoyed it a lot. You may want to review your employee vs. contractor relationships There has been growing concern over the years that some businesses are inappropriately classifying employees and independent contractors. This is a concern to government for several reasons. Some businesses fail to send out 1099s and some contractors fail to report their income. There are Cash flow concerns. Employment taxes are required to be paid much sooner than estimated tax payments required of contractors. Tax rules are different for each type of income and the IRS may collect less than the required amount. Beginning February 2010,

Banks are holding onto their cash reserves and lending less - 12/03/09 12:21 AM
Two articles recently caught my eye. The first was an article by the Washington Post dated November 25th titled “2.8% drop in lending is largest since 1984.” Apparently U.S. banks reduced their lending by 2.8% in the third quarter of this year this represents a reduction of 210 Billion dollars less money available for lending. Not a shock of and by itself though it has implications on the general ability for home owners and businesses to borrow money. It also may slow the country’s economic recovery.
