video series: Video Series [#1] - Introduction - 09/22/12 11:59 PM

[originally posted 2/1/11 - updated edit of content 9/23/12]
If you are investigating how to expand your online presence in effective ways, then you should consider video. A recent ActiveRain video contest got a lot of people thinking about this medium and also diving in with their first attempts. Great! Now that you have done so, it probably opened up a whole new set of technical questions...
and you know those are the kinds of questions that brings you to Craig's Classroom! :)
You don't have to dive into video with a gigantic investment. Cameras are now reasonably priced. And … (111 comments)

video series: Video Series [#10] - Custom Sizing YouTube Embeds - 10/30/11 03:43 AM
Today's video lesson is going to look at considerations you should use when creating an embedded video from YouTube. There is a little mathematics involved, but don't run away, I'll give you the answers you need!
We're going to use one of our VBloggers experts Debb Janes to illustrate some points (thanks Debb for volunteering hehe)!
The goal at the end of the day is to embed a YouTube video into an ActiveRain blog post. There are several things to consider to get this perfect and it is EASY to miss a few important points. Let me show you what I … (60 comments)

video series: Video Series [#9] - Ideas about Intros - 04/30/11 10:13 AM
This is not really going to be a teaching post. I just wanted to check in and give a little glimpse into something I have on "the drawing board." I've been thinking lately about videos that our VBloggers group is creating. You know we are learning lots from each other there! Some in the group are frequent video bloggers, take Nyssa or Steve as just two examples. What I find interesting foremost is of course their content, it is interesting and relevant to the consumer and their market. Each of these vloggers has used an intro clip before the main video. … (75 comments)

video series: Video [#8] - YouTube Basics Quiz - 03/13/11 09:27 AM

Now we've got some good momentum in video! (if you haven't been watching this Video Series, you can use that link to go back... also if you have even the slightest interest in video or seeing what others are doing, please join our VBloggers group). After watching lots of videos lately, I see some common things that many may miss out on. I want to hit some basics in YouTube in this post - here's a checklist for you - Quiz: Did you Know These Five Points?

video series: Video [#7] - Transitions - 03/11/11 06:04 AM
Let's take our video series posts now onto the topic of transitions. When you are in a video editing app (e.g. Windows Live Movie Maker, iMovie, or other similar app), you have the option of how one clip leads into the next one. If you do nothing at all, it will be a straight cut, in the blink of an eye from one video clip to the next. If you are doing several shots of the same subject, perhaps different points of view, straight cuts are fine. However, if you are changing subject, say from exterior to interior of house, then … (24 comments)

video series: Video [#6] - YouTube Captioning - 03/04/11 10:23 AM

Funny how sometimes things come in waves. I had been reading recently about Google doing automated transcriptions of YouTube files... Then I got an email from a subscriber asking me for info on captioning a video for hearing impaired... then just this week Brad Andersohn mentioned captioning in YouTube in his most excellent video webinar on Zillow Academy, highly recommended - be sure and go check out his schedule. (but only after you first finish reading my post, of course!)
So that was enough, I had to figure it out now! So I did.
I recently did a screencast where … (55 comments)

video series: Video [#5] - Project Setup - 03/01/11 02:00 AM
Before we go too much further with video editing tasks, let's talk today about getting your video project set up properly. I want to cover a few concepts that will be helpful to consider. This is part 5 in the Video Class Series and that link will let you go back and catch up if you missed the previous classes.
First of all, let's talk about file organization. When you upload the source files from your video camera, you need to have a logical and organized way to save the files. Usually, you will have some sort of main "videos" folder … (36 comments)

video series: Video [#4] - Bringing Motion to Stills - 02/25/11 12:55 PM
Are you ready to continue on in our Video Series classes? In my previous articles (you can go back via that link), I have mentioned that it is not required that you use video editing software before you post a video. For instance, you could record a single continuous clip and post it - simple. However, video editing lets you take your videos a notch higher and as you will see a few basic tasks are really not at all that difficult.
So let's take the case of a home tour video. You have gone out and recorded clips of you … (27 comments)

video series: Video Series [#3] - Have You Checked Your Aspect Ratio Lately? - 02/05/11 03:30 AM
In videography (and photography), there is a concept that you need to be familiar with and it is called aspect ratio. An aspect ratio is the the comparison or ratio of the width to the height. In digital camera photography, most shots are in a 4:3 (4 by 3) ratio. This means that the width is just slightly bigger than it's height (1.33, or 33%). Older televisions also used this ratio. Have you noticed that HD and widescreen are now 'the norm'. The aspect ratio for widescreen is 16:9 (16 by 9, 1.78 aspect). The width is now much wider than … (27 comments)

video series: Video Series [#2] - So You Want to Do Video? Let's Talk - 02/04/11 05:15 AM
In my previous post, I introduced you to some of the basic concepts and terminology of the video editing process. I haven't shown you how to do the edits yet, but we will get there. The comments on my first post provided some good feedback and I appreciate that. Before we get into editing video (in a future post) let's step back and talk about what your goals and expectations should be in working with video.
Video is going to be an excellent way for you to stand out in the crowd. If you don't think video is a popular format, … (41 comments)
