seo: Robots.txt Why do You Need One? - 02/13/09 03:42 PM
Okay here it is my FREE SEO tip exclusively for the AR folks. Do you know what a robots.txt file is? Does your website have one? What should you use it for?
These are all too important, and often overlooked questions. Your website (not your AR blog) should have a robots.txt file. Why? Well EVERY search engine that visits your site will look for a sitemap and a robots.txt file IMMEDIATELY upon arrival.
They look at the sitemap to discover all of the pages on your site, and they look at the robots file to see what pages they are supposed … (6 comments)

seo: Emerald Isle Snow and SEO - 01/20/09 12:45 PM
Yes it's hard to believe, but the snow is coming down like crazy right now. The weatherman said earlier today it would stop by 6pm. But it's 8:30pm now and it's snowing and blowing like crazy right here in Emerald Isle. When I was coming home from work tonight it was kind of fun driving in the snow. Since moving here about 5 years ago I think its only snowed one real good time for me. I grew up in the snow and used to love it, I even loved driving in it. These days I really could do without it, … (2 comments)

seo: Keep it Fresh - 01/15/09 01:59 PM
Why do I love blogs? Why do search engines love blogs? Most importantly why do site visitors love blogs?
Well mainly because there is usually a good amount of fresh content on a blog. I love visiting sites and blogs with fresh content. It's what keeps me coming back. Think about AR. Have you ever meant to login and do something real quick only to find yourself not accomplishing the task you came here for an hour later? I bet so, that's because there are so many NEW and thought provoking blog entries. Fresh content rules.
Well not just fresh content, … (6 comments)

seo: Local News Your Best Friend - 01/06/09 02:28 PM
Well as you may or may not know I released my new rentals by owner site over the weekend. Saturday to be exact. And I did link to it from my profile here on AR and did a free press release in a Raleigh area newspaper's blog forum thing. But that was about it aside from some linking to it from my other sites. Plus my site was already ranking number 10 for some key terms.
Long story shorter, I was expecting maybe a few emails expressing interest etc. However, the last thing I expected was a phone call Sunday from News14 … (4 comments)

seo: You Tube and SEO - 12/27/08 11:19 PM
Many of my SEO clients look at me like I'm crazy when I suggest they enter the You Tube arena for SEO purposes. However, when you're targeting a very competitive set of keywords, any little bit can help. Here's how.
If you don't have a YouTube account go get one. Then since most of you are real estate agents, go make videos of real estate for sale in your area. Post them to You Tube using the proper keywords or tags, whatever YouTube calls them. Then just hang tight. It may take a few months, but more likely than not, your … (25 comments)

seo: Picking the Right Keywords - 12/20/08 08:34 AM
I am always blown away by the number of sites I see, owned by local, legitimate businesses, in dire need of just a little SEO work on their sites. Once again I am here showing another Crystal Coast business how to improve search rankings and increase traffic. I am a fisherman when Im not blogging, fixing computers, or writing database queries. Well when I first moved to Carteret County I didn't know where to find a good tackle shop, or find out more information on fishing local waters. So naturally where I did start looking? On Google of course!
Much to my … (5 comments)

seo: What is SEO? - 12/16/08 12:42 PM
Just the other day, I had a fellow contact me from Richmond and asked that question I think some RE agents are afraid to ask. What is SEO? Well SEO is a lot of things. It's about optimizing your on-page content, providing valuable and unique content, and creating a portfolio of QUALITY back links. I cannot stress the QUALITY part enough. Don't believe me? Go to some junk site and buy yourself like 10,000 links to your site. I'm ninety percent sure you will see traffic go down, along with your search engine rankings.
Okay, so how do I optimize my … (2 comments)

seo: Keywords in Your Domain Name - 12/15/08 09:39 AM
I'll start off by saying that whenever you purchase a new domain name, it will help you to have some or all of your desired keywords in the domain name, that should be pretty obvious. Preferably with no hyphens, but if you need one or two hyphens that's no biggie. More than two dashes and your domain name looks spammy to me. Okay so lets say that your targeting "keyword real estate".
Well then the obvious domain name choice should be keywordrealestate.com or keywordrealestate.net. However, most likely those two domain names are taken and you'll have to start looking for keyword-realestate.com, keyword-realestate.net, or … (8 comments)
