long island: Some Long Island History ~ Did You Know . . . - 02/19/09 10:37 AM
That when P.T. Barnum died in 1891 his estate was valued at $4.3 million dollars. Mr. Barnum made his fortune not just from his circus, but from real estate; some of which he purchased in Port Jefferson on Long Island. In 1873 P.T. Barnum bought land in Port Jefferson and, using his nephew and a real estate partner as his agents, cleaned up the site by removing dense areas of trees in the area known as Brick Hill. He planned to "erect a good number of houses there". While the first parcels were advertised in August of 1875, none were

long island: Art For The Sky ~ Coming To Commack, Long Island - 11/07/08 03:02 PM
I found this in our local paper online this morning, in their blog area. I think this is so cool, when you think that from on the ground it just looks like people standing around. I had to share it here, and with my fellow Long Islanders. This is about Commack Middle School students and staff taking the shape of a lighthouse. To the students and staff: Have fun with it guys! I, for one, can't wait to see the finished picture! With Mr. Daniel Dancer's permission, below is one of his Art for the Sky projects. Thank you Mr. Dancer -

long island: Hamptons Helicopters Help - 07/06/08 09:24 AM
You know when Summer starts on Long Island because you start to hear the helicopters overhead on Friday evenings as they come from Manhattan and head to the Hamptons. Then it starts again on Sunday as they all head back to Manhattan. The stragglers will wait and go Monday morning, when you can usually hear them at about 5:00 a.m. The problem is they fly over residential areas and their noise pollution interferes with residents enjoying their own backyards. In April of this year, Senator Schumer announced a plan to help Long Islanders report helicopters flying below (when you can feel

long island: Home Stager Fees Are Tax Deductible - 04/02/08 10:03 AM
I came across this article this morning from The Kansas City Star that says Home Stager fees paid directly by the Homeowner are tax deductible. To summarize, it is considered "advertising fees" and falls under allowable selling expenses. However, while the stager's services are deductible, expenses for repairs, maintenance or permanent redecorating of the house are not. Homeowners should check with their tax professional. Kathy Passarette, and Creative Home Expressions, is based on Long Island, New York, and offers home staging, interior decorating, interior redesign and color consultations. long island: My Own Long Island Ducks - 03/10/08 05:11 PM
No, it's not the baseball team, whose website you can find here. Baseball fans may know that Bud Harrelson helped found the team. These Long Island Ducks are based in Central Islip, New York. It is also not the infamous Big Duck built in 1931 by duck farmer Martin Maurer to be used as a shop to sell ducks and duck eggs, originally in Riverhead. It is now owned by Suffolk County. This Duck building is 18 feet wide, 30 feet long and 20 feet high. No, my very own Long Island ducks are this lovely couple, who, for some reason, have decided that

Every year, throughout the month of March, Suffolk County residents shave their heads in an effort to raise money for the St. Baldrick's Foundation, which was created in 2000 to support research for childhood cancers. They also aid in finding less invasive treatments for those with cancer. Last year, fundraisers in Suffolk County alone raised $500,000.00. Events will be held throughout Suffolk County this year from Napper Tandy's Irish Pub in Northport to Tommy's Place in Rocky Point. The Connetquot School District will be joining in this year as part of the Fox network's "FOX School Challenge" that encourages kids to help

If you live in the Town of Brookhaven and have been wondering why your recycling has not been carted away on Recycle days, you may be one of the 9,000 residents who received the wrong recycling schedule. The recycling schedules are divided up into areas north of Middle Country Road and south of Middle Country Road; somehow each got the others recycling schedules. Over 1,000 replacement schedules have been sent out. As of right now, it is up to the residents to contact the Town and request the correct schedule of trash pick-up days. You can contact the Department of Waste

long island: Free Concerts - 02/06/08 08:02 PM
Tonight I attended a free concert. It was at the Mount Sinai High School, and it was members of the high school's Chorus, Symphonic Band and Jazz Ensemble. Now, I attended because my son is a senior at Mount Sinai High School and plays the tenor saxophone in the Symphonic Band. However, I have long thought that these concerts might be of interest to our 55+ community who just want to hear some good music. It's free, it's local and it's played in a professional manner. Just like the local libraries, you are paying school taxes, so why not enjoy some

long island: Winter Is Here, Keep Fire Hydrants Clear - 01/16/08 08:02 AM
Photo courtesy of Howe/Foster Daily Democrat I saw my title for this post on a sign outside one of our local firehouses - "Winter is here, keep fire hydrants clear". This is really an important message, and I was thinking that most people really don't think about the fire hydrant that is on their property. We all want to clear the driveways and walkways, and get back into the warmth of our homes. Valuable time could be wasted in the event of a fire for the firemen to have to take the time to clear snow from the hydrant. On Long Island, where the majority (if

long island: The Cheesecake Factory at Smith Haven Mall - 01/14/08 07:43 PM
This evening, my son, husband and myself had dinner at the new Cheesecake Factory in Lake Grove located at the Smith Haven Mall. The new Barnes & Noble (which as of this post is not open just yet) is right next door, which will make for some great browsing if you have a wait to be seated. I had been to the one in Westbury (once) and thought that their cheesecake was soooo good at the time. The menu has something for everyone, even weight management selections. This evening I had the Cuban Sandwich, which was really delicious. Hubby had the Tons

The rest of the article is here if you care to read it. In the picture section, my pictures are #4 & 5. Before and after, with expert tips:The problem with bedrooms is that they usually wind being a catch-all for everything at the end of the day, says Kathy Passarette of Creative Home Expressions in New York. The Heritage Center is located within the property of the North Shore Heritage Park in Mount Sinai, also known as "the wedge". The park is bordered by Route 25A, Mount Sinai-Coram Road, and County Road 83. This community center has become a focal point of the park. The Heritage Center is a 3,400-square-foot structure designed to resemble a barn, which is fitting given all the farmland that was in this area. It has a large meeting room, lobby area, a small kitchen area, indoor bathrooms and bathrooms that are accessible from the outside, if you are patronizing the park. One

long island: The Planets Are Aligned On Long Island - 01/01/08 05:18 PM
The Vanderbilt Planetarium is located on the grounds of the Vanderbilt Museum. The planetarium opened in 1971 and is the largest facility of its kind on Long Island. The Vanderbilt Museum is located at 180 Little Neck Road, Centerport, New York. The website http://www.vanderbiltmuseum.org/home.php?section=planetarium lists hours, directions and admission charges, as well as special events, workshops and information about the museum. I remember taking my children to the planetarium when they were on school break, and it made a great winter activity for us. All kids like to look at the stars and the planetarium show does not disappoint. In fact, I

long island: New Year's Resolutions ~ For Your Home - 12/21/07 09:31 AM
Google Public Domain Images January - Remove your holiday decorations by the second week in January. Nobody wants to see icicle lights or reindeer on your lawn in February, whether they be your neighbors or prospective buyers. February - Apply a fresh coat of paint to any rooms that need it. This is one of the least expensive ways to add a change to the inside of your home. March - While Spring cleaning, move some things around from collectibles to furniture to give you a fresh perspective and appreciation of your belongings. April - Wash all your windows. Seems so simple but a lot
