Bike Trail?

I love to ride my plain ol bike but find it hard to do so safely. I don't like busy roads and not real good on rough trails, so I sure wish I knew somewhere to ride just for fun. I do have a helmet but that is all the safety gear I have. If anyone out there is reading this and has some ideas of where to ride, close to the Greenville area, please respond.

I am riding at the beach at the end of March and of course that is always easy.

Don't you love how free you feel and how it makes you feel like a kid again. Since I am not, I don't want a lot of hills either. I did go to Furman after Thanksgiving and road for a while and that was wonderful.

Be a part of living and get out there and do something. I love to hike too.

Have you checked out the Chatooga River trail? Awesome place.

Getting laid off is scary, especially if you have a family. It's important to know how to manage your money in that situation.

Unemployment compensation is taxable
A severance package counts as taxable income, including any money you get paid for accumulated vacation or sick time. Unlike wages, no tax is withheld from unemployment pay. So make sure to hold back about a quarter of that money for taxes.

Remember this: the sooner you are able to find another job, the more that severance money will look like a huge bonus. If you can get an income stream flowing again, you can use that severance to save or attack your debt. But, again, make sure to withhold some for taxes.

Always talk to a tax professional to get the whole story.

Fall Bike Rally at Myrtle Beach

The fall bike rally gets underway tomorrow through this weekend. Due to problems in past events, police officers are taking greater measures in safety.

With new laws related to motorcycles and the rallies approved and soon to be in place in Myrtle Beach, police will attempt to inform rally attendees about changes that will be enforced beginning with the spring event.

Below is a list of questions that have been answered by Myrtle Beach police Capt. David Knipes concerning enforcement plans and additional officers that will be on patrol through the upcoming rally.

Question | What changes, if any, will be seen by attendants to the fall motorcycle rally?

Answer | We will conduct two traffic safety checkpoints addressing the accident and fatality issues.

Q. | What additional enforcement efforts will be in place during the upcoming rally?

A. | Traffic safety checkpoints. Officers also will use officer-citizen contacts to educate the motorists and others about the ordinances.

Q. | Will there be extra officers on patrol, and if so, any estimate of how many and will they be focused on any particular area?

A. | Patrol will be working at full strength Friday through Saturday. We will focus on traffic safety and noise abatement.

Q. | What should attendees remember while visiting the area for the rally?

A. | Abide by the laws, drive safely and defensively.

Q. | What should residents going about their daily routine remember during the rally?

A. | Watch out for motorcycles and others who may not be familiar with our roads and venues.

Horry County police Sgt. Robert Kegler answered similar questions about that agency's efforts.

Q. | What changes, if any, will be seen by attendants to the fall motorcycle rally from your agency's operational standpoint?

A. | There will not be any changes made from our operational standpoint. We are going to continue to run our motorcycle rally operations the same as we have in the past. We are going to continue to handle the calls for service that come in to us and make enforcement when it is deemed.

Q. | Will there be extra officers on patrol, and if so, any estimate of how many and will they be focused on any particular area?

A. | There will be extra officers on patrol throughout the rally, as there has been in the past. They will be assigned to different zones of the north and south ends of the county, and they will be there to assist the regular shift with calls for service and help out with any other issues that may arise. In addition, they will be at the different venues within their respective zones.

Q. | What should attendees remember while visiting the area for the rally?

A. | The attendees should remember that we are out there for their safety, as well as the safety of anyone else that may be visiting or living in our area. They should also remember to stay safe while they are down here having fun, and to be careful when riding on the roads.

Q. | What should residents going about their daily routine remember during the rally?

A. | The residents of Horry County should remember that they, too, need to use extra caution during the rally when driving. A motorcycle is more likely to be hidden in a blind spot of their vehicle than a car would be. Give yourself extra time to get to where you need to be, and be careful while you are out driving.

How Are the Gas Prices Affecting You?

All you hear on the news anymore is constant talk about rising gas prices and now we are facing the problem of all the stations running out of gas. Over the weekend I made an effort to notice the gas stations everywhere I went and the majority were definitely out of gas. The ones that did have gas had so many cars there that I can't even imagine having to fight all the people just to get gas!

How is this affecting you and your family? Are you finding ways to conserve gas or do you find yourself still going and doing the same things you normally do?

What about those gas prices???!!!!!

We are just curious what the gas prices are like over the U.S. Here is South Carolina, there is such a huge variation in prices! It is really amazing!! On one corner you will see prices at $3.99 a gallon and then half a block away another store will be selling it for $5.29 a gallon!!

I know all of us will be so thankful when these prices come back down!! It is especially difficult on those who have jobs traveling all the time. I can't imagine continuously being on the road and having to keep my car filled with gas!

We thought we'd add a little humor to your day!! Hope it worked!! If you have a moment, please let us know how the prices are where you are!

We all go through different seasons in our lives. Life is constantly changing and we can never allow ourselves to grow comfortable in any one place.

We must all be willing to push ourselves beyond our comfort level. We will never grow until we refuse to be satisfied where we are and continue to strive for more! Life has so much more to offer us so we must look at each situation that arises as an opportunity for growth!

Sometimes things will hit us pretty hard, but we can't allow these circumstances to keep us down. We must pick ourselves back up and look for the new door is being opened for us. There are always lessons to be learned and as we continue on our life's journey, we take what we've previously learned and carry it to each new level and before we know it we will be way beyond where we ever dreamed we would be!

New residential areas evolve

With the increase in wealth because of textile manufacture and other industries coupled with the establishment of a streetcar system, new residential neighborhoods came into being, such as the Hampton-Pinckney neighborhood (pictured), the Pettigru Street neighborhood, the Pendleton Street neighborhood, the James and Earle Streets neighborhood and the Overbrook neighborhood

Construction boom

The mid-20s brought the Poinsett Hotel (“Carolina’s Finest”), the Chamber of Commerce building, South Carolina’s largest furniture store and a theater.

Then, along came textile mill strikes and the Great Depression which affected Greenville just as they did the rest of the country. Construction came to a halt for several years and it was not until World War II and the building of Donaldson Air Force base just south of the City of Greenville that the economy in Greenville improved.

As the suburbs of Greenville showed great increase in both housing and businesses, the heart of the City suffered a great decline.

However, in the mid 1970s, Heritage Green, a cultural complex made up of The Little Theatre, Greenville County Library, the Greenville County Museum of Art and the Greenville Symphony Association, opened in downtown Greenville. Following this event, in 1979, came the building of the Hyatt Regency Hotel.

This downtown revitalization has continued as is exemplified by the creation of the Historic Falls Park on the Reedy. Today downtown Greenvillle draws visitors to its old town charm with a modern twist.

From a Town to a City

In February 1869, Greenville’s Town Charter was amended by the S. C. General Assembly establishing Greenville, the town, as a City.

Again, Greenville began to grow. An African American church, Springfield Baptist, was built, the Southern Railroad began operations through Greenville, a large cotton seed oil mill was built on Augusta Street, a horse drawn street railway began operations and the first real bridge was built for Main Street to cross the Reedy River.

Almost simultaneously, publication began of a daily paper, Greenville Daily News, and a large textile mill, Camperdown, was built on the river in downtown Greenville.

In 1876, Greenville’s first non-protestant church was built - St. Mary’s Catholic Church. 1882 was a memorable year for a second mill, the Huguenot Mill, was built within the City, telephone service was inaugurated, home mail delivery had begun and the City School District was created.

By the 1890, a second City Hall had to be built along with a City Hospital.

In the late 1890s, Greenville hosted a U. S. Army training camp called Camp
Wetherill where soldiers were trained to serve in the Spanish-American War.

With the turn of the century came electric street cars, Southern Bell telephone service, Coca-Cola and American Cigar production, the building of the Ottaray Hotel and a local man, Martin F. Ansel, being elected to serve as Governor of South Carolina.

In the mid teens, with Greenville being known as the “ Textile Center of the South”, an Exposition Hall for the textile industries was built, but WWII was soon in progress and another army camp was built. This time, the army camp called Camp Sevier was outside of the City, but had a great impact on the economy of the City.

FROM A VILLAGE TO A TOWN
In 1831, the Village of Greenville became the Town of Greenville and established a City Government with a Council made up of an Intendant and four Wardens. The Council appointed a Clerk, a High Constable, a Town Surveyor, a Bell Ringer and a Sexton who would care for the Town Cemetery, later to be named Springwood Cemetery. The Council strongly advocated the planting of trees along down town streets. To protect their trees, they voted to fine those citizens who even tied their horses to the trees while on business in down town.

Of the many log and weather boarded houses built in the town before 1850, only a few remain and all are listed on the National Register of Historic Places - Whitehall, also referred to as Governor Middleton’s House; the Fountain Fox Beattie House, known as the Greenville Woman’s Club; the Elias Earle Town House and the Josiah Kilgore House (pictured), which is home to the Greenville Garden Club.

The 1850s were a time of rapid growth in the little town of Greenville and its immediate surrounding area. A new Court House was built and believed to have been designed by the well known Engineer/Architect Robert Mills. Both Furman University and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary came to town.

The first railroad, the Greenville and Columbia Railroad, built its terminal in the West End area. The Greenville Female College was established and grammar schools built. Greenville had a locally owned carriage and wagon manufacturing plant, the largest in the south. Through the generosity of a citizen, Alexander McBee, the City was provided with piped water.

Greenville ’s nearby mountains still provide an abundance of pure water and shield the City from severe weather, such as tornados and large amounts of frozen precipitation.

Then came the 1860s and the Civil War

The City Council had the patrols to become better organized and to be under the direction of Marshals. Men were enlisted into military groups. Women’s groups organized to knit socks and gloves, to prepare bandages and to care for the sick and wounded.

Vardry McBee gave to the State of South Carolina a piece of land on which to build an Armory for the repair and manufacture of rifles, particularly Morse rifles, for the use of the Confederate Army. Morse, himself, moved to Greenville to oversee the rifle making.

At the close of the Civil War, Greenville’s own, Benjamin F. Perry, an attorney, was appointed provisional Governor of South Carolina. Federal troops, commanded by Major John W. DeForest occupied Greenville for the duration of the Reconstruction period.
