A tribute to our beloved horses - observations at the WEG - 10/12/10 03:39 PM
The whole time I was at the World Equestrian Games I kept thinking how wonderfully generous horses really are; allowing us to take them over crazy large solid jumps in cross-country eventing, around huge show jumping Grand Prix courses with impressive heights and spreads multiple times in one week, spinning and giving all they got in the sliding stops in reining, spiraling through wooden mazes teamed with 3 other horses pulling a carriage sometimes at a gallop during the driving marathon.  Then there is vaulting where a team of vaulters are gracefully doing gymnastics upon their backs while they steadily and … (0 comments)

Farewell to the WEG 2010 - 10/12/10 03:00 PM
On Monday, October 11th  in the wee hours of the morning I headed to the Blue Grass airport in Lexington to go back home.  As happy as I was to return to see my daughter and husband, it was a bit sad that this much anticipated, international large scale event had finally come to a close.  Spending 16 days there assisting the organizing committee, observing many of the competitions and meeting horse people from the world over became a way of life.  Living in Switzerland for almost 4 years developed my passion for international scenes, so to speak.   I had met … (0 comments)

The Marvelous Marathon (WEG 2010) - 10/10/10 11:46 AM
It was a scorching day on Saturday for the driving marathon (in the mid 80s) but it went without a hitch.  Only a few minor mishaps occurred, the usual leg over a tracer here and there.  I got to try my hand at timing at obstacle 8.  There were about 13 of us helping out at this one obstacle not including the vet and medical staff. Was impressed with all the man power it takes to run a driving marathon.  It was a good day for the USA finishing the marathon in 2nd place as a team.  Let's hope our luck … (0 comments)

The Final Four - WEG 2010 - 10/10/10 11:43 AM
It was nice to see a developing country in horse sport, the Kingdom of Saudia Arabia, take the silver medal on Saturday night at the Final 4 jumping competition.  This is where the Top 4 individual finishers ride each other’s horses in a total of 4 rotations.  They each have 3 minutes to ride the other horses to try to figure them out before taking on the course. Belgium’s Philippe Le Jeune won the competition with all clear rounds. Canadian rider, Eric Lamaze was bronze medal winner. (where were the Germans?).  This was the most packed I have seen the main … (1 comments)

WEG 2010 - more than just horse sport - 10/08/10 08:44 AM
For those of us who appreciate artistic riding displays, there are shows with baroque horses that are fun to watch in the Equine Village; far away from the sporting venues but worth the walk.

Driving at the WEG 2010 - 10/08/10 08:42 AM

Traipsing across the entire show grounds yesterday, I made my way up to the driving stadium to take in some driving dressage just in time to see Chester Weber’s test.  Ahh, he makes it look so easy making circles with only one hand holding on to the reins.  The “grooms” (I am sure there is another term?) who sit in the back of the carriage seemed to be judged on how still they can sit, the more board-like the higher the score!

Cross Country Day at the WEG 2010 - 10/03/10 12:23 PM
The weather on cross country day was nearly perfect. The crowd on the course was on par with what CCI4* Rolex usually enjoys but there were a lot more people on the paved paths.  The water jumps were quite spectacular and I witnessed well ridden rides over them thankfully!  I had the pleasure of  watching some of the jumps with PA based and past bronze eventing medalist Kim Walnes. It's always nice to hear the comments from someone in the know.   After wards I worked my way to the stadium to watch the remaining riders on the big screen.  GO USA!!

WEG 2010 & the Phenomenal Fuego - 10/03/10 12:18 PM
On Sept 24th, a very hot and windy day, I arrived in KY to be part of the World Equestrian Games 2010. This is the first time this huge equestrian event is taking place in North America.  I have been helping out at the Show office which is in the center of the venue. It is where the Chefs de Missions and Chefs d’Equipes congregate to make their declarations, hand in Hippa forms, get meal vouchers, collect their team members awards and stall plaques. It also trouble shoots transportation, stabling and passport inquiries and anything in between.  Here I have been … (2 comments)
