Sometimes eating dessert has a higher purpose and power.  (I think it’s calorie free then too!)  When you’re savoring desserts and learning about homeless Salem families its one of those perfect opportunities! Better yet – it’s free and you’re invited!
Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network is hosting their 11th Annual Dessert on Thursday April 29th.  It will be held at the Mission Mill Museum Spinning Room at 7:00 pm.  Sound like a snooze?  Just the opposite!

Your help is needed to make a difference for Salem homeless families
As you drive down Edgewater Street in west Salem, you can easily pass and not notice the day center of Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network (Salem IHN).  It is in an area of older homes converted to business use and apartment buildings.  The unpretentious sign gives only a small clue as to what business this location contains.  Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network is a safe haven to families experiencing homelessness.  The program unites dozens of churches and hundreds of volunteers to serve the goal of self sufficiency for homeless families.

Two years ago I was approached to join the board of a local non-profit homeless organization.  The idea of adding more meetings or responsibilities to my schedule wasn't an enticing one.  I'd volunteered for this homeless charity in the past, occasionally cooking or hosting meals at our church, donating my unwanted household items or outgrown kids clothes to be used by their homeless guests.  Wasn't that enough?  Reading in the newspaper about Salem's plan to end homelessness within 10 years caused me to wonder if that was really an attainable or even worthwhile goal - don't many of the homeless choose … (2 comments)

For nearly ten years Salem Interfaith Hospitality Network has been making a difference in Salem, Oregon by providing emergency shelter for families.  They also help families solve life issues so they can become self sufficient and provide a stable environment for their children.  The Day Center is used by families as their "home base", where they can do things we take for granted such as shower, do laundry, search for work or meet with the case manager.  This "home" is in need of repairs, updating and cleaning.
