Video [#4] - Bringing Motion to Stills - 02/25/11 08:55 PM
Are you ready to continue on in our Video Series classes? In my previous articles (you can go back via that link), I have mentioned that it is not required that you use video editing software before you post a video. For instance, you could record a single continuous clip and post it - simple. However, video editing lets you take your videos a notch higher and as you will see a few basic tasks are really not at all that difficult.
So let's take the case of a home tour video. You have gone out and recorded clips of you … (27 comments)

Screencast [#1] - ActiveRain Photo Properties & Hyperlinks - 02/21/11 06:59 PM
I haven't done screencasts in a while, but I've wanted to get back into doing them. Here is a question that came up today in an email, so I thought I'd do a class in screencast format to demonstrate some of the points instead of just writing about them.
What are some of the ways you can size a photo or graphic after you have inserted it into your ActiveRain blog? How would you go about creating a hyperlink for the photo so it could be clicked? Are there any differences of note between the most used browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome). … (56 comments)

Graphics For Bloggers [#5] - Snapshot and Crop - 02/13/11 09:30 AM
I'm in the midst of writing my Video Series, but I'm jumping back to my Graphics for Bloggers Series for a day to help you with a graphics skill that we will need on the next video lesson. I am going to demonstrate how to do screen captures AND get them cropped to the right aspect ratio so that it will be all ready to insert as new clips into your video timeline.

So let's take the case of a home tour video. You have gone out and recorded clips of you touring the house. As a lead-in to help … (69 comments)

Have you subscribed to Will Curry yet? Take my advice, go to his Will's ActiveRain blog now and do so.

Picasa Series [#12] Watermarking Photos - 02/08/11 01:51 PM

If you have been following my Picasa Series, you'll know by now what an amazing all-around photo app that Picasa is (and free too!). This class will be about watermarking your photos. Watermarking is the overlaying of text onto your photo to dissuade others from using your work without your permission. Any photo on the internet can easily be saved by others and used in their own pages. Even if you were to go to the effort of programming and disabling the right-click/save-as option, there is still screen capture command that is all too simple to do.
Watermarking then is … (34 comments)

Shutter Story Sundays (#11) - Kenmare Bay - 02/06/11 08:47 AM
Usually when we go to Ireland, we make our home base in Killarney (County Kerry) which is in the southwest part of the country. A little ways south of Killarney on what is known as the "Ring of Kerry" is the town of Kenmare. From there a very scenic Kenmare Bay extends out into the Atlantic Ocean on the west. From Kenmare you can book a day trip on a small sightseeing boat where you go out into the bay enjoying the picturesque hills and wildlife all around. The seals were our favorite. Irish weather is sun and showers but yields … (24 comments)

Video Series [#3] - Have You Checked Your Aspect Ratio Lately? - 02/05/11 11:30 AM
In videography (and photography), there is a concept that you need to be familiar with and it is called aspect ratio. An aspect ratio is the the comparison or ratio of the width to the height. In digital camera photography, most shots are in a 4:3 (4 by 3) ratio. This means that the width is just slightly bigger than it's height (1.33, or 33%). Older televisions also used this ratio. Have you noticed that HD and widescreen are now 'the norm'. The aspect ratio for widescreen is 16:9 (16 by 9, 1.78 aspect). The width is now much wider than … (27 comments)

Video Series [#2] - So You Want to Do Video? Let's Talk - 02/04/11 01:15 PM
In my previous post, I introduced you to some of the basic concepts and terminology of the video editing process. I haven't shown you how to do the edits yet, but we will get there. The comments on my first post provided some good feedback and I appreciate that. Before we get into editing video (in a future post) let's step back and talk about what your goals and expectations should be in working with video.
Video is going to be an excellent way for you to stand out in the crowd. If you don't think video is a popular format, … (41 comments)
