long island decorator: Wallpaper Or Art ~ It Can Be Both - 05/18/09 10:39 AM
There are some beautiful wallpapers out there and while I love them, I just can't bring myself to wallpaper an entire room. However, I can still enjoy the lovely patterns that are out there by using the wallpaper in other ways. Photos courtesy of All Posters and Real SimpleFraming pieces of wallpaper and using them in lieu of actual pictures. Not only am I getting some of that beauty I'm admiring, but an inexpensive way to add some art to my walls! You can do individual pieces or hang three together in a tryptich. long island decorator: It's Time To Come Home ~ Finale - 03/16/09 10:15 AM
My "It's Time To Come Home" series has come to an end.  We've talked about Color, Paint, Flooring, Lighting, Window Treatments and Accessories.  There are links to each post at the bottom.  This final segment is really about the most important part of your home - YOU!

We can add color, paint, window treatments and accessories, but your home is not your home without you, your family, friends and other loved ones enjoying it.  Sharing how your day went with your family in your "just-right-shade-of-red" dining room; kicking back and playing a board game while sitting on the "this-carpet-feels-so-good" floor; getting ready … (9 comments)

long island decorator: It's Time To Come Home ~ Color - 01/18/09 07:45 PM

Now that we've discussed the applications available for your walls, let's look at colors - not only for use in those applications, but also in the other accessories you may bring into a room.  It is not unusual to ask a client what colors they feel good wearing, because you can translate those same colors used in clothing lines into the home.  Color is an emotional choice and chances are if you are happy wearing certain colors, or think you look good in certain colors, you will surround yourself with those colors in your home.  Also look to accessories like … (13 comments)

long island decorator: It's Time To Come Home ~ Walls - 01/16/09 10:10 AM
Walls - they are what enclose your home from the outside world and separate rooms within your home.  The dictionary defines walls as "a vertical structure forming an inside partition or an outside surface of a building."  For the purposes of this article, we will be discussing the interior walls of your home.
This part of the series will be broken down into Paint, Wallpaper, Faux Techniques and Other Options.  I hope you will visit some of the websites listed to get more of an in-depth idea of these different treatments.

long island decorator: It's Time To Come Home ~ Series Introduction - 01/15/09 01:22 PM

Whenever something happens in the world that affects us, the one place we can truly feel relaxed and comfortable is in our homes.  As 1930's former film star and interior decorator William Haines said, "The only real freedom we have is our home.  Only there can we express anything we want."
This year I plan on writing a series that will assist you in making your home the welcoming sanctuary you can retreat to at the end of the day.   The basic foundation of the series is the message that "It's Time To Come … (13 comments)

long island decorator: So, You Wanna Get A Horse? - 12/10/08 08:55 PM
I don't ride, but I have always appreciated the beauty of horses.  Five beautiful horses rescued from a stable in September, are healthy once again thanks to the SPCA.  The horses were taken to Indian Head Ranch in Huntington, and have been under the care of the owner, Wayne Dougal.  The emaciated horses have regained much of their weight.
Four of the five horses are up for adoption, the fifth having been adopted by one of the veterinarians that treated him.  Applications are due by next Wednesday and the adoption fee is $1,200.00.  You can view additional pictures of these beautiful … (11 comments)

long island decorator: Let's Go Shopping ~ Holiday Decor - 12/05/08 09:37 PM
3 Price Points, 5 Items, Unlimited Possibilities
It was reported in the news in the weeks leading up to Halloween that more pumpkins were purchased this year than in previous years.  In this currently chaotic world of financial insecurity and uncertainty, our families, friends, traditions and holidays give us something known and solid to hold onto.  The familiarity of our holiday traditions and those we celebrate them with are secure footholds in these sometimes trying times.
For those that want to purchase holiday items for the first time, (such as the newlyweds in the family) to those that  just need to … (25 comments)

long island decorator: Art For The Sky ~ Coming To Commack, Long Island - 11/07/08 03:02 PM
I found this in our local paper online this morning, in their blog area.  I think this is so cool, when you think that from on the ground it just looks like people standing around.  I had to share it here, and with my fellow Long Islanders.  This is about Commack Middle School students and staff taking the shape of a lighthouse.
To the students and staff: Have fun with it guys!  I, for one, can't wait to see the finished picture!
With Mr. Daniel Dancer's permission, below is one of his Art for the Sky projects.  Thank you Mr. Dancer - … (10 comments)

long island decorator: Halloween On Long Island ~ Pumpkin Picking - 10/23/08 09:42 AM
Sales are up this year on pumpkins!  Could it be that family traditions and holidays are our sanctuary from what is going on in the world right now?

Here in Suffolk County, there is no shortage of places to pick pumpkins and it makes for a fun family day, whether you just bring them home and put them on the front porch, or carve them up for Halloween.  There is nothing that brings a smile to your face quicker than seeing a small child try to pick a pumpkin twice their size!

long island decorator: Freshen Up Your Home This Fall - 09/07/08 08:16 PM
Gas at $4.00 a gallon, food prices rising, pillows costing $7.00 on airlines, is it any wonder that "staycations" and "cocooning" have become buzz words recently.  With our current economy, more and more people are choosing to stay at home and making do with what they've got. Decorating your home is more important than ever now.  With Fall just around the corner, our thoughts turn back to sprucing up the inside of our homes.
While you may not feel you need a full interior decorating job, many decorators can work with you on an hourly basis for such things as: window … (9 comments)

long island decorator: Tooting My Own Horn - Featured on AvaLiving.com - 07/20/08 08:03 AM
I received an e-mail Friday evening letting me know that a website I joined a few months ago was going to have me as one of their "Featured Designers" for the week of July 20th, with my condo model living room.  I am one of 5 or 6 on the home page.  You can visit it at AvaLiving.com.  Ava Living has a directory of interior designers/decorators from all over the world.  It is a great free site for listing your business, blogging, joining groups and adding some of your portfolio pictures.  I utilize it mainly as a directory listing, and when I … (41 comments)

long island decorator: Hamptons Helicopters Help - 07/06/08 09:24 AM
You know when Summer starts on Long Island because you start to hear the helicopters overhead on Friday evenings as they come from Manhattan and head to the Hamptons.  Then it starts again on Sunday as they all head back to Manhattan.  The stragglers will wait and go Monday morning, when you can usually hear them at about 5:00 a.m.  The problem is they fly over residential areas and their noise pollution interferes with residents enjoying their own backyards.
In April of this year, Senator Schumer announced a plan to help Long Islanders report helicopters flying below (when you can feel … (16 comments)

long island decorator: Bringing The Indoors Out ~ Part 2 - 04/23/08 04:45 PM
It is important to include layers of height to your outdoor room.  Except for the patio umbrella, everything tends to be the same height, giving a "flat" feel to the décor.  Don't be afraid to use unconventional items to achieve this.  I have an inexpensive metal baker's rack that I use outside.  It helps lift plants up to eye level, as well as candles and any outdoor accessories that I want to highlight.

If you plan on using your outdoor room quite frequently at night, use white plants and flowers, and touches of white … (33 comments)
